On the 3rd anniversary of October 7 attacks, Mamdani draws ire as he accuses Israel of genocide and war crimes

New York — New York’s mayor marked the third anniversary of Hamas’ October 7 attacks on Israel on Wednesday with a statement that has sparked backlash among some Jewish leaders.
In his statement, Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledged the “horrific war crimes of October 7” while also accusing Israel of committing war crimes and genocide in Gaza.

The mayor was met with boos as he arrived at a vigil in remembrance of October 7 on Wednesday night in Union Square, video from CNN affiliate WABC showed. He is set to attend a meeting with Palestinian New Yorkers following the vigil, according to his public schedule.

“This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss,” Mamdani wrote in his statement.

Accuses? Just look at Israeli social media, they post videos of the crimes.

The news is reporting as accused and will do so until some tribunal adjudicates that a genocide occurs. Until then it is libel.

Libel? Then I would love to see the discovery phase for this. You can literally see that it is a genocide from outer space. Go ahead and sign me up for that lawsuit ya spineless chicken shits.

Yes but it has to be an official finding before the media can report it as such. Until then, it’s an allegation.

There are ethical standards. They will get sued, no possibility of it not happening. You advocate for that?

-7

Yes, I advocate for having higher ethical standards even if it means a genocidal regime sues you. Hearing someone make excuses for pedophiles and genociders as an appeal to ethical standards is pathetic.

Ethical standards for thee but not for me, said the administration. tRump himself personally slanders and libels private citizens regularly, and pretty well anybody he doesn't like without hesitation or account. At a certain point the standards are being weaponized, just like their politics has done with civility. I think if they took a principaled stand and got sued, they could win, and I do support that actually. Will that happen? No.

9

This has nothing to do with trump. These standards have existed for a century.

-9

Facts is a defense, you don't need to wait for it

Besides, you already have those official findings by multiple international organizations

Did you know that Zionist has been used as a slur for longer than either Palestine or Israel was a state? Now you do.

-40
Akasazhreply
lemmy.world

Is it really a slur of the people it's about chose the term themselves?

It's become a dirty word because of their actions, but it was their own moniker. The lovers of Zion.

23

Yes. Black people in America use the N word for themselves. But it is still clearly a slur. i cannot believe you asked that question in good faith.

-20

You believe the n-word is a slur that black people chose for themselves? Because reclamation and choosing a label for yourself are two incredibly different things.

So what are we supposed to call the political ideology championed by Theodor Herzl? I wonder if he had anything to say about this himself. Anyway

14

It wasn't a slur 150 years ago. it's become a slur now.

1
Akasazhreply

You say 'still use' because originally it was derogatory, in the case of Zionists is themselves who originated the term, which they saw as positives.

My point, which you choose to ignore, is that they themselves turned itinto a slur by their behaviour.

Your dad has pet names for your mom. If a stranger uses those pet names for your mom, your dad will be justifiably angry.

-4

It's not an analogy it's a demonstration of my point. Groups can use language internally that is offensive when used externally.

-4
lemmy.ml

I mean you didn't call it the Z word so I think you already know it's not remotely the same.

4

the only difference is the number of people affected and the length of time that the words have been commonly used.

Literally don't care. They're supremacists.

People who have very German names have been called Nazis both as a joke and as an insult. Doesn't change anything. It's your actions. If you're being an asshole and not a Nazi and someone calls you a Nazi, it means nothing it's just like being called an asshole.

Zionists are antisemitic. Palestinians are a semitic people. Zionists are bigots and racial supremacists. Disgusting people.

kestrel7_7reply

So. The term anti-semitism was made up by anti-Jewish racist Germans in the 19th century. It was supposed to be a more “scientific-sounding” alternative to the older term, Judenhass (lit. “Jew-hatred”) that would be more palatable to the gentile German people. At the time (1870’s or so) few people in Europe were too much concerned with what was actually going on with Palestinians or Arabs in general.

This is why you see a lot of pro-Israel folks still use “anti-semitism” as shorthand for “anti-Jewish racism” today. The term, read literally, initially seems to include racism against all “Semitic” people as well (which is… what exactly? I truly don’t know, is it every ethnic group who speaks a Semitic language?). But the very term “anti-semitism” is just itself an old dog whistle for “jew-hatred” that is now becoming a cudgel that pro-Israeli folks use to bully folks into ignoring Israeli war crimes. Anyway

7

Yes but the word literally has an actual definition now that means the complete opposite of literally. Words and their definitions only hold so much water before people can just decide what they actually mean.

So I refuse to let zionists own the term and believe it should be used to point out their hypocrisy. Zionists are antisemitic, I'd argue they're the most antisemitic group.

Also the whole concept of ethnic groups is unserious it's made up grouping that I guess can be used to help specify what someone is talking about but overall it's a group of languages and as far as I know the only ethnic group that derives their identity in this way which is extremely odd, to me at least.

nazi as a name has never been used as a tool of oppression of a minority group. Zionist has. Isreal is currently committing a genocide. Zionist is a word that has been used to besmirch, denigrate and 'other' Jewish people for over a century. If you want to critique the actions of Netenyahu's government please do loudly and often. But you don't have to do it with a slur.

-16
deftreply
lemmy.wtf

But it has and currently is. In Russia the lie about denazification has been the justification for invading Ukraine. It's also been used to delegitimize protests specifically in Hong Kong in 2019 where people were told the protesters were fascists, nazis and radicals.

On top of that Zionism and Zionist is not a slur. People identify as zionist. That's why the comparison to Nazi is perfectly apt both are ideologies people openly embrace.

In the same light Nazi can be slung as an insult so can Zionist but that doesn't make it a slur it is a legitimate neutral political term just like Nazi.

9

I’m sure you also raise this criticism all the time when people are posting pro-Israel stuff.

5
lemmy.ml

Are you stupid? You think this is a joke, lmao? The faster the Israeli and American experiments fail, the faster we can all fucking move on with our lives and heal from the many many many genocides.

4

What in the possible fuck are you talking about? I'm talking about the country, not your friend named Israel.

3

It's called having a backbone. For all of the whining and bitching from people about how politicians are bought and have no backbone, observe what that actually looks like and kindly eat shit if you don't like it.

34

Israel hasn't killed that many Hamas in retaliation but they have killed 1000x more Palestinians after October 7 and even long before then and there's plenty of video evidence to support his statement and a lot of it is self incriminating.

26

If you look at the age distribution of Palestinians that died since then, it is pretty similar to the demographic which is what you would get if you indiscriminately bombed a country.

5

The man who beats kittens daily is outraged that people accused him to be an animal abuser on the 3rd anniversary of the time a cat scratched him.

Alternate headline: On the 3rd anniversary of October 7 attacks, Mamdani commended as he accuses Israel of genocide and war crimes

18

Where are all those people who were trying to shit talk about him because he didn't say genocide enthusiastically enough in an interview once before. You can call terrorists terrorists and genocide genocide without any contradictions.

16

Well shit maybe they shouldn't have done it then, if they're so upset about being called out.

7

It's so funny to be posting real political news with a username like that

6

What were those assoles doing at an October 7rh vigil? Man, going to an event just to be an asshole to those holding the event is next level petty degenerate.

Sure, Israel has committed war crimes and genocide per Geneva and UN definitions. So has HAMAS, Iran, Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, et al.

2

Saudi Arabia, sure. It's a popular pass time for America and it's allies. Iran? Tell me more.

Even Iran admits they commit genocide.

Who has Iran admitted to genociding? Why do you just make up shit like this without evidence while pretending you’ve read anything “serious”? No one’s fooled by your midwittery.

Exactly, almost every country in the list is guilty of genocide. I don't know much about Hezbollah, but only someone born yesterday would think Iran is innocent. Like hell literally few months ago Iran was massacring it's own citizens, and that news somehow flew off his radar? Also has this guy never heard of Saddam Hussain?

-5

Their own citizens who the mossad admitted were mossad agents on the ground, lol? What kind of radar do you have where you missed that one?

5

almost every country in the list is guilty of genocide.

If you don’t even know what the term “genocide” means, then don’t vomit up nonsense about it.

2

The usa is killing citizens too and kidnap people based on the skin color then send many to other autocratic countries like el salvador where they are tortured and also killed .

Which reputable human right and international law organization prove iran is comiting a genocide?

Don't be ridiculous, you really don't have a clue.

Read the UN definition of genocide (note: that's why I said "UN definition". It was a clue for you). They've all committed genocide with regularity for your entire lifetime.

You are wrong, inject another speedball, friend.

https://www.un.org/en/genocide-prevention/definition

Hundreds of thousands in Syria are dead, 10x the losses of Israel vs. Palestine (at the least). You're oblivious

-6

The intent do destroy a group was never shown by Bashar. He was just a dictator that was ok with ton of people dying to stay in power.

1

HAMAS, Iran, Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, et al did war crimes but none did genocides. No genocide expert said they did genocides.
