Why would she tweet that?! We're so effed...

My thoughts exactly. 4 years of a democratic president (and Joe Manchin + Kyrsten Sinema being sticks in the mud) got the blue line to where it is now. That doesn’t mean it stays there forever. Another 4 years of a democratic executive and legislative branch will get us much closer to that yellow line.

We have to keep pushing forward and prevent the country from doing significant environmental backsliding like it did in 2016-2020.

It's beautiful

A week or so ago I had just finished a tough workout at my big box gym and was heading back to my car around sunrise. I looked up and saw the most beautiful and massive pink and purple ripples stretched out from the edge of the horizon to where I was standing. It was so impressive that I had to stop a moment in the middle of the parking lot and soak it in. Then, within 2 minutes, the clouds had shifted and everything returned to a depressing gray.

Beauty like this is everywhere, but it sure can be fleeting.

Ballots set on fire in three states as Election Day approaches

Aggregating some information in this comment based on what I’ve read throughout the internet.

  1. Authorities have identified the vehicle of the one in Oregon (and likely Washington) and probably know who’s behind it at this point. AP News
  2. Authorities have arrested the person responsible for the ballot fires in Phoenix ABC Phoenix
  3. There was a conversation on Truth Social from a user named Elwoodblues50 that suggested doing just this. I have no idea how coordinated it was, but it definitely sounds like something that has been going around right wing circles for a bit. sorry Reddit link
  4. These ballot boxes have measures to protect the ballots in the case of fire. One of the ballot boxes had up to 100 ballots destroyed, the others were in the single digits.
  5. Oregon and Washington both have websites that allow you to check the status of your ballot. If you know anyone in who may have been impacted by this, have them check the websites and request a new ballot if theirs wasn’t accepted. Oregon. Washington

Cost by Protein Source

I like this scatter plot. If you really want to get freaky with it, you should take into account the “protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores.” Things like eggs and whey are 100%, beans are usually in the high 70’s, and peanuts are actually down at near 50%.

So for nutrition’s sake, not all protein sources are created equal, and it makes sense that if you are trying to get adequate protein at the lowest price, you also want to get sources where you can eat the least of it to satisfy the protein requirements of your body.

Former Obama adviser: Kushner engaged in ‘level of corruption that we’ve just never seen’ with foreign relations

The guys at Pod Save America/The World seem to each have their own individual that gets under their skin more than most. Pieffer has/had Paul Ryan, Lovett has Rubio, and Rhodes has Kushner.

Whenever his name is brought up on those pods, it’s a 50/50 shot whether Rhodes or Vietor go on a 5 minute rant roasting Kushner and just how slimy he’s been.

A cool guide on Be careful

This was created by a bot, who got it from a Reddit post that was also created by a bot. So I don’t really know who I’m trying to respond to here…

But people, have some self reflection here. If anyone is so paranoid about toxicity that they feel the need to make a guide like this, then the toxic one may be them.

People are people. Everyone probably displays hints of these traits at times depending on how their day was, or something that’s been hiding beneath the surface. But it’s more nuanced and I can’t say I’ve ever met a single (consequential) person in my life that I would define by any of these categories.

Trump faces a P.R. disaster

Reply in thread

While I 100% agree, his own surrogates like Peter Navarro are trying to distance themselves from Tony’s set. This means that Trumps team at least thinks this is a problem.

Additionally, I don’t think there exists a realistic single event that will cause Trump supporters to leave in droves, but there are hundreds of thousands of Americans with Puerto Rican heritage between Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Maybe this encourages 10% of them to go vote if they were originally planning to sit this one out. 50k more votes for Harris would likely make the difference.

Guess the Episode [Hard]

The Rand corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people, under the supervision of the reverse vampires, are forcing our parents to go to bed early in the fiendish plot to eliminate the meal of dinner!

As Democrats court Haley supporters, the former UN ambassador is still waiting to hear from Trump

Even though her voters can help elect Harris, I’m so sick of Nikki Haley and her spinelessness.

She spent her entire primary campaign saying that Trump is unfit to be president, then once she was eliminated, she immediately said she’d vote for him (probably to try and get a cabinet position). Now that it’s clear he hates her and she has no shot at joining his administration, her current position is an illogical word salad that’s a result of her taking both sides and being backed into a corner.

A Pulitzer-winning deep dive into the Supreme Court scandal (Pt 3): Clarence Thomas Had a Child in Private School. Harlan Crow Paid the Tuition.

These ProPublica reports need to be shared almost as much as project 2025. It’s horrible blatant corruption that needs a light shone on it. And the message is clear, another 4 years of Donald Trump could land us up to 3 more justices just like this. We’d be digging a hole we’d be stuck in for the next 40 years.

This also begs the question of what do we do about Thomas? Unfortunately with a republican majority in congress, they’d have to see him as so toxic to their election that they’d have to make the choice to remove him (less than 0% chance). That leaves us with only one option: vote vote vote! This isn’t just a Trump Biden election. This is for the ability to hold people accountable using congress and the senate too.

And let’s say we see a blue wave and we have enough to begin impeachment process against Thomas and/or Alito. Our job isn’t done then either. We need to raise hell with our representatives in government to make sure they know that it’s unacceptable to have such blatant corruption in our courts and that holding them accountable should be one of the highest priorities. That’s the only way (within our system) to start making change happen. It’s slow and frustrating at times, and it requires a constant commitment, but it still is possible when our reps feel enough pressure.

How am I supposed to decide who to vote for in local elections?

I applaud OP for making an effort to get involved locally but can sympathize with their struggles. Local government elections typically have a more new candidates that don’t have a track record of experience to go back on. Additionally, there are a handful of boilerplate campaign promises that you’ll see over and over again (smart spending, lower taxes, etc). I’ve personally found some success with the following approaches:

  1. Even if you don’t get a ton of info from the candidate themselves, it’s still worth it looking at their website and seeing what they choose to make the centerpiece of their campaign.

  2. Look up your local Democratic and Republican Party websites and see who they endorse. Often, even if a candidate is unaffiliated, the local political parties will have some insight as to who THEY would prefer. That tells you something too.

  3. Try to attend local government events. You’ll learn a TON by attending a city council or school board meeting. In my local area, I’ve seen representatives half asleep or reading newspapers during discussions. At the very least, look at who takes the position seriously. Additionally, try to see who is asking smart questions, and conveys that they understand the subject matters well.

I think we should be encouraging more people for get involved locally. That’s how grassroots efforts turn into more options nationally.

Denied by AI: How Medicare Advantage plans use algorithms to cut off care for seniors in need

This is one of the most annoying (dangerous in this case) trends of the AI rush. It has potential for incredible value, but that only depends on the people instituting it and the structures they have in place to ensure it’s successful.

I could see a world where the algorithm could receive input on the patients condition each day and modify its recommendations on that; like a Bayesian inference model. But that requires a statistician with some careful thought to set it all up, and executives wouldn’t be able to reduce headcount by several dozen because some guy sold them a black box that solves all their problems.
