c/Drugs is Back!

Community Intro

This community is now back and open for posting! Thanks to the Lemmy.world admins for granting me the mod role here.

My current goal for this community is for it to serve as the main, central community branching out into smaller, more substance-specific communities. Currently, the network is small, including:

  • c/weed - Cannabis Discussion
  • c/psy - Psychedelic Discussion
  • c/mdma - MDMA / Ecstasy Discussion
  • c/drank - Alcohol Discussion
  • c/opi - Opiate Discussion

I'm also open to suggestions for other communities, and in need of people to help moderate them. (Lemmy usually doesn't require much, if any, moderation, but I'd still like to have a team of people anyway.)

Rules

The most critical rule for this and all related communities is NO SOURCING. Asking where to buy any drugs, including unregulated drugs, even in a "hey hit me up in DM's" sort of way, could get us shut down or worse. This is the regular old clearnet internet, the mods here and the Lemmy.world admins still have to worry about the law. It's not a moral thing and it is prohibition bullshit, but it's the world we've got for now, so work with us there please.

Aside from that, just be as kind as you can be to the people who are kind to you, don't recommend that people do anything which is more dangerous than drug use already inherently is (ie dangerous doses or combos), and we'll be good. (Note that these topics can still be discussed, people just shouldn't be encouraged to participate in behaviors which could cause them harm.)

Also, minors are not permitted to use c/Drugs or any of our networked communities. I don't think there are too many minors on Lemmy, but doesn't hurt to clarify that anyway.

Welcome again to c/Drugs!

Concept Credit

The concept and structure for the network of drug-related communities comes from my experience on 420chan over a decade ago (I am old). For those unfamiliar with 420chan, it was nothing like 4chan. It was the old internet, so it still had its problems (ie racism, which obviously won't be permitted here). But for example, it had a dedicated (supportive) transgender board and issued permanent bans to people who posted loli content. By old-internet-anonymous-imageboard standards, it wasn't the worst place to hang out.

It was also an important place for a weird young person like I was at the time, who wanted to know more about aspects of the world which were presented as taboo, but also wanted to know what was genuinely unsafe.

So thank you to Kirtaner and the mod team for all those fun years. When Kirt gets out of prison (for allegedly hacking the Texas Republican Party), if he wants me to stop using the old 420chan icons, just let me know. I just figured I'd do this because there are no plans to revive the original site and it serves an important function I think.

c/MDMA is now part of the c/Drugs network, and is open for user submissions!

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/46674861

Greetings friends, and welcome to c/mdma!

This community has been shutdown / closed to new posts for 3 years for unclear reasons. It's now open to the public again!

c/mdma is now part of the c/drugs network of communities. c/drugs serves as the central Hub, branching off into more substance-specific discussions from there.

This also includes the establishment of some basic rules for this community:

Rules

(These rules apply across all communities in the c/Drugs network.)

No Sourcing - Do not request sources of any drugs at any time. This includes unregulated research chemicals. Any attempts, including "hit me up in DMs" type of requests, will result in a ban. This rule is necessary to keep this community open.

Harm Reduction - Do not recommend inherently dangerous doses or combinations of substances, or otherwise encourage behavior more risky than drug use already is by default. Clear attempts at causing intentional harm will result in a ban.

Avoid Dangerous Recommendations - Avoid recommending substances that have a reasonable chance of causing considerable harm to the user. For example, DPH, inhalants, or opioids. This rule is necessary to conform with Lemmy.World's Terms of Service. Posts violating this rule will be removed.

No Minors - Users under 18 years old are not permitted to use this community.

☺c/MDMA Rules☺

  • Keep It Friendly - Be kind to your fellow humans. Disagreements, even impassioned ones, are fine. If you bring it down to the level of personal insults or excessive hostility, your posts may be removed. You may be banned in especially severe instances such as racism, sexism, Nazism, Zionism, etc.

One bad comedown and Kim Jong-un presses the red button, or so I imagined lol

It’s universally known that Kim Jong-un produces and distributes various substances and I could imagine that he also consumes.

While watching a documentary about North Korea, I imagined him having a really bad comedown on whatever he took and deciding “fuck it, scorched earth”, pressing the red button in a state of mania and sending nukes across the globe, resulting in an all out war against global forces, a one man army (and his military state), a captain sinking with his ship.

I should go to sleep, it’s 5am. :D

Scientists Engineered a Plant to Produce 5 Different Psychedelics at Once

[P]lant scientists Paula Berman and Janka Höfer and their team set out to map and rebuild the biochemical pathways behind these compounds.

They identified the key genes used by two plants – Psychotria viridis and Acacia acuminata – to make DMT, and the step-by-step chemical pathways involved in producing the compound.

Then, they combined these with genes and pathways already known from psychedelic mushrooms (Psilocybe cubensis) and the cane toad (Rhinella marina), added supporting enzymes from rice and cress, then genetically introduced the combined genetic toolkit and kaboodle into tobacco plants (Nicotiana benthamiana).

The tobacco was chosen not because of its own drug production, but because it's basically the lab rat of plant species, with its fast growth.

Finally, the team carefully monitored the plant's production of five psychedelic tryptamines: DMT originally from plants; psilocin and psilocybin from mushrooms; and bufotenin and 5-MeO-DMT from toads.

The modified tobacco plants were found to produce all five compounds simultaneously. Because the different production pathways compete for the same resources, some compounds were produced in lower quantities than in their original sources.

However, the production was high enough to suggest that with a bit more tweaking, the system could function as a biological tryptamine factory for researchers.

Vivarin vs generic caffeine pills. Why does Vivarin hit so much harder?

I’m confused about caffeine pills.

Vivarin (200 mg), pic related and as of recent drug of choice works way better for me than off brand tablets. Feels like ~8 hours of energy. Then a big crash.

Tried many off-brand caffeine tablets, even double dose. Mostly just headaches though and not the same “clean” alertness.

I assumed quality control or additives or what not. But it’s literally just caffeine, right? Do other people see this? Could tablet fillers / how fast it dissolves matter? Or is this just tolerance + timing + placebo?

What’s the actual mechanism here?

Vivarin is the first time I understand why some people call it poor people's meth...

New study reinforces likelihood that "kykeon", the sacred elixir of the Eleusinian Mysteries, was composed of LSA and related compounds

Abstract

This study revisits the hypothesis that Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul., a fungus infecting cereals and producing ergot alkaloids (EAs), was the psychedelic agent in kykeon, the sacred elixir of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Although archaeological evidence supports this link, experimental data confirming the transformation of toxic ergopeptides into psychoactive lysergic acid amide derivatives in putative ancient preparations remain limited. The potential hydrolysis products of ergot were investigated using a technique that could have been readily applied by the priestesses of Eleusis, notably reacting in lye. Pulverized sclerotia were refluxed in solutions of lye and in distilled water. Samples obtained after liquid-liquid extractions were analyzed with 1H-NMR and UHPLC/Q-TOF-HRMS. The 1H NMR spectra demonstrated conversion of toxic ergopeptides, present in control samples but absent at all reaction times in 5% w/v ergot treated with pH 12.5 lye, where characteristic peaks for lysergic acid amide (LSA; ergine) and isolysergic acid amide (iso-LSA; isoergine; erginine) appeared. UHPLC/Q-TOF-HRMS quantitation confirmed this conversion, yielding 0.54 mg LSA and 0.48 mg iso-LSA per gram of ergot at 120 min. The chemical transformation of toxic EAs to psychoactive compounds, utilizing ancient technology, was demonstrated and supports the “psychedelic Eleusis” hypothesis.

10 Million Americans Microdosed in 2025, According to the RAND Corporation's study

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/42316499

Psilocybin was the most popular, followed (surprisingly) by Amanita muscaria, then MDMA, then LSD.

That means 3.7% of the American population has microdosed. If you ask me, we have to up those numbers, and those dosages... it's not a bad start, but I'm worried that it's a way to cheapen the psychedelic experience, lending it to "enhancing productivity" instead of rewiring your psyche and breaking down social constructs.

If it helps people, it can't be a bad thing. I just hope it doesn't stop at "micro" for most people.

What do you all think?

Convenience of powdering substances

I like doing coke sometimes, but it can be a bothersome process to pour from a baggie, cut it up, and needing to roll some paper or have a straw. Especially if you're out.

It's there a quicker or more convenient method? I've heard of tiny bottles with 1 hit doses, nasal sprays, even pressurized solutions.

What do you recommend? This could of course extend to other substances as well.

Phantosmia in Psychedelics vs COVID

Recently I had COVID and as I powered through my headaches, I started to realize I was feeling a familiar smell - one that I had associated with being high on psychedelics.

As I thought about it, I realized more and more that it was the exact same smell, one that was deep in my trip memories. It isn't an unpleasant smell, just unique. And then I started thinking that COVID could be affecting similar parts of the brain as psychedelics and triggering a similar phantosmia (smell hallucinations).

I am wondering if this is something anyone else has noticed or was it just my own brain? Any comments?
