If this survey is any indication, Audacity wants to add generative AI because of course they do

I was invited to partake upon opening the software. I thought Lemmy might get a kick out of this.

I answered this question with Other: You should be ashamed for even asking this question.
I've been using Tenacity for a while now. Audacity has become problematic. But honestly, I don't do too much audio editing. Just some clipping and noise removal.
I was just about to ask. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the recommendation. I have used Audacity for over a decade now.
Seems like an indication they wanna know what the users want to do but it'd be nice to be able to say "yes" to the non generative uses only
The company developing audacity have done similar surveys for other software. No matter the result, they always add some version of it. I love the main UX designer's philosophy, he hasto done miracles with other stale products. But the company is squarely pro-AI oriented.
I can't believe they have the audacity to do this. The audacity!
I abandoned the software after it got bought out and installed spyware years ago. There is a fork called Tenacity I use sometimes.
Ding!
That survey sounds more like they're thinking about asking an MCP API to it. That is, an AI assistant could be connected to send calls to perform tasks through Audacity without needing OpenClaw-like full computer access.
One use case I can imagine is, an indie game developer has a recording they want to use but it's noisy and they're bad at sound editing so they ask an AI to do something about it. The AI sees an exposed Audacity MCP server and goes to town.
I guess it could work?
Yeah, implementing an API to enable control over software functions for AI agents is not a big bad evil guy move.
Could, yeah, but never should. Hope that hypothetical indie game developer gets banned from stores.
I could see that argument for using AI to generate content, but cleaning human-generated content? Once you go down that road you call into question a lot of common tools in creative software.
gasp
The audacity....
Couldn't help myself, apologies
Isn't Audacity FOSS? I might be assuming 100% here...
And there is already a fork called Tenacity after the controversy around telemetry back in 2021. I could imagine they would also be unlikely to implement any changes involving AI
We need to boost the signal on Tenacity over Audacity in all the various spaces.
My only problem with Tenacity is that it's outdated and doesn't have the new effects (compressor and limiter) that I use regularly.
I heard about Tenacity, but while it says it supports macOS, it doesn't actually run. If they get that sorted, I'll switch us. My wife uses Audacity more than I do, and she hates AI.
I don't mind AI for some things, but it has no place in the arts.
Yeah but it was bought by a shitty company a while back that immediately added telemetry to it.
Yes, GPLv3.
Introducing Audacity Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers!
I don't see the problem. There are many ways that it could be useful, particularly with editing files.
It’s an art thing. No machines generating in place of humans a key ethic.
Automating menial labor can still be good. Doesn't mean you will be more productive though since menial labor can give you breaks and time to think and familiarize. But we shouldn't put menial labor on a pedestal or make it morally desirable.
"Hey Alexa please lower the volume of this file because I'm too retarded to use the basic functions of this app"
Whats next? AI integration into MS paint because people are too stupid to draw a rectangle?
I have bad news for you...
Same here. If they add an MCP interface, that could potentiallly enable interoperability with whatever the hell you want. Maybe a web interface or a CLI.
Edit: to be clear, you can speak MCP without being an LLM. I think MCP integrations are one of the best things to come out of the LLM craze.
