All the surveillance of a house arrest without ever having committed a crime in the first place. Fantastic.

[...] OpenAI is developing a screen-less smart speaker engineered by famed Apple designer Jony Ive.

Does anyone actually think that Jony Ive is a good designer? His style has always been very dystopian and soulless to me. I guess that fits with OpenAI's new marketing approach, though.

It’s all to help train their AI LLM system by capturing data on real conversations happening everywhere (probably because they have eaten up all the internet text and books) under the guise of being a personal assistant tied to Amazon to help you be more productive.

The wall screens from fahrenheit 451 or whatever was not an aggressive enough prediction.

I think both F451 and 1984 had tvs that were listening to you and recording you, right?

fahrenheit 451

1984 by George Orwell.

Read the book, and read it to the hurtful ending.
Forget the movie.

I read both in school they just blur together 🙃 the old fahrenheit 451 movie was actually pretty goofy but I'm a super big fan of equilibrium with Christian Bale which is basically just fahrenheit 451. I kinda hated 1984 in comparison and found Julia to be really annoying.

That's an odd way of spelling "poorly-crafted ripoff with pointless gun-fu action scenes crammed into it", but OK.

It's not as much of a cinematic masterpiece as the core, but pobody's nerfect.

F451 had the "Parlour", a room in the house with full sized wall screens that were interactive so you could do things like act in plays with other people in their own house doing the same thing.

Basically, books were made illegal so that the government could control the narrative and change it whenever they wanted with no proof of it ever being changed.

It's a good thing we don't have 24/7 propaganda being shoved at us in reality... 🫪

Wasnt the thing in 451 that the book-bans (and burns) werent started by the government, but the population?

Amazon spent years putting microphones in our homes and apparently decided the real problem was that we occasionally leave the house. Now you can pay $75 plus $12 a month to turn every conversation into a potential shopping reminder. The future of privacy is apparently a subscription you forgot to cancel.

Ugh…. That is profoundly bleak. It’s like the slogan for the future.

Coming soon: Privacy Prime. For $19.99 a month, Amazon agrees not to listen to your conversations. For $29.99, it also agrees not to sell them. The free tier includes personalized ads based on things you whispered in your sleep. Cancellation requires speaking your full name into the microphone.

What idiot is signing up for this shit???

26

The same idiots that fill their homes with active internet-connected microphones.

12

Given who it is selling it, and particularly the whole week advertised battery life, I can't help but think this is going to end up marketed towards employers wanting to monitor their workers 24/7.

Those guys paying musk to use Twitter are pretty dumb, maybe them

10

I mean, I would love an anklet that tracks my biometrics for a week at a time

I'm not putting on one designed by a tech giant, but if I didn't understand the need for privacy I can see the appeal

2

Same ones that carry gps's with microphones and several cameras and other sensors in their pockets all day which are controlled by these very types of corporations. Also the same ones that double down and wear the ones with additional sensors on their wrists.

After having used various smartwatches for the last 15 years, I switched to a cheap basic Casio digital watch six months ago. I thought I needed (and wanted) a smartwatch, turns out I actually didn't at all.

I enjoy my Garmin for health and sports data, but I wouldn't buy a regular smart watch, I don't use its notifications or payments (or whatever else ppl use them for).

I've used Garmin and Coros watches, also for sports and health data, but now that I do it have it anymore I don't actually miss it. Turns out I didn't actually use all that data for anything.

I'm the kind of person who makes spreadsheets about everything, so I have a spreadsheet to see how my running performance changes over time and another one tracking my sleep, stress levels, habits, etc.

Most of this I could see on Garmin's web UI, but I don't assume the company will be around forever, so I'd rather save the data for myself. Now I don't use the data for anything specific, but it's nice to see it confirm the effect my good/bad habits have on my health 😅 Also it gives an extra motivation to get off my ass.

1

Now I don't use the data for anything

This is exactly what I did; I gathered large amounts of data for no actual reason. I also told myself I needed it for motivation because it visualized my effort and progress, but it turns out it actually makes no difference even though I could have sworn it was necessary for me.

We always used to tell the tale of that broken TV set, where your door bell rings right in the next second, and the Am*zon delivery guy already brings a new one.

But now the guy doesn't even need to ring the bell anymore...

So now I can pay to be a target for authoritarian satellite weapons?

we need apps that detect these fucking things

and one day apps that destroy these things!

6

I’d love a device that sends out an EM pulse every 30 seconds.

4

and one day apps that destroy these things!

Call me old-school, but I prefer doing this manually. Literally.

Well, in Europe this could be a condition for rapists to temporarily leave jail. At the end of their sentence.
