I'm not a big fan of outdoor movies myself, but avoiding the wet butt is just a matter of bringing a picnic blanket (or any number of tricks one can use to avoid your normal blanket getting wet).

Or a pre-wetted butt. What's the worst that could happen then??

I've only ever done drive ins where they have speakers in the standing/sitting area and further out cars use their radios, do the speakers not exist and do they not transmit over radio at these?

Near me is a place where they do movies in a sort of park. Big screen they throw up for it, but its in a no-cars area, so no options for that.

Its wildly popular tho so idk how they actually handle it. Might just be a thing to basically bring kids to, nobody is gunna watch the movie but the kids burn energy and the adults socialize.

Its like a third space event to bring people to the third space? And it works really well. Even Bee Movie had awesome turnout, and that movie is crap.

I've done some outdoor sound setups for events.

I take pride in the fact that no one ever said it was too quiet.

All it takes is a willingness to turn the volume up and professional grade sound equipment.

How do you make sure their butts stay wet or is that the job of a totally different person?

If the volume is high enough there won't be a dry butt in the house

Yeah, I'm an AV tech and I was going to say this is less an issue with outdoor movies and more a matter of people generally not understanding that a) audio quality contributes more to a good watching experience than video, and b) audio is more complicated to get right than video. Not necessarily difficult, it just requires a little more learning. (For example, recognizing the difference between what's actually too loud and what's just not balanced.)

I’m also an AV tech, more on the video side, and I’m fighting the urge to cuss you out. “Audio is more difficult” 🙄

Lol yeah, that's fair. I should add that I was speaking more within the context of a typical outdoor movie night. There's no video routing or switching, hardly any considerations of formats or frame rates. Pretty much just a laptop and a projector, maybe some quick lap through the picture controls if someone really knows and cares that much. I've speced out full multi-site switching rigs with broadcast and IMAG so I know video can get into the weeds just as much as audio. 😅

Also never underestimate the importance of a sound check with as many mobile sound dampeners as possible.

Picnic blankets are plastic table cloths under normal blankets are the cats meow.

We do a few free concerts a summer and have a blanket that folds into a blanket shoulder bag. It’s got a moisture barrier and makes a great place to relax, eat, or doze off the band is boring.

I'd be more impressed if the blanket folded into something other than itself.

Doh, thanks. I corrected it. It folds into a bag that has a small pouch for sunscreen or a book.

Let's not forget the charming mosquitoes and overflowing portapotties.

A wet butt sounds like a specific trauma resurfacing from the author's past.
