Miisha is gone again :(

Edit 2: @[email protected] now!

Edit 3: not again...

Edit 4: oh no, now @[email protected] has been wiped

I'm sorry... I think it's me who triggered this by worrying about her so much (I won't why but it's not life-threatening) I messaged her on Lemmy (she's not online on Matrix), making her open a chat which we last used...

::: spoiler CW: self-harm
...when she had suicidal thoughts and as the police suggested I pretended to want to come so I could make them do a wellness check... ultimately did make her less willing to die but not nice of me

At least nobody (not even the police, who didn't ask for her username) but me (who she accidentally sent her name to) knows her real name in connection with the Lemmy and Matrix accounts, so she technically wasn't doxxed; the police didn't tell me the address they found in their database of course.

By the way, the police here is generally nice, if incompetent at times, and would use Miisha's legal (female) name. It's not like I sent a SWAT team.
:::

Edit: Miisha insists this was not why she deleted her account. It's clear she was already in distress* so I'd say I wasn't the only factor but given the timing, it was probably the last straw

* Edit: this is the situation in question

So yeah, @[email protected] saw a sad chat, didn't want to see it ever again and went the way of @[email protected] :( at least her posts and comments are still visible

Linux conference ("date") with Miisha: *too* successful?

To be clear: I'm not discussing anything about her she has not published already.

As you may already know, my "date" with @[email protected] went well. See her post. However, a new problem has emerged: as she publicly said, she fell in love with me. And while I'm flattered I told her before, during and after the conference that I'm not ready for a relationship, in more ways than one: for example, there's nowhere we could live together, and I'm nothing like her BF sexually. How do I convince her my treatment of her is nothing special, at least by Prague standards? I did my best to make her interact with other people at the conference (in a mutually respectable and enjoyable way... well, I was bordering on being a chaser but I think I was successful at making nobody uncomfortable) but mostly remained by her side as a kind of bodyguard (no intervention was necessary, thankfully) plus gave her affirming words as needed. Really, a good portion of straight dudes can give her this kind of treatment (and much of it came down to it being at a Prague technical university, likely the safest place she's been to) but her willingness to look for other people to love actually fell after seeing me. And there is evidence good allies exist near where she lives, and before the conference she did wish she knew some...

Why this is concerning

::: spoiler sad, trans person treated badly, mental issues
See her post from yesterday - with separate CWs. Basically, she no longer feels safe at home and her BF's treatment is unstable at best... she's now at his place again but does not feel great there. The best solution would be her finding someone else to live with or maybe a psychiatric hospital (uncomfortable but would help her stabilize emotions). She did get some contacts at the conference but nobody nearby AFAIK, and I can't convince her she'd be better off finding someone now than holding out the status quo before I get my life together, for example finishing my studies and getting a job and a place to live separately from parents. If they turn out to stay together for years (I know she can sustain a relationship), I'll be happy for her and will not try to disrupt them. My cousin, also a straight cis dude, recently suffered a breakup but he has an income and quickly found a new place to live. He's not bigoted but Miisha is not his type, sadly.

Oh no, Techmoan uses AI... badly

From Techmoan's video The man with the magic EQ at 19:37 (YouTube)

Techmoan just employed AI to find which of the many 78-RPM record EQ standards his equalizer uses in its "78" mode. He made recordings in RIAA and 78 modes, named them accordingly (shouldn't have to avoid bias), and uploaded them into a chatbot... Does he think the chatbot actually ran code on the server that

  • calculated the frequency spectrum (FFT) of each track,
  • divided 78/RIAA at each data point (or subtracted on log scale) to get relative values,
  • normalized to the well-known RIAA curve,
  • plotted the curve and identified roll-off frequencies and slopes?

I'm not saying this is impossible with AI, I'm sure a token-burning, recursively-prompting LLM (aka "agent") could write a Python script that runs on the local PC and actually does this. But no company would offer people to prompt agents on their servers for free like that. Pretty sure the bot just made up values to plot with Matplotlib or something. The first chart has a big red flag: the noise makes the curve go beyond the Y-axis maximum, suggesting the clean version existed first and the chart was "cropped" to that, then the noise was added. The second two charts imply that the bottom one is the derivative of the top, which it obviously isn't (if you know calculus). And RIAA EQ being +12 dB to +14 dB louder than the "78" preset across most of the audible spectrum? There's barely any volume difference when he toggles the switch in the video!

And there's no 500Hz bass roll-off the AI was so adamant about! see edit below

Edit: here are annotated pictures:

Edit: the lack of 500Hz roll-off in these charts (if they are to be believed) means the "78" and "RIAA" characteristics are the same around 500 Hz, which is to be expected for Brunswick, since it uses the same 500Hz roll-off as RIAA. I just forgot that the AI didn't do the important Step 3 in my outlined procedure to get the "78" response curve. Still, the derivative is either smoothed beyond usability or plain wrong. Plus, Techmoan misrepresented the result (see second set of subtitles). If we take "Measured relative EQ curve" at face value like he did, Brunswick and RIAA are virtually identical in bass with their 500Hz roll-off (see the chart, it's near-flat below 1500 Hz). The difference is in the upper frequencies.

Also, is that actually ChatGPT's interface? Never used it but the "citation" sure looks like from Google's AI overview.

TIL Slovakia used to have a peculirule TV channel

Source

This comes from a 1986 holiday special of the very good Czechoslovak Arabella fantasy TV series, but unlike the (arguably better) Star Wars one, not enough angry people called the TV station so it's been rebroadcast since on the short-lived Slovak ":3" channel. A German Arabella fan uploaded it to YouTube taking great effort to make German subtitles, way more than the shit content deserves.

This scene is part of a four-season-themed ice skating revue. I chose it because it has the most furries in the entire film, to match the TV logo. And yes, the animals with crude suits appear several other times in the film, here's a close-up of the fox as air attendant

Translation:

(Slovak intro)

(Before start of clip) The Snow Queen can freeze almost anything with her wind, her icy touch.
Except one thing.
The love in the hearts of people who love each other.
Which is why Christmas is a holiday of love.

Does it take just 1 subscriber to get a community "trending"?!

I just saw ![email protected] as #6 in Communities/All (sorted by Hot) (web archive) on feddit.org. This feels weird because the feddit.de server has been down for almost 2 years and the community seems to have no content (the home server cannot be contacted to verify but no posts seem to have been federated to other popular instances like feddit.org) and obviously never will have. As for the subscriber count, feddit.org keeps its own tally, which is currently (archive) at 64. This does not include new subscribers after the last federation with feddit.de, except local ones. These can also be checked separately, and the number is... one. This suggests that only one person ever subscribed to ![email protected] in the past 1.5 years (as far as feddit.org, a 1k-weekly-active-user instance, is concerned), and yet the community is very high in Hot for a day.

Obviously, the visibility of the Communities/All (by Hot) list varies by client, for example Voyager shows it unsolicited as "Trending communities" in the Search pane, and even though Lemmy devs didn't include it prominently in default Lemmy UI, they definitely have considered the value of this list in mind since it's made the shortlist in Lemmy's API benchmarks.

Young wood pigeon (or less likely stock dove) I saw

It's probably okay, it can walk and fly.

I tried giving it some bread but it wasn't paying any attention to it. I shoved it closer, which scared the poor guy and it flew on a first floor windowsill across the street. That's probably for the best, it could easily fall victim to a dog otherwise. I threw the bread up there but it seemed tired from the flight and sat in the shade. Most of the bread was gone the next day, and so was the pigeon.

I was really surprised by how long the young ones' beaks are, I first thought it could be a corvid.

TIL German also has "eggcorns"

Eggcorns (Wikipedia / YouTube video by RobWords) are language mistakes that sometimes take over and change the spelling and perhaps even the meaning of a word. This is rare in German because there's fewer homophones but in this episode of Wort der Woche, DW explains how "munttot" became "mundtot". Available as audio or transcript.

I know some of you set the clock forward a bit to put your children in bed early on New Year's Eve. But whoever controls the departure boards in Prague Main Station: please don't do that!

Yup, this is real, recorded 15 minutes before the new year.

Also see our top-of-the-2010s Christmas song Půlnoční, whose music video features the building on midnight of New Year's. Since I was there shortly before that time, I told all people willing to listen.

Google should have called it JIF, not WebP

WebP does everything GIF did, just better. The only problem is adoption. Maybe a similar, single-syllable name could have helped.

  • Ends the pronunciation debate: hard G in the 1987 filetype, soft G in the 2010 one
  • Looping soundless video gets a name that's short and does not refer to a terribly inefficient format (that "gif" sharing sites often no longer use anyway), plus some wrong people have been using it already
  • Software peer-pressured into supporting it (nobody wants to hear "they don't support JIF" about their software)

Yes, Prague is inexplicably car-brained for how dense the public transport network is.

Phil Mason, aka Thunderf00t, is a US expat at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and most of his last 80 videos are about criticizing Musk. I wonder if he ever encounters a Cybertruck (there have been multiple for quite a while) and films it up close, it would help if he stopped reusing footage so much.
