A moment of appreciation for a man who is undoubtedly the world's most successful promoter of Lemmy and the fediverse

A man who grabbed our concept of a centralized internet by the balls and squeezed it so hard that the Lemmy’s user count 65xed in a 3 months period. Thank you for your service

Not as attractive as a cunt or an asshole, he's a dickface.

3
lemmy.ml

Idk, dicks can be pretty hot. A hairy ballsack, now that's almost universally seen as not attractive

4
Enzyreply

Please do not insult my ballsack like that.

2

As a lifelong dick owner I tend to disagree. But to each their own.

1
lemmy.wtf

After seeing his face I'd rather use a different terminology.

53
lemmy.world

Pretty sure that was my last Reddit comment. Can’t check because I haven’t seen my account since Apollo died.

10
lemmy.world

nsfw tag please? I nearly vomited from seeing his face

lemm.ee

It really is funny. The only reason I went to reddit is that my phone app for news at the time (2011) took a shit and someone recommended reddit. I downloaded an app and that was the only way I interacted with reddit for over a decade. Then he killed that app and I figured if I'm going to have to adjust to a new app, I'm going elsewhere. What a dumbass.

84
lemmy.world

I don't even need to adjust to a new app anymore now that boost is here lol

Boost was the BEST app (in my opinion) for Reddit. I was excited yesterday when I finally got the notification that Boost for Lemmy was out!

6

Are you talking money, or more in the "make them pay for their insolence" kind of pay? I think we already have the latter.

12

Apparently not, since they are taking away the meaningless Internet awards that were essentially a free source of money. I'm still baffled by that situation.

4
lemmy.ca

You can't mention those and not mention Larry Ellison. If it weren't for him, OpenOffice wouldn't have forked.

The link doesn’t load. What did Gates do that you‘d put him in the same category as the rest?

My first reaction upon seeing this picture is "that guy has serious nazi energy" Sure enough, I was right.

49
sh.itjust.works

I see it too, but does he seriously? I used to go on reddit a lot, but never followed the personalities very closely

9
lemm.ee

i dont think so, but he did edit peoples comments so they agreed with what spez believes

and reddit used to have a running joke of mods and admins being nazis, which the admins also joked about but that was a decade ago

13

There are a fair few mods who are genuinely installed by the admins to be fascists, and if any of the other mods complain they get kicked out. Also I have yet to see a single instance of some group in power joking that they're nazis where they didn't end up actually being nazis.

4

He's famous for having said that he's looking forward to the zombie apocalypse because it would let him live his fantasy of being a slaver.

There was also a hate subreddit where the mods all had a collective turn of heart and decided to shut down, but then reddit stepped in, reestablished the place, cleared house and then installed a new set of mods so that the subreddit could keep running. Yes, seriously.

9

Someone look into it i heard he was into free speech and i wouldn't put it past spez to kill that guy for some personel gain.

1
RQG
lemmy.world

When I look at the guy and then at what he did. I think he really looks the part.

35
lemm.ee

Same. My very first thought upon seeing a picture of this ghoul was "of course he looks like that"

12

Right?! Why does he look exactly like the kind of guy that would moderate r/Jailbait?

6

Come on guys, it’s not funny anymore. Give him back his chin.

30
lemm.ee

Reddit is the only major platform I've ever been banned from. And no it wasn't intentional.

30
lemmy.world

I was banned from /r/funny for commenting on a spam post, place is so dumb

13

banned from /r/halo, these people/mods are thick, no offense meant, but thick

4
Onfirereply
lemmy.world

My 12 year account was banned. Still not sure why. Prior to that, i was banned from r/idiotsincars for speaking out against stereotypical jokes on Asians with bad driving by stating the statistics that Asians are not the worst driver. I guess that ruined their joke in that subreddit. Then they shadow banned me. My new accounts posts can't be seen by the public.

2
lemm.ee

See I kept trying to tell people, cuz I was in that Century Club thing that you get from having me a certain amount of likes my comment or Good Karma or whatever.

And I told people that sub reddit bans need to be made 90 days of the longest, simply because the permanent bans were being blatantly abused.

I had many people agreeing with me

Seems like they doubled down

Onfirereply

To be honest, Reddit is too liberal. And this is coming from a long time liberal voter. You can't say anything anymore. Everything is sensitive and inappropriate base on what's trendy. Freedom of speech means there should be of different voices. But reddit only wants certain voices. Apparently, the downvoting system is not enough. They have to go extra step to let a small group of individuals to decide, okay this guy will be forever banned from posting on Reddit. That's insane amount of power and influence. I now lost my voice on one of the most popular and engaging social media platform. Crazy huh.

1

Exactly, honestly, even though it's not as okay to say as it used to be, it almost felt liberating to see the word "retarded" used on a forum without that person being automatically banned.

1
lemmy.ml

Reddit summarized: I got temp banned from a subreddit for calling a neo-nazi a cracker so I made the mod's message "Calling someone a cracker isn't standing up to racism" my flair on SubredditDrama where I proceeded to get perm banned from for spoiling Hogwarts Legacy before literally everyone on that subreddit started doing it so it was reduced to a temp. Oh and that one time I got a perm from a certain hexbear-affiliated subreddit for pointing out that some guy receiving a bunch of positive attention was probably an anti-semite but it would be a few years later before I got banned entirely off that site. Point is, reddit mods will ban you over the stupidest shit.

1

It really is telling that I've been on the internet since way before I should have been on the internet, and the only thing I've ever been banned from are various credits and then Reddit itself.

4
explodiclereply
local106.com

Yep I don't miss it either. In hindsight I think I had enough of liberals condescendingly explaining to me that this is the "end of history".

-12

He may even be more skilled at ruining platforms than Elon Musk, and that is no easy task

22
feddit.de

We all know the BIGGEST promoter of the Fediverse but he's certainly the biggest for Lemmy!

22
Enzyreply

Elon should buy reddit too.

That way he can kill two toxic platforms!

2
lemm.ee

Wait, is that spez? I kinda pictured him looking more pale and android like, more similar to zuck than this.

21
lemm.ee

To me he looks a lot more human than zuck and slightly less pale. Maybe it's the difference in screen/hardware, since I don't use blue light filters and let my eyes burn.

5
pingvenoreply
lemmy.ml

I think he's kind of cute, but I have a thing for blond guys.

4

I hope the bots are helping with that ad revenue you were so concerned about milking from the user base with your shitty app. Was it worth it, dumbass?

19

Lemmy, sure, but probably not the fediverse I'd guess, since the most popular fedi platform is mastodon, meant to recreate Twitter rather than Reddit

12
pingvenoreply
lemmy.ml

Elon Musk gets to take credit for some of Mastodon's popularity me thinks.

9
mercreply
sh.itjust.works

Yeah, Lemmy's popularity is due to the enshittification of Reddit. But, Mastodon is bigger and its popularity is entirely due to Elon Musk setting fire to $40b.

2
pingvenoreply
lemmy.ml

That whole debacle is so satisfying. From the beginning, he has bungled everything about it. I get so much schadenfreude watching the patron saint of "I am very smart" bleeding money.

2

I also like how it's affecting all the other businesses: Tesla, Space X, etc. People who looked up to him were proud to own Teslas, now people are ashamed, and looking more critically. Any factions in the government who were happy to rely on Space X to resupply the ISS are now probably having to defend their assessments. I just hope that it spreads to other "genius" billionaires like Ellison and Bezos and their businesses.

You can take the turd out of the toilet, but you can't take the toilet out of the turd.

11
lemmy.ml

He wants to deep kiss Zuckerberg... at both ends of Zuckerberg.

He's also got his eye on musk the blot. Good loving there too!

8

He's hoarding them for when reddit goes down completely

3
lemmy.world

You haven't said who this is? Is he supposed to be some globally recognisable celebrity?

He's not famous here in the UK.

7

Cunty McCuntface, known for being the CEO of Reddit. And if that doesn't ring a bell he himself has basically said he's a wannabe Musk. That should give a good indication of the kind of person we're dealing with here.

9
lemmy.world

Did this man come for a reason besides Reddit

Cause if so that's awesome and quite rare from what I've seen

1

Acct created June 9, 2023. Probably not, but I also didn’t recognize spezs face

2

Everyone at school was legally required to bully him and it was talking up too much time from everyone's schedules (not to mention the regular bullies who basically had their duties doubled, underpaid teachers had to bully him in their spare time, etc) ... so they told him he was a boy genius, gave him a degree & threw him out - now he's everyone else's problem.

2

Now, we have centralized communities on privately held domains names. How is that supposed to not go exactly like digg/Reddit all over again, if it ever becomes popular ?

6
Mikereply
lemmy.ml

Because in theory, there will be "sister" communities on different servers and everyone can just go somewhere else on the same platform.

12
boCashreply
lemmy.blugatch.tube

IMO, the master stroke is to 'sub-federate' communites. Allow each special interest community on each instance to join into the same feed.

6
lemmy.ml

I should be able to go to /c/books on any server and see all /c/book from all servers. Content discovery and curation/moderation filters are then applied in top of the raw feed as subscriptions chosen by the user with community suggested defaults chosen out of the choices from high reputation users's subscription.

2
boCashreply
lemmy.blugatch.tube

I like that concept but I'm worried that weighting anything by superusers opens the door to astroturf, spam, and trolls.

1

That door is already wide open.

There is always going to be a content discovery algorithm or what you will not be able to find anything.

The question is, do you want to be able to control that algorithm or do you want to leave it up to instance owners ?

We need people to sort the good stuff and the bad stuff. Computers are still bad at it when they don't take human"a preferences into account.

Objective sorting is useless. It's essential, to be able to sort chronological and alphabetical, but it's a special use case, unless you're the story of person who read the dictionary for fun.

I think individual users being able to subscribe to moderation and curation in the form of a selection and sorting filter running inside the client of the user, would be a great improvement to every other social media out there.

Let the user subscribe to the comment deleters that they like, and the upvotes that agree with their taste. Let them play with the selection weights of each subscribtion filter, right in the user interface, not hidden in a backend database.

1

In practice there's a big one and unless there's a big schism that fragments the community, the big community will suck the air out for any smaller community in any topic.

Worse if it actually worked as intended and each tiny community stayed fragmented forever and em never amounted to anything.

I question if it is by design to prevent the formation of true, fediverse wide, decentralized but coalesced community.

If it is by accident, then it is a huge missed opportunity.

But I don't think it's by accident. The protagonist of Lemmy is the instance owner and the moderator, not the user. So the important part of the network is the instance fiefdom, not the whole network. Instances should just be another mirror of the whole, instead of tiny dictatorships.

1

Just erased all my comments and deleted my account. I will be a read-only user, because YourSearchEngine will probably suggest me some reddit results in my tech/misc requests.

EDIT: I refer to the tool i used here: https://lemmy.ninja/comment/1943034

4

And yet he makes more money out of it.

Thats the real shame those enshittifications dont have consequences as long as people dont change and i know most wont

3
lemm.ee

Wait, he hurts butts of teenagers too?? Outrageous, but not unexpected.

6
lemm.ee

I read it somewhere that he likes fish sticks and smells of elderberries.

1
lemm.ee

You guys are getting karma? Can I sell it on Reddit for irl bottle caps?

I just generally never do anything so I'm karma neutral, perfectly balanced, like all things should live long and prosper.

1

Sloths are immune to carma attacks confirmed.

Tho sometimes they bloom green (algae in the fur) & basically absorb CO2 so in current conditions that's a slippery slope towards positive carma.

... those lazy bitches gonna get extinct via passive-aggressive positive carma attack from anxiety monkeys. Tbh, that's a pretty niche attack to anticipate like 5+ million years ago, they stood no chance.

Hello there king ubermeisters,

It is I, the humble spokesperson for all of Lemmy. We sincerely apologize for falling short of your almighty opinion of opinions and expectations! How naive of us to air our own feelings about someone online and forget about your precious opinions and reaction to reactions.

In the future we will try Uber hard to think about your all-important feelings about another lying corpo pig who outright lied and defrauded one of his own user base. Surely one day your ball gobbling sycophant glory will be repaid in full through a deep and rough anal plunging you so clearly desire. Soon you will join the ranks of your masters - do not fret us lowly people.

Sincerely,

Eat shit.

4

Dude not only had to go through my post history to come up with something but STILL only came up with “only idiots use the word sycophant”

Don’t try to play like your self esteem isn’t so low that, despite blocking me, you’ll still come back to check.

Stay bitter and angry and continue to wonder why our life is so miserable.
