I grew up in Ohio in the '70s. We would get our first snow in late September and by the end of October the ground would have permanent snow cover. We wouldn't see grass again until some time in April with the last snow coming in May. The giant mounds of plowed snow would last into June. It's hard for me to even imagine a six-month Winter now, but that's what we got.

In Summer the "heat wave" was when it got to 85°F during the day.

I remember as a kid making a Wolverine costume. This is way before Hugh Jackman too so we used s yellow sweatshirt with like blue felt or some blue cloth I think. It's been a long time so I don't quite recall all the details . But I remember it was made out of a sweatshirt. And I trick or treated in it fine. It was comfortable. These days I don't even get my sweatshirts out of storage until January, late January. Maybe get to wear them for 3 weeks.

Many of my childhood memories of Halloween include snow. I'm in lower middle of Sweden, now its rare to see any snow before the end of December.

In Texas, we've actually seen more snow the last 5 years than the previous 20, but also more extreme heat. It's just extremes all around.

Our weather comes in the form of months-long heatwaves and droughts, isolated severe floods that saturate the ground and wash downstream instead of replenishing aquifers, and the annual extreme cold snap in February.

"Everything is bigger in texas." holds true, even for weather swings.

Oh yeah, it's just not warmer for longer. I was just thinking about adding stuff about this to the previous comment.
The past decade it's been increasingly common with what seems like an extreme early winter, full blizzard for about a week in early October and then it's like the weather goes "nah, I'll give you some more summer" and it's barely fall season till early november.
It really shows how fucked everything already is when it's generally much warmer for longer here and much colder for longer for you in Texas, with episodes for both of what I've started calling "extreme bipolar weather".
And I know neither of us are experiencing the real extremes that are happening in many places around the world, an increasing and already scary amount of people are dying every year from all the crazy shit going on with the environment. Heat strokes, hypothermia, floods, drought etc. and it's not even close to how bad it will get in our lifetimes.
It's fucking scary, and a completely valid reason to hate humanity and society as it is (and has been for a long time).

I want to say probably for around the past 5-7 years, it's been ~60-70 degrees F within a few days of Christmas. One year I literally went out on Christmas day without a jacket because it was mid 70's. Definitely never had that when I was younger.

3 years ago I had to rake some leaves on 31st of December and it was so warm I only had a tshirt on

I am 53 and that was not my experience at all. Every Halloween was hot and I use to sweat in my costume, especially under those cheap plastic masks.

Maybe the fact that I grew up in the Carribean has something to do with it. Who knows? It's a mystery.

::: spoiler no your experience was abnormal it used to snow in the Carribean :::

I remember as a kid not wanting to wear a jacket cuz it would ruin my costume and regretting it because it was snowing. But I lived in the mountains in Colorado at the time.

It's strange though, it's cold here in Perth rn and it's normally hot as fuck this time of year. Like over 30 c

Our forecast for Halloween in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is a high of 49°f and a low of 31°f. If I had a kid, I'd dress him up as an Ewok, but they'd probably wanna dress as Monkey D. Luffy. Nothing but a vest, jorts, sandals, and a straw hat.

Yeah, it used to snow here on Halloween now and then. Haven't seen a Halloween snow since a bit before COVID, iirc.

In 2012, Connecticut postponed Halloween a week or more because we received record snow fall in a nor' eastern turn blizzard. It cut power to many communities for weeks into the cold fall. I had to shower at a friends house a few times because without power our ground water was stuck in the ground.

We are lucky here I guess? It was 29 this morning and climbed up to a warm 70 for a couple of hours. Not looking forward to my heating bill.

I can't even imagine low enough humidity for that kind of variance.

3

It has been like that all week. Very interesting (boring) but comfortable pattern. I felt like a lizard basking in the sun yesterday because in the shade it was winter.

2

Yeah, we get oversized costume and wear jacket under it. Otherwise what's the point of costume, just get a mask instead.

1

I remember this. Even in Florida where I grew up. Now I understand people are in their shorts mowing their yard on Christmas Day.

It's an Irish holiday that is celebrated in America and elsewhere.

1

It's a Celtic festival, so likely from all the Celtic nations but I've heard it more as an Irish and Scottish festival than welsh or Breton.

I think most of the records relqte to after Christianity so its less clear.

2

We celebrate it but instead of candy we hand out beer and universal healthcare to the kids.

I ain’t gonna lie it’s been hot in October since I moved to Texas in 2000. If anything its colder now than it used to be to be. It didn’t get cold until late November early December and now we have some cold fronts here and there that give us phenomenal weather starting in October.

My electricity bill 100% disagrees on the "colder than it used to be" part.

2

Just my personal experience. I’m sure on average the numbers tell a different story.

Gotta go back a bit farther. I remember trick or treating in South Texas in the early 90s and one time I had a cloak on that was normally stupid hot but it was perfect on a crisp Halloween night. Sadly never again.

"There's no such thing as world hunger because I ate breakfast just this morning" type shit

To be fair, esentially all of the comments here are based on personal experiences. It would not be a much of a discussion, if everyone was just throwing scientific facts around... The scientific results do support warming, though, denying that is stupid.

It used to snow in Colorado on the Front Range around this time of year.

It has not this year. I don't think it will either.

17

There was a stat last year about Colorado. It was the first year in history that every single Denver Broncos home football game was higher than 60°.

5

Socal been in crazy heat waves this sept and oct. it just finally stopped. Was 105F / 40C in my house not long ago

5

It's been mid to upper seventies for three weeks with overnight lows still in the fifties.

So there's this thing called Lemmy... and it's like reddit, only without the corporate restrictions. So it can't become a walled garden... but it's still gonna be essentially like reddit.

Yeah I was pissed having to run a race in the freezing weather yesterday morning
