The Supernote A5X2 has a great box

This probably sounds like a joke, but I just wanted to mention how useful the actual cardboard box the Supernote A5X2 comes in is. I don't mean the brown one that the tablet, cover and pen come in. That one's really nice and upcyclable too (once you pull out the inner separator it makes a great folder organizer).

The one I mean is . I carry my Manta around daily in a backpack, and it sits in that one box that it came in. You need to carve out the cardboard in a couple of places to make room for it with the cover on, but otherwise it makes for a perfectly sturdy, light and practical case. The magnetic closing mechanism is just right (you can partially open it to slide the tablet out while in the backpack without taking the whole box out), the dimensions are a good balance between sturdiness and heft, and for a disposable bit of packaging it's unbelievably durable.

I realize most people have thrown theirs away, but in case you haven't and are a bit paranoid (like me) about harming the tablet, try using it.

Oh yeah, and the Manta itself is ok too I guess. :)

DIY: Light

While waiting for the supernote pogo pin diy guide, figured I would solder myself a little light.

I read some where you could short two of the Pogo pins, and the third would give you 5V, however, not to ruin my new device, I decided to do it on 2x 1,5V batteries.

I do a lot of reading on the device, and I have to say, I miss a backlight.

Parts:

  • 2 × 1,5V batteries + holder
  • 3 × red Ieds, 2 × yellow leds
  • 5 × resistors (1 would be enough)
  • 3 × neodyme magnets
  • foam, wire, glue

Its a bit on the heavy side. Using the supernote battery would indeed be preferable in the long run. Gives off a nice light!

Simple schematic and more pictures below.

Edit: Lemmy won't let me add photos for now, will try again later.. Edit: Worked.

DIY: Loop + G2 pen with refill

I love the DIY aspects of the supernote. So I figured I'd share a few of the things I've created, to help breathe life into this community on the lemmy side of things.

The first is a 3D-printed pen insert and this little rubber band loop. I 3D-printed this one 1 and combined it with a refill I got from the EU store 2. A tight fit into a G2 pilot pen, but it settles nicely in there. I kinda broke off the thick part of the large housing on the 3D-print, but it still works fine. Push-up function works well. I love these pens, and its great writing with.

The loop is a little piece of rubber band I just sown together, and jammed it inside one of the screw holes of the supernote before tightening it. Its a little flappy, but the pen follows along the supernote a6x2 nicely.

Favourite new features?

Due to life stuff, I've not used my supernote as much over the last year. Now I've got time to get back to writing I'm excited to install all the updates and see the new features.

Last time I was up on things, atelier had just come out and I played around with it a bit. Anyone got a favourite feature that's been added? Or any less obvious tool or trick you enjoy?

So far, I've come across the straight line tool (thanks to a helpful pop-up) and it's been excellent. I use my SN for drawing plans and designs for a house renovation, so the straight lines make things a lot less sloppy looking!

A5X2 Product Page

Seems Ratta put up the A5X2 page by mistake earlier today.

It has since been taken down but it was archived at the link posted.

The A5X2 is named "Manta".

Who knows if the price is correct or was a placeholder, but it says "starting at $459" which is great news of true.

Sideloading APKs - Overall opinion?

I have the older A6X. Jealous of the ability the A6X2 has for sideloading android APKs.

Does anyone who has a Nomad/A6X2 and has sideloaded apps have any info on their experiences with various apps?

Seems the device has been out long enough now that there should be some decent info on how this feature has been working for people in general.

More Atelier sketching

Still messing around with Atelier and figuring out the combo of which tools it offers and which stylus to use.

The pencil tool and the Staedtler Noris Jumbo is the best combo for how I like to sketch so far. This sketch is the 8B pencil.

I wish the pen/ink tools were better. The screen on the Supernote really is nice to draw on

Staedtler stylus comparison

I've had the Staedtler Noris Jumboand love it for drawing. I just purchased the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Jumbo and wanted to test the differences using the pencils in Atelier.

Here's a photo of the results.

The columns are:

L - Light pressure lines

H - Hard pressure lines

T - Tilt/attempting to shade lightly

X - Crosshatching with various pressure

The Mars is soft feeling like the Noris, which I like. But I found that I could not get as light a pressure /line with the Mars as I could with the Noris. You can see that in the photo too.

I think I'll stick with the Noris for art, but will add the Mars to the rotation for note taking.

Supernote A* X2 upgrades?

Hey everyone,

does anyonehave reliable information on a possible of upgraded Supernote tablets? I read that X2 versions are planned for Q3 or Q4 of 2023 and that there will even be an A4 but I'm not sure how reliable my source was since I only saw this on some random YouTube channel and no reliable source like Good-E-Reader.

Do you know anything about this? Is it worth waiting for the upgrades?

For those who write...

I've just made this community because Supernote related content was one of the last things I'm still checking reddit for. I'm not a regular content creator, so I'm probably not going to be posting lots of new, useful stuff. But now if any other SN users search on lemmy, there's somewhere to start talking!
