First lover your username. Second, are you shy? lEt mE sEe dAt cRaNk. You prudish coy! Full frontal wide open cranking it to cranks now. I need to see the componentry. Crown steel fork... aluminum body... Down tube shifters. Index/non index rear with a front that always can adjust for that right spot. No chain dragging on the front derailleur if you want to be a crazy person and cross chain. Holes is the stays for drainage. How are the nipples? Do the still turn? Any hops? Some thing like this really need some commuter style spds. Delta tape nah but planet bike gel is my favorite. I would prefer that saddle to be a little more level cause I would not want my nibblits to go sleepy. Cup and cone hubs are my favorite yet the BB sealed is a good idea. Simply solid yet get that damn lock off that paint job.... or don't. I would of routed the brakes old school cause it is pretty and I like to show off my colored housing but I can tell if those levers are original. Clearly the frame is made for internal routing. Skewers set up properly. Also nice cat. Just throwing this in for those that are curious.

Not to be annoying but get a digital chain stretch tool. Saves a ton of money. Check yo chain mutha frickers.

There are many like it but this one is mine.

You say that, but that's a pretty damn unique bike you got there.

Honest question (I'm a mountain biker, so I don't have a clue) - are your bars rotated down enough?

Also the saddle angle seems nose-high, too?

I adore the way road bikes are so pure - that thing looks like it flies around!

They work for me 🤷

They're the original drops from 1988 so they're shaped different than moder day one's by a pretty large margin.

Personally I find it pretty hard to ride on these hoods because like the bars the hoods are original and have next to no horizontal reach so like compared to my gravel bike where I'm always on the hoods here I'm always riding on the flats or the drops.

Here's a better side angle:

I’m always riding on the flats or the drops

I always did the same on my road bike (a Cannondale Cadd-8, not nearly as antique as your bike here). Last year I gave up and mounted straight handlebars. I like the steering leverage better and if I want to tuck I have aerobars mounted for that.

I love old bikes, but I think the only thing about your bike I wouldn't like is the downtube shifters. I haven't used them since my old Raleigh in the '80s, but I remember struggling with them and having to devote a lot of my attention to them while riding.

2

oh wow, they're original? Damn, you classy!

I hadn't even thought about how much drop bars have changed (although the narrow fascination I totally understand)

The drop / curl looks quite different now I pay attention

good on you, what a rad bike!

I agree the saddle looks too nose-high. With this angle you could risk sliding backwards! And I'd say, at first glance, the handlebars orientation could be fine.

RIP hips...

(It's still a dope restomod though)

Surely OP will adjust the seat angle before using it, that'll cause a strain injury for sure.

2

It's more like the combination of both nose-high saddle and down-rotated handlebar

Wow, thank you all very much! I didn’t expect you guys to be so nice, thank you for all the really kind words! 🥹

Nice! I like the grey with yellow accents. Those old Trek road frames are great, too.

Ayyyyy hot hot hot 💥🧨

E: Your saddle angle might be wrong which could lead to discomfort. The tip seems a bit far up. It should be roughly level.

That was my first thought about the saddle. Even just a degree difference in tilt can make a world of difference in comfort.

What's that flag thing you have hanging beneath your seat? Looks cool

Ha, It's a key chain of a yellow Chinese dragon.

I was watching a you tube video about cycling in NY and this dude hung a little toy off his saddle and I thought that was cool, so when I saw this key chain I though, oh that's the same yellow as the bike I'm building and it very shortly after that ended up where it is 😂

That's awesome. Now i'm going to keep my eyes peeled for something for my bike...

I rode a Shogun 1000 back in the late 80s. To me that, and this, is what a bike should look like. Classic.

It was exactly like this, but blue:

However, the color scheme of this bike is the same as the Shogun 600 that I rode previously. That bike was stolen, which I why I bought the 1000.

Sorry about your stolen bike, im still not over one that was stolen 10 years ago (titanium mongoose with 650 wheels). Bike thieves are the worst!

I bought a Trek 4200 in 2006, basically my first bike (as an adult, anyway). All yellow, and after experiencing my first numb penis episode, I bought this very long, thin, red, split Italian racing bike seat and put it on, so it was a very distinctive-looking bike (it even had tribars which aren't often mounted on mountain bikes). After a ride one day I left it on my front porch and forgot it was there and it was eventually stolen. I didn't even realize it until a week later when I was getting ready for a ride and couldn't find my bike anywhere. I was pissed but I immediately went out and bought the exact same bike in gray (which I still have and it has over 70,000 miles on it).

A few months after it was stolen, I was sitting in my house one day and got the strange urge to go out on my front porch, something I basically never did. While I was standing there, a pickup truck drove down my street, and mounted upright in the back was my original yellow bike, complete with the long red seat. There's no way it was a different yellow Trek 4200 with a long red seat and tribars. I was too surprised to do anything and it drove by and was gone. Probably wasn't the person that stole it, anyway; more likely they bought it from a pawn shop or craigslist. Just a really fucking strange experience.

The 4200 is/was a great bike. Not top of the line by any imagination, but durable and reliable as fuck. I'm glad I still have one of them, at least.

I love the colors, well done. How do you like that saddle?

I love it actually!

It’s a supposedly un ridden fizik aliante test version but it’s super comfortable for me!

(I sharpied it up a little)

6

That's beautiful! A really classy bike while still looking sporty and fun.

Looks so good!

I've got some tyres with the same sort of trim but in white. Love it, but it is an absolute pain to keep clean.

5

interesting. I assume that's not the original rim size (tbh I am not sure when 27" was left behind, only that all the old road bikes like this I've worked on were that size). if so, why find new wheels for it?

how did you find working on a bike like this? myself, I find it refreshing to be able to work on something so simple
