Judo Diary - Session 12(ish)

This is an idea I've been playing with in terms of tracking my progress, encouraging others and directing my own path forward.

For background I am in the UK, very much in the heavy weight category (just under 300lbs//around 21 stone) and I am a white belt. Although this is the first post I am on around my 12th session and tend to go twice a week.

To summarise my journey so far: I had some knowledge of break falls which we tested and practiced in my first session alongside learning grips, very basic etiquette and, I think, some osoto otoshi and scarf holds. I also got to try some randori though I forget the details.

Since then I've been working mostly on the BJA red belt syllabus - osoto otoshi, uki goshi and de-ashi barai alongside kesa, muna and kuzure kesa game with the associated escapes.

This week we did some drilling of the three syllabus throws and trying to hit a throw in three different directions. The higher belts did similar but more advanced drills. We then had some randori. I was trying a new technique for osoto otoshi against a stiff arm opponent which is more of a side step and hip twist to drag uke to where I want him for the side-step action. I didn't manage to land it in randori but it did surprise my orange belt opponent who complimented the entry which was positive.

Training again on Friday and generally i want to focus on: Standing straight during throws and randori to make use of my height (6ft 4) Staying loose Breaking balance and generally improving my entries

Would love feedback about my goals, general comments and discussion and any questions about how I'm finding judo, how I got started etc... I'm very keen to show people that judo isn't scary or hard to start.

Preparing for first tournament

Hi all, I will be participating in my first local tournament in ~3 weeks. Planning to ask my sensei for advice this week but thought I'd ask here too :)

What are the most important things to focus on between now and then? Any tips for nerves and "mental" preparation, like things to do the day before/morning of? I am planning to ask for grip fighting practice and maybe 1-2 good entries for my favorite throw, is there anything else you would recommend?

Thanks.

>100 Subscibers and Touching Base

Hi all!

We have just passed 100 subscribers (massive number I know haha) and I thought it would be a good opportunity to touch base and see what we should do here to increase engagement.

As most of you likely know, I am still a mod over at "the other site" and, though I have strong feelings about what they are doing as a company, I feel the community there has a lot of good people so I intend to continue to perform that role (the "glorified janitor" as one user kindly pointed out).

Having said that, I don't want this place to just be a mirror-universe version of r/judo. Lemmy and similar platforms are built around community first and foremost, and I would love to see that side of things grow.

Access to automated mod tools etc. is obviously much more primitive over here (feel free to leave suggestions if you have any) so automated posts and such are likely to be more difficult for now, but is there anything y'all wish we could do here?

Obviously one of the big draws of r/judo is the amazing wiki that Geschichtenerzaehler has put together and I have no intention of stealing that for here (though I'd be happy to copy it here if he was okay with it of course). We don't have anything like that, however I'd love to hear what you all think we could do to make this more than just a dumping ground of a few videos here and there.

Cheers!

Bullet Proof Your Knees & Unlock The Explosive Power Of Your Soleus Muscle With These Mobility Standards

According to this guy these mobility tests/exercises can protect your knees.

Also increasing ankle flexibility allows development of the Soleus muscle, which he claims has the strongest pull of any muscle in the body.

I've had bad ankle mobility for years and noticed an immediate improvement in range after just 1 set (on either side) of the first exercise demonstrated.
