Trump announces partial ceasefire in Ukraine war as Zelenskyy says deal is ‘news to me’

Ukrainian president earlier rejected US call for Kyiv to stop bombing oil refineries, saying Moscow must first end attacks on energy infrastructure

Donald Trump has announced an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, apparently without consulting Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said the deal to stop long-range attacks was “news to me”.

In a social media post, the US president claimed the two sides had reached an agreement. “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” he wrote on Truth Social.

He offered no further details. Zelenskyy said he was surprised by the announcement but would agree to it if Vladimir Putin did the same. “If President Trump negotiated it with Putin – please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and we will accept it,” the Ukrainian president told the Axios website.

Zelenskyy shouldn't offer to accept a Trump-brokered deal so readily given that Trump has no incentive to negotiate with Ukraine's best interests in mind.

It won’t matter, Putin won’t accept it anyways. This has happened many times before. Zelenskyy knows how to deal with Trump.

He thinks he's rich and can just "grab 'em". He sees "dear leader" in the mirror. He's just a kindergarten teacher receiving every gold star, bragging about acing the tests he writes and grades himself.

No, this is a good play. It's all bullshit anyway, but it buys Zelenskyy some goodwill if he plays along. It also makes Trump look stupid when he doesn't follow up. There's literally no downsides. The only downside would be if it's real and Putin actually follows it. Neither of these would happen though.

Not sure how this would be a downside, Ukraine would be happy to get an energy ceasefire going into the cold months

11

Fair. Maybe it wouldn't be. Strategically, I think it'd be a negative for them though. They've had much more luck striking energy targets than Russia has. I can see the argument for it being a win no matter what too though.

4

It also makes it clear that Zelenskyy isn't being suckered by Trump.

2

It would help Ukraine if it were real. And it would damage Ukraine to refuse outright. So a conditional acceptance is the least bad choice. But I'm sure Zelenskyy knew that Putin would keep bombing, since that's what he's going to do until his owners decide he's no longer useful.

Plot twist, Zelensky agreed it to Trump privately, but refuses to admit it publicly, knowing nobody will believe Trump

Zelensky is in a desperate position :(

-20

not really? He knows Putin won't follow it. He knows he can say "sure thing" knowing Putin wont' follow it to appease trumps bullying sense of power and finally, he has the upper hand with deep strikes on energy infra in Russia right now which he isn't going to have to stop because Putin won't. So really this is just useless posturing by Trump and he knows it.

Edit: FWIW, Putin bombed Ukraine's energy infrastructure within 24 hours of Trumps little "deal."

Nah, he's just calling trump's bluff. He knows Russia will never honor it.

He's definitely smarter than Trump.

Ukrane can stockpile long range weapons for future strikes. They can also pivot and target other logistics

sh.itjust.works

He really did negotiate something with one party being completely uninvolved, didn't he?

70

Probably talked to grok and it hallucinated this ceasefire

3

He negotiated it in his head, and is probably surprised that his thinking doesn't equal reality.
The man is completely delusional, he actually thinks he can make things real with his will!
When he claims "only I can fix that", he actually believes it. Because he believes he is the only one with a mind strong enough to will it to happen.

This is a common phenomenon among for instance the very rich and highly positioned CEO's and wall street traders, although generally to a smaller degree, like thinking they can influence how dice fall.
It is also common within religion, like thinking praying actually works, which again turns to things like prosperity gospel, something Trump apparently also believes is true.
And finally it is also something that tend to happen to narcissists.

Trump is all these things, and has been delusional about having "powers" for decades, and his progressing dementia is making it worse.

It's the same mechanism that made Steve Jobs declined to have his cancer treated when it was discovered early enough to have a very high chance of success. He thought he could get rid of it himself somehow. When he finally realized he couldn't, it was too late.

Almost certainly not. This is to shift attention from Iran for gas prices increasing I suspect. He's going to say the reason prices have gone up is because Ukraine is bombing Russian refineries (it has technically had an effect), not because of his invasion of Iran. He's going to say he signed a deal with Russia, but prices aren't decreasing quickly because Ukraine broke the ceasefire that he made up.

Assuming I'm right, it's actually a smart move. It only needs to be made because of a bunch of really dumb moves, but this would be smart. Most people, let alone most Americans, don't have a firm grasp on any of this, so the truth doesn't really have much power.

6

Trump's in a pickle because he is helping Putin keep the oil price high while also promising low gas prices to Americans. So Trump has to constantly flap his jaw about deals without actually delivering anything.

Please continue to bomb russian oil and seize/sink their tankers. I'll gladly pay increased fuel prices on my end.

40

Genuinely hoping the diesel exports from Russia, if they are even real, are targeted. I don’t want 300,000 gallons or whatever of diesel spilled from an environment perspective, but man would I be in favor of the pain pushing people to vote appropriately.

2

Trying times for a putin's useful idiot, eh? Be tough and keep on kneeling, good serf

1

If you want Ukraine to stop bombing Russia there's actually a really easy fix that they could implement tomorrow.

Have Russia end their invasion.

34

This is so that he can say Ukraine broke the ceasefire when Russia doesn’t observe the fake ceasefire and Ukraine keeps hitting Russian energy targets.

Trump is a Russian asset.

Trumps lies aren’t worth reporting besides to say he’s lying again

25

But then how will insiders trade stock for a massive profit if the news doesn't report what they're fed?

No, the “according” person is not the receiver.

The preposition "to" makes its target a direct object. So it's "whom" unless you are of the view that "whom" is obsolete.

2

Dude is so sick in the head. Not a single serious person in the world is giving Trump an ounce of their mind. He's a powerless buffoon.

the world, both good and bad sides of it, already knows that every word from trumps mouth is a lie so it behooves us all to watch his actions and go by them rather than what he says

Seems like a setup to make Ukraine look like the "bad guys" here.

Everyone "talking" peace but NOTHING changed.

America better go in there and "teach" Ukraine a lesson.

Any fair and accurate reporting going on?

9

Maybe, but I bet it's more that he's shitting himself over high fuel prices, caused by his illegal war with Iran, and has deluded himself in believing he can market manipulate his way out of Republicans getting destroyed in the midterms.

But unlike the stock market, oil supplies and wars don't magically respond anytime the moron in chief word vomits on the internet.

Ooh you silver tongued wordsmiths amaze me sometimes. Thanks for being you.

1

Considering that Putin thought he could just steamroll over Ukraine and 4 years later, Ukraine is still going, that doesn’t surprise me

It's like partial murder.

You didn't kill the person. Bleeding out after you severed their legs did.

5

It sounds like the idea was that there would be no attacks on energy infrastructure in particular, so not "partial" in the sense of quantity but rather in targets.

1

That putz just says whatever the fuck his geriatricly addled mush of a brain can think of regardless of reality checking his ass like a shopping list.

Just rapist doing rapist things. His next statement will be that Ukraine doesn't want peace.

5

Haven’t looked it up, but I recall trump saying something along these lines in recent times?
