Ubisoft reportedly wasted 3 years turning Beyond Good & Evil 2 into a live-service Fortnite killer, but now it's a single-player-focused game with co-op

"This is what the statistics says not what gamers want!" -fucking corporate financebros.
Also, why the hell compete in an overcrowded live service battle royale shooter market? Have corporates not heard of blue ocean strategy?
Years ago, just as the first teaser dropped, I was an "insider" on the project. The direction they had was pretty clear; single player with some co-op. RPG with robust character creator and classes. Open world with seamless ground-to-space travel, and a single solar system to explore with your pirate ship.
They showed off some early gameplay, their city tech, and their planet generation tech. Then silence.
I'm technically still an "insider", but they just stopped sending updates about 10 years ago.
Now you're telling my they scrapped all of that to make a Fortnite game, then scrapped that to make a 4 player live service game, they scrapped that too and now we're right back where we fucking started at single player with some co-op!?
Feels like Duke Nukem Forever.
at this point, the only question is "What could possibly go right?"
That is quite literally the stupidest thing you could have done with the franchise.
For that matter, I've always wondered why anyone would invest notably sums of money into Beyond Good and Evil. The first game was fine, but it seems to continue to be one of the great money pits in the gaming industry.
Why the fuck would a Beyond Good And Evil sequel be a Fortnite clone?
Because pizza is good and cake is good. Lets just imagine how fantastic it would be if they are mixed together.
No!
You just described every single attempt at homemade pizza i ever did
Because money.
It'd be like making Godfather 2 a stoner comedy.
Ubisoft is an anti-corporation in that it brings together valuable assets into something worth far less than the sum of the parts individually.
Ubisoft is allergic to good decisions. At this point it's been a good decade since the last time they made a game that i wanted to play.
I think the last one I played from them was a cooperative effort with Nintendo, the Mario + Rabbids games. I only played the first, but did enjoy it; thought it was a solid tactics game. I wanted to play the latest Prince of Persia, the 2D one, but didn't get around to it. Heard good things. But, that's about it for me. I never was a huge fan of their games. They seem to often target mediocrity, with series like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry having way too many entries, with too few bangers, and bargain prices to quickly follow.
The Metroidvania Prince of Persia (Lost Crown) is amazing, the rouge lite Prince of Persia is just okay.
And then the second Mario+Rabbids is another designed-by-committee, unfocused game that adds grinding and busywork to a game that never needed them.
They just have to make all their games converge toward the same mediocre model.
Actually you're right I forgot about Mario + Rabbids which I played at my sister's house 9 years and it seemed ok.
Really? I was convinced they cancelled it years ago. Huh.
They may as well have. If they ever do end up releasing something, it won't be anything like what they promised in the beginning.
What would be the beginning in your reference frame? because they also presented something 10 years after the first game that wasn't fortnite but was still already nothing like a continuation of the first game.
Planet-sized procedural open-world that's mainly oriented for multiplayer, and chronologically a prequel with new characters, despite the fact BG&E ended with a huge mess left to be resolved. With a weird community artist plan for people who wanted to contribute art for the game.
If I am not mistaken the only "promise" we got before that was a "leaked" cinematic with BG&E characters that they provided zero comment for.
So that's (one reason) why it's been delayed to hell and back?
Technically it's never been delayed, they never set dates
Wait what? I never would've thought this was still in development.
Ugh... it's literally your job to have good grammar
I don't think you understand the gist of that turn of phrase. The author is using it quite correctly.
I think OP is complaining about the missing "a" before "real", but that's such a minor error it's hard to believe it was worth typing out that message.
