You asked why open source would matter. In this case it would matter because it is visible if the app is abusing an algorithm to keep you on the app rather than actually try to find a match you might like.

So for one, it's much less likely to be happening because anybody with the know-how can see it and tell people. If an app got a bit larger of a userbase and then tried to change it to be shitty, you'll know and can stop using it.

It's also less likely because typically these open source apps the person is developing for free (maybe with donations to help support it) so there isn't that incentive to do anything scummy.

Anyone else can fork the application and host it themselves, so if the original developer starts making changes you disagree with you and a few other contributors could come together and take them out (like CoMaps for an example).

You could try sharing your list of issues, there's a good chance a lot of your issues are fixable, because unlike on iOS you can make your own decisions on Android. Even on Samsungs, they have the good lock app they made which you can use to customize many things they didn't expose by default. I've customized how many apps fit on a screen, how far the volume changes per button press, I customized the keyboard when I was using Samsung's keyboard..

Oh that's right, you can change the keyboard app if you don't like the one you're using. You can change basically anything on Android if you don't like it.

Valve is probably responsible for me moving to Linux fully because of proton and how steam works on Linux. While I would be bitching nonstop about Microsoft, I don't know if getting off windows would be worth it to me if it was a hassle to play games.

I'm not going totally "Amish", but I've become a cranky bitch about technology nowadays. I was very passionate about tech throughout my teens and early twenties. Since then, I've watched every major tech company go to shit. Services I used forever go to shit or die. Companies harvest more and more of our data in creepier and more invasive ways. They went from "don't be evil" and creating interesting new tech or shaking up an industry (Google fiber, for instance) to doing anything as long as it saves a dollar.

The only thing giving me any hope or interest in this space is FOSS and hosting things myself. It was confusing to me at first and still is in some ways, but not only can I solve my own issues, I can offer a lot of it to my friends and family. Having 10 different streaming services and finding where a show is within them is expensive and annoying, but I'm enjoying managing a library and hosting it on jellyfin. Then I can tell a few people, hey get jellyfin and type in this url, I'll find whatever you want. I recently setup seerr so now they don't have to feel like they're bothering me when they want something, they can just request it (and see what's new, upcoming, where something already is streaming if they already have that service, ratings, etc). Yeah it doesn't support the show or movie but it's a much more enjoyable experience. I stopped paying for Google drive and have all my pictures and videos (which is what used up all that space) syncing right to my PC, which then backs up to jotta cloud (not foss). I got off windows entirely (except at work) and use Linux now. I'm probably going to setup nextcloud and get a few people on there soon, since i have the space and it'll save them a subscription.

Yes, but, it's a responsibility spread across the entire population. If you've ever been apart of a group project in a school setting you're likely familiar with how people can fuck that up despite your best efforts. Yes you're also responsible, but you (imo) also get to bitch about how they fucked up your project.

Absolutely. Valve took Linux seriously and it's helped Linux gaming immensely. But you can argue a few things - Valve are private and can still do what they want without an obligation to shareholders. Linux gives them better control of the software on their own devices, so they can tailor the experience exactly how they want. Investing in proton made it so people are willing to buy and use these devices, as the game library becomes nearly identical to windows.

A company like EA, a monolith at this point and historically one of the most profit driven, greedy, arguably scummy companies in gaming, if they're investing in Linux support that means they see dollars and other companies will follow suit. They're specifically looking at their anti cheat software according to this picture which would bring in their competitive shooters, the type of game that is largely missing on Linux.

If their anti cheat supports Linux, others like Easy anti cheat may push to support Linux, and developers like facepunch have even less of a leg to stand on when it comes to ignoring Linux. Unless EA does something like "You must be using our new EA Linux distro for our anti cheat to work" I can't see this being a bad thing.

Hell, I don't even buy anything on Google play anymore since it's so shit, i have no purchases tying me to the OS.
