YSK - (bigger) straws are often designed to make you drink more, faster. Get a smaller diameter set of stainless steel drinking straws no greater in diameter at the opening than 1/4 inch, in*stead*

Just bought a new set and I'm back to my glory days of being able to sip anything thoughtfully, slowly languorously (—more like langloriously—), and much less addictively.

I get to enjoy my drinks longer and saving money on overconsumption. Its good to have a little friction and slightly work for it a little ;)

Its far more satisfying especially with anything carbonated or rich.

Much much much better for pacing urself. Get them in a fun color or something easier on the eyes like black or dark grey/blue

Edit: please dont use them for noseclams (cocaine). Best stick with your friendly neighborhood $5 CAD, whatever € note. Dont invest in USD

You should see how quickly I can make a pint disappear or a bottle of water without a straw.

Well I can't say I can or cannot try this, but I do wonder if the same applies nose candy now lol

Blowcaine should only be done off of small silver spoons anyway. It's classy.

3

Thats valid too. The point is to be purposeful I guess, for water a wider one is objectivelt probably a better idea.

I like to make sparkingly mineral waters with a cap of pure lemon juice and I want it to last so I use a narrow straw in a Yeti so it stays cold and the straw helps me slow down and sip more consciously

Jamming a metal needle into the roof of my mouth when I trip while drinking water.

6

this doesn't make sense to me, by this logic not using a straw is also "designed" to make you drink faster..

8
lemmy.ml

We're you born with no arms? You can skip the whole straw if you raise the glass to your lips, tilt it, pour some liquid into your mouth. Be careful! When your mouth gets too full make sure to lower the glass so you don't spill any beverage!

Jokes aside, I've read that straws help protect teeth while drinking acid or sweet sodas, because you get less soda on your teeth (duh)

What does your comment even mean, its just a glib catchy slacker thing to say that reliably gets upvotes thru mock outrage, pretending my post is incomprehensible.

Do you just accept failing a reading comprehension test in real life like that too? Just scribble wtf did I just read and thats enough effort for today -> well-earned naptime now

Its so very tired and boring, zero value but I suppose that side has its allies too so you're always in good company ig. With every Flow ther is always an Ebb, its natural

It is just very odd to post something to YSK that has not been validated by third parties. Claims get posted without proper sources, words like “addiction” get used when talking about regular drinks. It all sounds like you have found a excuse solution for a very specific problem that you have. I doubt that the straw size was the issue. Why I believe this is so? If straws were contributing to the addiction of a beverage, fast food restaurants would be the first to abuse this fact. And as far as I can remember, the straws at McDonalds are quite thin.

1

McDonald's straws used to be fat. It's said that they made them normal-sized because people were hogging down on the free refills.

2

Just going by memory of them, I think I could fit at least 2 if not 3 to 4 of my 1/4 inch straws into a single McDonalds straw. Might have ti stretch it a bit but at least 2 could fit in the diameter of a McD's straw I belive

Is that fair to say?

Would it be fair to say that if you're mindlessly sipping it would be easier to overdo it with the larger diameter mcds straw then a straw at least half its size diameter wise?

Im pretty sure mcds straws diameter are close to a hole-punched paper hole

I consider that pretty wide compared to my ideal of 1/4"

Who hurt you to spit so much hate in a single comment?. dear lord.. you might be right but you are also an asshole, but that like ..my opinion..
Mr Rogers would not be proud about you.

2

Ur right, i was very Un-Rogerly and thats something i genuinely need to work on.

From my perspective, first of all, its an incredibly lazy, glib thing they put out there that didnt add to the discussion and direspectful on another level the way people dont like AI submissions because of the way it puts more burden on the audience then the "author" or prompter even was willing to put in by delegating its composition to AI. He might as wel have said "ya right" or "neat", i would have felt more mildly.

Its also borderline dishonest and gaslighty, acting like I'm not stringing words and sentences together coherently in a way that is comprehensible. Over 70 people think it is so its weird af to be making that kind of halfass claim and be having to stop everything and cold-press** them for their actual inteligible objection.

If thhat had come first, it would have been an entirely different discussion in content and tenor but its the laziness and gaslighting i dont appreciate.

They are free to report the post and delete it but I'm not sure that sends the right message. People vote up if they think it has legs and down if they dont. Thats okay

I dont particularly appreciate unilateral self-debutized gatekeepers/curators/arbiters chiming in how it simply isnt done, but thats their right. But they should do so right out of the gate, why was it so hard to drill doen to their actual opinion if thrg believe it so firmly? They just dont have the right to not be gatekept/curated/arbited back to as a consequence for their error

Paper straws are okay if you dip them in plastic to waterproof them. /s

Stainless steel straws make diet sodas fizz, making them undrinkable. All you get in your mouth is foam. This life hack sucks.

2

What? I have some steel straws from IKEA and I've never noticed that.

2
ZAPreply
sopuli.xyz

I often take two straws to achieve the ultimate speed.

10

Was gonna say, I'm sure there are people who, even with those wide ass mcdonalds straws, use 2-3to improve their drink game

2
lemmy.ca

Careful with the stainless steel straws. People have died when tripping and driving them into their eye socket. I own a bunch of stainless steel straws and (other than them being very hard to clean, so they harbour much more bacteria), got spooked by this.

Maybe don’t use straws at all. Drinking directly from cups is fine.

39

Doesn't a fork or butterknife have the same risk of injury? Maybe even a toothbrush if you go walking around your house while brushing.

And if you have the straw, you should also have the special brush for them.

One 60 year old woman dying in a freak accident is hardly a trend. You could do the same with a pen/pencil, wouldn’t be enough to warrant entirely removing them from my life tbh.

LillyPipreply

Was it only one person? I think the method just freaked me out, like the whole ‘you’ll shoot your eye out’ thing, but more like I can totally see my clumsy ass doing that. I’ll not dissuade others, but I’d rather not take the chance because I’m exactly that kind of klutz.

15
200okreply
lemmy.world

Reminds me of that final destination movie. I'm freaked out if I ever drive behind a logging truck.

Is it likely to happen? Absolutely not, but it feels very "moth to a flame".

12

I have to give more than the normal amount of space and get into the farthest lane. Is it rational? No. But does it hurt me? Also no. So there’s no reason not to.

I do reevaluate things like this, but with logging trucks and steel straws(as opposed to no straws), my assessment hasn’t changed.

6
CTDummyreply
piefed.social

I mean yeah that I saw, from a very, very brief search though. Haha fair enough, as a former klutz I can appreciate that.

6
LillyPipreply
lemmy.ca

I think the issue I have with a stainless steel straw is more that, unlike wandering about with a knitting needle (which I also don’t like doing… again, clumsy) is that it’s hollow. Eye or not, if you fall on it, you open a wound that’s ideal for bleeding out very quickly.

Gives me the heebie jeebies.

It feels like it’s sort of the worst thing to be impaled by.

9
lemmy.world

If it's any comfort, the straw will probably just get clogged with your flesh. If the blood pressure is high enough to push out the meat plug, you can just hold you finger over the hole. And anyway, I think the worst thing to be impaled by would be, like, a rusty shovel wrapped in Gympie-Gympie leaves or something.

2
CTDummyreply
piefed.social

Could fall on it and puncture your heart or stab yourself in the femoral artery. Most people walk with holding their drink to their side, not pointing straight at their eyeball too. Only time the straw would be aimed at your face is when you sip. Point is, it’s a pretty remote risk imo.

2
lemmy.world

Agreed completely. But I could also imagine some fool taking a sip stepping down a stair, tripping, and impaling themself. It's possible I watch too much slapstick horror.

2
CTDummyreply
piefed.social

What a terrible coinky-dink because the only other story I found was just that (sipping and impaling wise that is).

1
piefed.ca

I don't need to put a pencil in my mouth to use it, but I don't think the risk is very high, either.

American here, just visited another country for the first time last year. I went to Costa Rica and something I noticed was the lack of straws. I went to a McDonalds just to experience how it was in another country and they don't give you a lid or straw unless you ask them. I don't understand why that can't be the norm in America. It just makes too much sense. Now when I go out to eat I make it a point not to use a straw, but the server always drops them off anyway. No chance they take back the unused ones. What a waste.

16
LillyPipreply
lemmy.ca

At the risk of sounding too political, I think people in America are obsessed with purity. Like, everyone is special and nobody wants to be contaminated by others.

I’ve wondered about what you are mentioning myself, and it’s really weird. Most countries don’t do this. Americans are also weird about other things that seem to be about personal isolation. Like they’re afraid to share anything with anyone else. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s strange.

11
lemmy.cafe

Straws are about convenience to keep the kid in (preventing spills) and still being able to drink.

3
LillyPipreply
lemmy.ca

Lips also do that, though. Straws just do it from a distance.

-3

Eh but with lips you have to ensure the lid is a super tight fit or else you get leaks and spills.

1
RandomHugsreply
lemmy.world

OT but that's almost unbelievably comical idea for an American tourist in the wild to actually do. Did you get the feeling that people glanced? Did you notice any other differences (besides the lack of lids/straws)?

3

Going to the McDonalds? I was really just curious if it was very different from an American McDonald's. Aside from the straw thing, and everyone speaking Spanish if was the same lol. Costa Rica is a very different place. I traveled from San Jose (near the center of the country) to Manuel Antonio (southern coast).

Although there are a lot of the same chain restaurants (I even saw a Perkins!), obviously the best food were the local places called sodas. Soda is basically a cafe. One of them didn't have any menus, they just asked what meat I wanted and then they brought out a meal for me. Another one, way outside of the city was run entirely by a family's children. A young girl of about 10 years old sat my table, took our order, and made our margaritas!

The tourism industry is the country's biggest source of revenue so a lot of prices in the city match American prices, but going outside of those cities, things tend to be much cheaper and better quality in my opinion.

The last thing that stood out to me was the driving. I hired a driver to get me around before I even realized how crazy driving was. It was the most aggressive driving I've ever seen. It was expected for everyone to cut each other off and merge into oncoming traffic and just expect everyone else to slow down. Also, that was really the only option. There's no way I could've handled that. No road rage though, everyone just accepted it.

I would love to go back. Anyone interested should visit the country. I was told by the owners of my bed and breakfast to not go out by myself after dark, and of course I would agree that's the safest thing for anyone to do in a foreign country. But I felt very safe where I was and has no issues myself. It got fully dark at about 5 or 6 pm over there so I was never quite ready to turn in at that time (it was the same time zone I lived it). The sun was back up at 5am the next day and the city would come back alive just as soon

I use straws to prevent the drink from touching my teeth. Acidic and sugary drinks especially.

9

That’s a valid reason. Most people don’t have that issue, though.

8

Straight glass straws ftw.

  1. You see inside
  2. Easy to clean. Just throw upright into the dishwasher.

I never understood why someone wants reusable pre-bent glass straws and/or pre-bent/opaque metal straws.

2

I have some stainless steel straws too and I'm more concerned about chipping a tooth than I am about stabbing myself in the eye and dying, but yeah, I agree they definitely have some safety concerns normal plastic straws do not.

3

I never carry them around, i have to be comfortably seated or reclined and i dont hold it for very long ever

3

Still using straws?? Get with the program and get yourself a squirt bottle. No spills. You can dial in your own personal intensity setting and hydrate without ever coming in contact with the nozzle.

The only winning move is not to play. Just drink water, then it doesn’t matter how much you drink or how big your straw is. LPT lemon wedges are no extra charge.

26
lemmy.world

Nah, having good straws makes it much more pleasant and probably better for your teeth if its acidy and carobated

0

I've read that drinking acidic drinks through straws is normally worse for your teeth

1
lemmy.zip

Explain to me why you want a straw in the first place.

When I recieve a drink with one I take it out and throw it away. I certainly have no use for one at home. My water bottle I take with me has a normal drinking sized mouth like a cup.

Why do you use straws at all?

I guess maybe you eat fast food? I don't do that.

5
feddit.dk

Try being disabled or for some other reason not being able to lift a glass of water. Straws are literally a lifesaver.

1

Well yes as a medical device for those in need.

Which makes straws seem even worse for those that dont need them.

They have then out to everyone. It's like saying we all should have a wheelchairs.

Drinking dark soda or coffee without a straw stains your teeth significantly more than drinking through a straw and some of us don't want our teeth to look like kerrygold

2

Water, it’s easier to drink more cold water with a straw water bottle. Also it’s good to drink enough because often I forget

-1
lemmy.zip

Its easier to drink water with a straw? No way it is.

I carry a water bottle with me and no way do I want a straw involved.

4

This post is about nerfing straws because they are TOO effective. Also you don't need to lift anything to drink with a straw. Undoubtedly easier. Like them or not they work

1
sh.itjust.works

I do think it's easier, otherwise it wouldn't be used in hospital? And toddler can drink from a straw, not really a bottle, because.... it's easier?

I do not use straw because it's one more thing to clean, and not the easiest

0

It's easier if you have reduced mobility, are lying down, have underdeveloped motor skills or your drink is half ice.

1

This is the beverage equivalent of asking "how do you do X on Linux?" and the response you get is "you shouldn't want to do X".

Worst. Answer. Ever.

1

It didn't even occur to me that they would be drinking something else and so I didn't know why you would want to slow down your ability to drink even more than a straw already does.

6

I drank no less then 6 cups of water at dinner last night for some reason, and I've been pissing like a race horse every hour on the hour since. You need to worry about it.

4

Thats cool too, altho I'm clumsy enough I would be concerned about straws falling and smashing. I'm dont do well with object impermanence :/

doesn't have to be metal either, we looked into this a few years ago and I opted for silicone straws

it's more plastic but most of the plastic problem is one time use shit

I can "taste" the silicone from time to time but that's also true of metal, silicone can hold onto flavors sometimes but that hasn't bothered me too much

they're just as easy to clean as metal, I like that the ones I got are semi-transparent, they also come in fun colors

they won't accidentally stab you in the mouth or eye or...wherever you might accidentally jam a straw

4
lemmy.world

I dont like their floppiness/insubstantiality tho. Different tastes :) I threw out my silicone ones like right away.

They were also extremely wide compared to the thinner metal ones which was the biggest factor in the exercise

2
lemmy.world

They make silicone toppers for metal straws so you get the strength of the metal with the mouth feel and lower chance of impalation of the silicone.

3

Excellebt idea, my ideal form straws before that inspired me to repurchase these had those sillicon tips
