I recommend Haven if your focus (!) is self hosting. Just a single container.
Chatto is also quite interesting (especially architecturally), but I dislike event sourcing without ability to technically prune old stuff. Also it’s closer to Slack than Discord.
Trying to get my friends to try Fluxer as well. 🫠 Maybe one day. I'm refusing discord though, so when they play with me they are forced to talk to me using Steam's voice chat.
App looks very similar too. But friends, other devs and communities aren't using it. Their privacy agreements seems to be much better than Discord, especially because their servers are located in Europe. But one should still understand this is not entirely private either. Note, I am not dunking on this service, just want to remember people to read privacy notices:

True story: one weekend I convinced my friends and family to try Matrix instead, and within the first day of using it someone spammed them with CSAM. That was the last of trying Matrix.
This is horrible, but its not like a Matrix only issue. I used Matrix a few times, but stopped because most people aren't there. Never had an issue like CSAM or similar. In example someone got hacked by an exploit in the Linux Kernel. Does that mean everyone should stop using Linux?
Don't get me wrong, I understand your situation. It's also embarrassing and traumatic, especially because you had experienced it yourself. I just meant this in general, that people should not be afraid of trying Matrix, because YOU had these terrible experience.
That was a coordinated attack that happened for a brief period. As a guy who runs his own home server, trust me when I say it was a nightmare for all involved.
That's over, now that there are strong protections in place to prevent those sorts of attacks.
Also, if you're trying to just use something between friends and family you can always turn off federation (E.g. Have matrix act just like the alternatives where you have one network and are only communicating with local accounts).
So glad I don't have to wake up every morning and purge all remote media from the prior evening 😂
Yeah, it's worth remembering that something similar happened on the threadiverse a while back. I think there is now some automated detection and removal enabled for most significant instances.
Matrix, XMPP, and (now) Fluxer all have federation between servers, though they all use different protocols. I know there's a bridge between Matrix and XMPP too
I know of XMPP, but never looked closer. A quick research to find differences and similarities lead to a post / page from Luke Smith. Didn't heard this name for a long time... https://lukesmith.xyz/articles/matrix-vs-xmpp/
What has this anything to do with leaking personal data? This is about the global shortcuts, that can be used while your operating system focus is on another application. This is a long standing issue on Wayland and just recently got solved I think. And Discord being one of the first to make use of this new Wayland "feature" is absurd (in a good way). So I don't understand where you coming from with this statement.
But your link does not address my issue, you are talking about data leaks. But the global shortcuts on Wayland has nothing to do with Discord dataleaks that happened in the past. You are conflicting two different topics here. Click the link I provided (its not a search link, its an actual result) and read through to understand what global shortcuts are.
This has nothing to do with data leaks. Global shortcuts just mean that if you focus on a different application, then you can still control the application in background with shortcuts like Ctrl+1. That's all. This changes nothing about data collection or data leaking.
Deleted my reddit account only to find my comments were still there. So I'm guessing Discord messages will still be there - I wonder what happens to servers with no admin.
They just stay up, but nobody has access to the controls anymore, the admin account shows as "Deleted User". I know this, because the server my late friend hosted, is still up, even though their account got nuked couple years back.
I don't want to leave "my" server in an unalterable state but at the same time I don't want to encourage Discord use though my action (assuming I ever log in again, need to say how to contact me or say bye).
It wasn't finished and final about one or two months before. They were discussing the global shortcuts portal for about 10 years, with different portals and revisions, and they just couldn't agree on. Now its official and final recommendation. Some desktop environments used some draft versions, and everyone did it in a slightly different way, so that it wasn't a real standard yet. And many other window managers or desktop environments didn't even attempt it. Therefore many tools didn't use the half baked portal and chaos everywhere.
They were discussing the global shortcuts portal for about 10 years, with different portals and revisions, and they just couldn't agree on
That's just complete made up nonsense.
Some desktop environments used some draft versions, and everyone did it in a slightly different way, so that it wasn't a real standard yet.
That's not how anything works. An API getting further refinements and improvements - almost exclusively in documentation - doesn't make it "not final" or "not a real standard".
And many other window managers or desktop environments didn't even attempt it
Some niche WMs not suppporting an API doesn't matter to most app developers.
It had been working for me until it somehow didn't. Not quite sure why. I did had to setup KDE to allow global shortcuts for Discord but that no longer seems to be working for me.
Maybe it previously only kind of worked depending on setup? I remember I had trouble and I think I remember implementing a "fix" but at some point it stopped working for me.
From what I understand, what they're doing now will work on all systems.
No idea, I just don't wanna touch the unmodified version cause it's got so much spyware and unwanted features, which vesktop let's me turn some of those off
This will mute all applications. While a workaround for your setup, on other use cases it wouldn't work if the user wants to mute a specific application only.
Wow and to think I could have gone without knowing that and that it would have had absolutely no impact on my life whatsoever. Crazy. Makes you think. About burritos or something. Certainly not about Discord on Linux though.
When I need to check something on Discord I do it with a browser anyway, I tried installing it on linux but every time I would run it I would get a demand to manually install a new binary because there was an update, and I don't want it having that level of access to my computer anyway.
Wow. Amazing! I use it in a browser when I need it then close the tab when I don't, you know, like a reasonable person? I am not installing more Chromium to not only spy on me but literally also tell everyone what I am doing unless I go out of my way to opt out (the toggle will just turn back on whenever it feels like it).
I bet they did some dumb shit like subscribe every single QWERTY 101 key.
It does for my setup. I'm on a not too crazy install of Arch with KDE for my DE and I have discord installed with flatpak. It's been at least 3 months with no issues for me.
I feel like it's been working for almost 2 years at this point for me. The only issue I have is it shares all audio instead of just the application I'm sharing.
Stop using Discord. If you're choosing Discord over a good Matrix client like Sable because of minor frictions, your choosing your own convenience over the lives of other people.
Making the change is isn't some huge lifestyle transition. It's just using a decentralised method to achieve the exact same thing.
I can't imagine the venn diagram of people who still use discord and people who game on linux has that much of an overlap does it? Like cmon it's got to be the worst possible of all the options. You'd be more secure sending a plaintext email to someone.
Most of my friends discord is my only way of communication lol
I also organize tournaments for a small community sometimes and I'm not getting all those people to install something else that does the same job but probably worse.
This works only if you do not have many internet friends. I also really don't have an issue with discord usability wise and their ultimate implementation of age verification is practical even if I disagree with doing it at all (but it seems to be politically popular sadly).
How is refusing to install spyware on my computer being an asshole? You must be young. You'll get to an age where you realize having principles and sticking to them makes life a lot more bearable than being a pushover.
Dog whatever. This is pretentious as fuck. I'm 34 years old so not exactly young but I have dozens of IRL friends in a few different parts of the country that the only way I keep in touch with them is via one discord server. I'm not about to just abandon friendships over a line in the sand like this. It's not as easy as people make it out to be to just get them all to switch to matrix. There's also a lot of "friends of friends" in there so it'd be extra cumbersome to get people to switch. And plenty of them are not exactly technical inclined about using computers, etc.
I just looked and there's 86 members in the discord. The channels we have are vidya games, music, TV & anime, IRL happenings, fishing, creative endeavors & self released music, news around the world, specs / PC tech posting, food, sports, I think you see where I'm goin with this. It's very active, and a 86 member group chat sounds absolutely miserable. I have discord notifications turned off, I log in every once in a while as I don't even have social media any more.
If someone likes anime and doesn't like sports, they can tune out of those conversations all together v easily by muting a channel
Like it or not discord fulfills a niche that goes beyond texting or social media, which I think fills the role a million times worse as it's just posting updates for some likes and random ass comments compared to conversations
I couldn't even name a alternative solution besides teamspeak 😅
And team speak was dead for years, no idea how their reboot is currently doing.
But even if there are better and free solutions, people use what's convenient to them. There is zero reason for the billion WhatsApp users to not switch to signal, still most of them never even think about switching.
Most gaming communities are on Discord. I game on Linux, and we don't use Discord in my friend group, but I am still in tens Discord servers. I don't get to choose where these communities are. There are even several non-gaming-relating communities I am part of that primarily exist on Discord.
I'm not sure why I'd be installing actual Discord on Linux; I'm sure there should be an open-source fork somewhere that's less resource-hungry and less intrusive to the system... Just saying.
We didn't lost shortcuts to everything. It's only about global shortcuts, all other still work. And given the Wayland global shortcuts are now functional and officially supported, its not the same situation anymore. The difference to iPhones is, that you cannot do anything about it on iPhone. On Wayland however desktops environments such as KDE, GNOME and Hyperland could implement a custom variant (or the draft version of the portal) and have it functional; it was just not a standard.
So no, the situation is not entirely comparable. We are not at mercy by one single company.
You know that the Wayland portal for global shortcuts took 10 years discussions before they finally settled in, right? Off course it is to blame the Wayland devs (those responsible for this portal), not Discord.

"Not sure how you weren’t able to think this for yourself?"
I just reorganized some bookmarks and thought about how can I unite Lemmy and Imgur in one group; Social. I have no idea how this could be categorized other than being social media. Any ideas welcome.

I'd recommend Stoat because they won't rape you for all the personal data they can.
I'd recommend Fluxer over Stoat. Seems to be gaining more users and traction in a fraction of Stoat's time.
I recommend Haven if your focus (!) is self hosting. Just a single container.

An alternative could also be Matrix, which at least is decentralized: https://matrix.org/

Precisely, Stoat or fluxer
I'm so looking forward to Fluxer being a good self-hosted alternative to Discord. It seems to be getting closer every day.
Waiting for a pure Docker release where I can just pull, throw in Tailscale and be done.
then where’s stoat.sdf.org? 🤣
The lights are barely kept on for our Lemmy instance, I don't expect a Stoat server anytime soon...
Then maybe they should take a massive bankloan🤣😂
discord and twitter...
If they enjoy discord, they are likely okay with Twitter. At best you would see Discord on Bluesky.
bluesky aka blue twitter
pizza and pineapple
Delicious.
Also chicken pizza with curry and banana. 😋
Can't wait to see how this will result in another massive leak of personal data that they totally don't retain.
What has this anything to do with leaking personal data? This is about the global shortcuts, that can be used while your operating system focus is on another application. This is a long standing issue on Wayland and just recently got solved I think. And Discord being one of the first to make use of this new Wayland "feature" is absurd (in a good way). https://noai.duckduckgo.com/?q=discord+data+leak
What exactly do you want tell me with that? I should search for data leaks through a search engine? This does not address my point whatsoever. We are talking about global shortcuts protocol from Wayland here, has nothing to do with data leaks: https://flatpak.github.io/xdg-desktop-portal/docs/doc-org.freedesktop.portal.GlobalShortcuts.html
"What exactly do you want tell me with that? I should" click on those links?
I'm guessing their point was to do with the 1st word in the title of the thread.
I'm not qualified to address your issue.

I haven't used discord for a couple of years. got an email yesterday informing me that unless I log in soon, my account will be deleted.
...oh no
I'm going to let them delete it, saves me having to
Why do something yourself when someone is more than willing to do it for you!
There's no way these companies actually delete anything, ever. You can probably still get myspace pictures, and that company was before Facebook.
They keep your messages around if you account gets deleted. You have to use an alternative tool to delete them
Deleted my reddit account only to find my comments were still there. So I'm guessing Discord messages will still be there - I wonder what happens to servers with no admin.
They just stay up, but nobody has access to the controls anymore, the admin account shows as "Deleted User". I know this, because the server my late friend hosted, is still up, even though their account got nuked couple years back.

That only took a decade to get done. Good job!
To be fair, it wasn't the fault of Discord this time. The Wayland developers took their time, because they couldn't agree (until now).
The global shortcuts portal is four years old.
It wasn't finished and final about one or two months before. They were discussing the global shortcuts portal for about 10 years, with different portals and revisions, and they just couldn't agree on. Now its official and final recommendation. Still please don't use it to host your source code. Or to communicate critical info.
Beat I can do is mod repo. For many mod creators.
God I hate it so much, you can't find shit in these ones...
Wouldn't want that malware on my machine. So sick of every online community default to the shithole that is Discord.
I'm so confused. I am on KDE Wayland and have been using push to talk for like a year now. What even is this?
The ability to use push to talk while Discord is not the focused window.
I know, it's been working
It had been working for me until it somehow didn't. Not quite sure why. I did had to setup KDE to allow global shortcuts for Discord but that no longer seems to be working for me.
Through an x.org passthrough hack, now it works without opening up the ability to be keylogged by the client.
Maybe it previously only kind of worked depending on setup? I remember I had trouble and I think I remember implementing a "fix" but at some point it stopped working for me.
From what I understand, what they're doing now will work on all systems.
Wow, I can't wait to never install it
Goddamnit, what bullshit are they doing now?!?!
Oh... Well we got good news for once
I'd rather stick with vesktop thanks
Does PTT work on vesktop? Because I cannot make it work there
No idea, I just don't wanna touch the unmodified version cause it's got so much spyware and unwanted features, which vesktop let's me turn some of those off
too little, too late
Meh, I already have a global mute shortcut. I have a keyboard shortcut for this script I found somewhere that toggles mic audio capture in ALSA.
#!/bin/bashmic_on=$(amixer get Capture | grep '\[on\]')if [ "$mic_on" = "" ] ; thenamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-added.ogaelseamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-removed.ogafiThis will mute all applications. It used to do that for one of my devices, but it has since stopped, no idea what to say to the access though.
FINALLY
AT LAST
Wow.
Vesktop
Still a browser. Abaddon is nice but no feature parity (especially compared to browser + equicord, I am using like 1 plugin from there rn).
does screen share work on Wayland yet?
It does for my setup. I'm on a not too crazy install of Arch with KDE for my DE and I have discord installed with flatpak. It's been at least 3 months with no issues for me.
I feel like it's been working for almost 2 years at this point for me. The only issue I have is it shares all audio instead of just the application I'm sharing.
I'll do some digging, it doesn't work on my Ubuntu Wayland as of last week
Just one year? It's been working much longer for me.
How do you even release a voice chat app without push-to-talk capability?
TIL Discord has voice chat
Been waiting for this for a long time.
Stop using Discord. If you're choosing Discord over a good Matrix client like Sable because of minor frictions, your choosing your own convenience over the lives of other people.

The thing is that everyone else is on discord. So you dont have a choice
I mean you do. I don't use it. If someone wants to use it I say I don't have it and make them use something else.
Good for you, but you see, other people are what's known as "not an asshole"
How is refusing to install spyware on my computer being an asshole? You must be young. You'll get to an age where you realize having principles and sticking to them makes life a lot more bearable than being a pushover.

Discord is unfortunately still wildly popular, even amongst Linux users
The overlap in the venn diagram is far from a circle, but it's bigger than you'd think
I'm one of them lol. Hate discord but there is no choice if i wanna play with friends.
Are these friends who you know well? If so why can your entire friend group not move to a different solution together? Do they refuse to?
I couldn't even name a alternative solution besides teamspeak 😅 And team speak was dead for years, no idea how their reboot is currently doing. But even if there are better and free solutions, people use what's convenient to them. There is zero reason for the billion WhatsApp users to not switch to signal, still most of them never even think about switching.

"people who still use Discord" is virtually everyone in my experience
Maybe among gamers? I don't think it's all that ubiquitous outside of that.
Even buisnesses use it as alternative to Teams lol
I am quite curious what the mechanism for that will be
XDG Global shortcuts portal? Has existed and been supported by plasma and gnome for a while https://flatpak.github.io/xdg-desktop-portal/docs/doc-org.freedesktop.portal.GlobalShortcuts.html
Hyperland also did that if I'm right. They supported an alpha version of the global shortcuts. Nobody knew if this is the final form or not. Global shortcuts are official since 1 month or so, see https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/issues/2142 and https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/525
I'm not sure why I'd be installing actual Discord on Linux; I'm sure there should be an open-source fork somewhere that's less resource-hungry and less intrusive to the system... Just saying.
"fork" implies there's code to fork
Nobody wants to use it, but if all your friends use it and you want to talk to them, you kinda have to
I moved my community to stoat. Early development so it's quite jank as fuck, but so was discord when it was new.
Stoat has had plenty of time to fix those bugs but rather would focus on nonsense that nobody needs
Oh my god. Push to talk.
:o
Holy fuck.
Linux didn't have the most basic voice chat function up to now???? :O
They STILL don't???
What the actual
Checks original release date for ventrilo
It was an issue with Wayland. Before that we had X11, where global shortcuts wasn't an issue.
They were an issue because it was the wild West and any app could keylog any other app and respond to anything. Now we actually have UX around this.
Apple phones used to have headphone jacks, removable batteries, and expandable memory.
How is this relevant to our discussion?
They lost everything, you lost the shortcuts to everything
We didn't lost shortcuts to everything. It's only about global shortcuts, all other still work. And given the Wayland global shortcuts are now functional and officially supported, its not the same situation anymore. The difference to iPhones is, that you cannot do anything about it on iPhone. Ahhh, blame it on Wayland. I see how it is.
You know that the Wayland portal for global shortcuts took 10 years discussions before they finally settled in, right? Off course it is to blame the Wayland devs (those responsible for this portal), not Discord.
Portals are dbus actually. a different IPC mechanism.
HOLY FUCK

Some of the tracking. They still store your messages you send in plain text and who knows what they do with that!
Uhh they still store all your images photos and voice. And likely use your voice for ai training.
Why not just open a web browser tab and go to Discord webpage?
damn. Gonna stick to slidcord until it gets fixed.
Sometimes there isn't a choice because others you're in contact with prefer discord.
Not sure how you weren't able to think this for yourself?
If you don't support their choice to use discord, perhaps they will leave discord and go to something better. The same applies to twitter, instagram, facebook etc
"Not sure how you weren’t able to think this for yourself?"
Be the change
They will just not follow you to whichever app with 5 users you move to tbh
Then they should be left behind, it's not like there is a shortage of humans on the planet.
You are not a very serious person
I'm very serious about not being apathetic, and/or a conformist.
Some people lead
