Can someone recommend a good instance that has defederated from .ml

I’m tired of supporting instances that support that trash. Are there any suggestions or even a good up-to-date list available?

So you’re fine with tankie psyop propaganda as long as theme memes are good?

4

No, but I'm a grown adult, the content I consume doesn't need to be decided by others.

The instance itself still supports those assholes though. It’s like shopping in a store that supports fascism. I’d rather not give them my business

6

I find them entertaining 🤷 somebody has to keep trying to talk them off the ledge.

Here's a diagram

here's another

https://piefed.social/c/[email protected]/p/2260084/threadiverse-major-defederations-graph

Since those diagrams were made, beehaw.org defederated from lemmy.ml. But they also have lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works defederated so it's... not a popular choice.

PieFed has the concept of silencing another instance. A silenced instance is not defederated from but their posts do not show in the Popular or All feeds and their communities are not shown during onboarding. Their communities can still be found in the communities list (if you unblock the instance first) and joined in the normal way. Once joined, posts in there show up in the Subscribed feed of the joiner as usual.

Since I added silencing functionality I feel like there's almost no need for (more) defederation. I can offer protection to newbies who don't yet know which places to avoid and they can explore the dark corners when they're ready. It's a low-drama way to put a bit of distance between groups that rub each other the wrong way.

Wait the only thing .ml has defederated from is fedinsfw? How random...

7
Warl0k3reply
lemmy.world

If you mean .ml then yeahhhh - there's quite a few good niche communities and plenty of lovely users from there, but the crushing of even minor, polite dissent from the instance mods/admins is starting to become worryingly common. If you mean fedinsfw, it's a smidgen bit too late for that warning lol. But either way thank you!

4
lemmy.dbzer0.com

IMHO, fedinsfw is often a bastion of free speech, though obviously not in its entirety. People are the salient point of failure, often enough.

Warl0k3reply
lemmy.world

Yeah that's been my experience. I've only ever had an issue with two people on there, and those were both just dumbass behavior that was pretty promptly handled. Even had some good discussions about anarchist theory (and in one case it's applicability to the Sonic the Hedgehog universe), which was deeply refreshing.

3
lemmy.dbzer0.com

How ironic that

Makes one think... assuming one hasn't been coaxed into relinquishing that ability to fail in filtering out our oppressors' agitprop, etc.,of course.

7

It's like owning the narrative is half or more of the battle.

One thing I'd not really thought about until recently is the idea that the organisers of the Boston Tea Party really did admire the freedom and other aspects of Native Americans, hence why they disguised themselves as such. And yet on the whole, like most other colonists, considered the NA's to be savages, with the implication that they needed to be managed by the white man. But the overall idea being cultural appropriation... like taking over all the desirable aspects of being NA, while acting abominably towards the actual Native Americans.

But the body of Americans fell hook, line and sinker for the Myth of America, so most of us are kind of oblivious about stuff like this.

Lemmy.world’s is a shithole too, so maybe beehaw is the right choice.

4

I love it here. We've got a relatively small amount of monthly active users, but it's soo worth it. It's like a quality over quantity thing, big time. Most people here really take the whole "be(e) kind" and "try to participate in good faith" stuff seriously. Also, the admins are awesome.

I've got a whole slew of accounts on many different instances, but Beehaw is definitely my fediverse home and the one I use the most by far. <3

And! Our mascot is a lil bee in a cowboy hat. How cute is that??

Anywho, if you decide you wanna give it a shot, we'd love to have ya! Either way, I hope you find one that fits what you're looking for! :)

*Edit: There's something else I thought of that may interest you. There's long been talk of Beehaw moving off of the Lemmy software both because of it's limitations and due to not wanting to support the devs/the lemmy.ml admins. Last I heard, we're just kind of sticking with what we've got until there's something else that'll work better for us and still federate with others, like Sublinks iirc.

Why not just defenders from them entirety? It’s not like they hold any value at all.

3

Literally every Lemmy instance benefits from .ml, it's the dev's instance. No .ml, no Lemmy.

With the silencing and default-block setup piefed.social has now, we get all the benefits of defederation without any of the costs.

There really hasn't been the kind of crisis with them that would bring the issue to a head. When there are problems it's not with the admins, it's with individual accounts. So we just muddle on.

There are worse instances.

We can't divide and fight our way to a fediverse that defeats reddit / meta. We need to build something together. Sometimes that will mean excluding destructive elements but most of our energy needs to go into making something awesome, a place people want to come to instead of big tech offerings.

The problem is, remaining federated with them is supporting them, hidden or not. Silencing them just cuts them off on one side. .ml trolls still see content created on the instance.

I see any instance not willing to completely cut ties with that shithole as supporting it. Even in the smallest way.

And frankly, I don’t understand why anyone would NOT disassociate with them. They have proven themselves to not want anything to do with fair discourse or allow facts into any discussion. This isn’t an opinion, this is very well documented. Not only is there an entire community dedicated to calling them out- but the modlogs are full of those asshole admins banning anyone they disagree with regardless if they violated any of the posted rules.

Who would want to be a part of this?

If you’re not defederated from it entirely; you support it.

6

I don't think federation implies endorsement or support. It's more like "isn't bad enough to cast out forever".

PieFed has more of a spectrum of federation. There are trusted instances, normal instances, silenced instances and defederated instances. So it's not a binary choice.

.ml trolls still see content created on the instance.

Yes that is a bummer. I have made a few attempts to limit federation based on what the poster has blocked but Lemmy is quite good at pulling in content that it previously didn't receive, which works around it. More effort on this is needed.

"Noooo please don't show me dissenting opinions in my echo chamber, I can't handle it"!

Jeez, please grow up, your ontological evil detector is completely out of whack.

1
Warl0k3reply
lemmy.world

.ml is notorious for suppressing any dissenting opinion - both users and admins. You really have no grounds to be acting superior on this issue.

3
OilyArenareply
lemmy.ml

No, it just doesn't accept wack opinions, which is totally fair. World consists of mostly wack opinions, while piefed is created with the purpose of only showing wack opinions.

-1

So when this user doesn't want "wack opinions" on an instance it's bad and an echo chamber, but when .ml doesn't allow "wack opinions" on their instance it's... good and fair and not an echo chamber.

Hmm.

1

Not on Lemmy really, maybe on piefed. That said it may be easiest to pick an instance and just block it from your client.

Based on @[email protected]'s post, it looks like the only large instance that defederates lemmy.ml is infosec.pub . I have no specific knowledge of that instance though.

10

When accounting for several other relatively large instances I didn't include in my original chart, fedia.io and lemmy.cafe also defederate lemmy.ml.

Expanding on @[email protected]'s point, the Piefed instances piefed.social and feddit.online silence lemmy.ml.

10
infosec.pub

Oh sheesh stop acting like a baby. If you don't want to read something then don't read it.

Re infosec.pub: I just logged in and checked, and I can see .ml communities from here.

8

If you don’t want to read something then don’t read it.

this is literally what the OP is trying to achieve.

22

I'm guessing the lemmy.ml communities the other user can see are not receiving new content. After defederation they wouldn't get new content but you'd still see them there locally.

4

I don’t want to support something that allows those assholes.

Do you tell people that don’t want to support companies that support oppressive laws to stop being a baby?

You can fuck all the way off with your bullshit.

7

The newest post on the privacy community on lemmy.ml is 10 months old when viewed on infosec.pub. There are posts from today when you view the same community on any other instance.

Defederation doesn't remove communities, it just stops updating them. The local copy remains viewable and intractable, but it will not send or receive changes to any other instance. The posts you can see are old posts from before they defederated.

Infosec blocks ml. They are defederated. Lemmy has some severe UX issues related to defederation. Blocked communities look plausibly like extant ones even though they're not.

3

If you don't want to read something then don't read it.

Are you opposed to the concept of moderation?

2
feddit.nu

ml is the dev instance. you're supporting it by using lemmy. so really you should look for software that doesn't federate with any lemmy instances.

7
lime!reply
feddit.nu

on an instance that federates with lemmy. also, idk if that's better really.

3
lime!reply
feddit.nu

even with the built-in censors and autoblocks? :/

2
piefed.blahaj.zone

Everyone makes a big deal out of that as if most of it isn't ml stuff like OP is talking about and/or stated upfront on Piefed's website. Mastodon instances have other instances they don't federate with too.

1
lime!reply
feddit.nu

it is now. because people made a stink about it not being there. and even so it's still not detailed. a few of the big things is stuff like ocr-ing every image post to figure out if it's from a chan board, auto-hiding anything tagged with "meme", adding a hidden second layer of "trustworthiness" scoring to every user independent of the score of their posts and comments which pushes them up or down the comment chain, and pushing/pulling those trustworthiness scores from a server periodically.

2

In the past Lemmy also had some hard-coded censorship. One could also say "it got deleted for now"

ocr-ing every image post to figure out if it’s from a chan board

Configurable by admin. Choose an instance that does not do this

auto-hiding anything tagged with “meme”

If I understand correctly what you mean, this is also configurable by instance admins. Choose an instance that does not do this

adding a hidden second layer of “trustworthiness” scoring to every user independent of the score of their posts and comments which pushes them up or down the comment chain, and pushing/pulling those trustworthiness scores from a server periodically

From what I've seen, in general in order to get below the threshold that blocks something one really has to work for it. And I haven't noticed the score affecting where comments are placed. Also, one can choose to have comments sorted by time

As for vote quota - choose an instance that set it impossibly high

In exchange on Piefed there are

  • feeds. Private and shared (with federation)
You can gather all communities you want to be in your private "cats" feed and those will be there, regardless if it makes sense or not. It's feed curated by you. Or you can follow someone's public feed and rely on their curation
  • better notifications. You can turn them on for feeds, people, posts, comments...
  • rolling together comments from posts about the same link
  • I'm fuzzy on the details but some time ago I've heard that the personal blocking works better on Piefed. IIRC once you block an instance/account you won't be seeing it
  • following microblogging accounts
  • adding tags to your posts, so those get visible on microblogging fediverse too

I get that some of Rimu's decisions or reactions might have risen some eyebrows. But I moved to Piefed because of it's features and those have been threadiverse-changers for me

1

Idk about the tag thing. I do know of the chan board thing and I mean fuck those places, I don't particularly mind. The trustworthiness score tho is different, pls do tell.

1
sh.itjust.works

I mean are you paying money for them, when you say supported?

Or you just registered here.

4

By creating content thst can be consumed by those assholes.

.ml is an entire instance full of propaganda spreading pro Russia/China bullshit. There’s a few communities that have documented their bullshit with proof such as MeanwhileOnGrad if you’re interested.

Several instances have defederated (essentially blocked) from them, while others don’t have the balls to.

12
lemmy.world

Ah, that explains why I’ve seen some folks jump way too quickly to accuse other people of being tankies, there’s some community baggage I wasn’t aware of, lol

3
Prataireply
piefed.ca

Yeah. It’s not that they jump too quickly with the accusations, it’s that they either have dealt with the clowns before, or it’s the same modus operandi that they’re used to dealing with.

Many instances have that trash blocked, but sadly- these kids are allowed to to make alts on other instances to where they can spread their bullshit. Some of them even make communities on instances that have their home instance blocked.

2

It’s not that they jump too quickly with the accusations

Nah, I’ve been called a tankie here already, and I’m definitely not. I was just stating an opinion that was further left than the person I was talking to, lol

But broadly speaking, yeah I get what you’re saying

That Russia isn't a fascist state and isn't an imperialist shit hole that aligned itself with the Nazis at the beginning of WW2 in order to accomplish its imperialist goals. Or that it hasn't been the source of atrocities for generations. Or that it's a better alternative than the west.
