hexbear.net is on sale for auction

This almost certainly won't kill the Hexbear community, and frankly I don't think there's any way they will choose to pony up the auction money. This community has moved from reddit to discord to the fediverse and they'll probably just be on their backup/original domain chapo.chat for a month or two before switching over to whatever the admins decide to switch to, and then it will be business as usual under a new name.

Still there's a lesson here about setting up a durable online community - don't let someone control the domain registration with their personal account, you're just asking for something like this to happen. If they don't have one already the admins should set up some kind of organization that can "own" the new domain, donations, etc so that this can't happen again.

They're not doing it on purpose. The people currently making these decisions do not understand the government, what it does, why it is powerful, where the money comes from, etc. It's like someone stripping the copper wiring out of their own house.

The first wave of Cuban immigrants to the US came immediately after the revolution, and it was mostly rich people. Castro was redistributing the land and the wealth, executing former police torturers, and going after crime lords who had been safe under the Batista regime, and every worm that could escape did so. These types were allowed into the US for their propaganda value because of course they wouldn't have any trouble going on TV and talking about how horrible communism was and crying about how their plantations were taken away from them by the government. That group of rich people and cops was already right wing by American standards when they came here, and set the tone for all Cuban migrants who came after.

I think people got mad at something she said about Avatar on twitter (the cartoon not the movie), and her anti-fandom reached a critical mass spreading around every single thing she'd ever said that could be interpreted uncharitably, and with her book out and her presence on Nebula secured she decided that being on YouTube was more trouble than its worth.

The marketing stunt came to a halt after just one day when the security guard noticed the metal frame of the glass case had been weakened from the constant barrage of physical pressure.

Why not just let people keep going until someone breaks the frame? Still makes for a good marketing blurb - "the iron broke before the glass did!"
