I'm digging it. I don't start getting woken up by by sunlight at 4am unlike the height of summer. Being in coastal northeastern Japan, I really think we need to move the time zone by an hour or two so the sun comes up closer to 5 or 6 in summer.

I do lament our lack of summer this year. We had the rainiest weather on record in many parts of Japan. Days and weeks without a rainless day.

This is my go to argument when people say daylight saving is a pain. When I first came to Japan and left a late night bar at 3 to find the sky getting first light I was dismayed. 430 sunrise is far too early.

I think they must have accidentally delivered your summer to the wrong address, Europe. We had temperature records and rivers have been at record lows for months

It has redeeming qualities (taken yesterday). Pretty leaves, less intense sun, perfect outdoor temperatures. During fall I can actually enjoy the outdoors tbh.

Joke's on you, I was already not getting any sunlight-vitamin D in summer! The sun is a deadly lazer!

Actually, why not. Besides, has anyone conquered that bit yet?

I actually love that. Perfect weather.

right? finnaly i can see because it's not mega bright and think because its not mega hot

I work outside year round and cloudy weather is THE best- bit cooler in summer and the clouds make it a bit warmer in the winter. Love the clouds!!!

Not a ray of sunshine coming through, no shape to the clouds, just uniform grayness, no rain even? It feels like the sky is hanging too low and there's something wrong with your eyes, like you didn't notice you left your laptop at 25% brightness since last night. For weeks on end. Starting now until December or whenever the first snow comes. If it comes that is.

It may seem like relief when a too-hot summer is still fresh in your mind, but have you ever even experiened that and still say you love it?

4

Yes. It is my ideal weather.

I am a sweaty yeti though.

Might explain the preference.

Yeah, it seems like not many people get it. Even my fellow depressed friends much prefer the summer. I hate it

2

I can tell my family as often as i want, they always think im feeling better if the sun shines 😑

This is what I hate about New England lately, and it's only getting worse.

The summers are too damn hot and the rest of the year is too damn dark.

Just let us switch to AST ("permanent EDT"). We are too far north and too far east in a timezone that is just too damn big. At least that'll take care of it being too damn dark. There'll still be sunlight left when I'm off work.

I'm sure Wall St. would love to be an hour closer to London, no?

i don’t particularly enjoy getting off with the big lights on

I was today years old when I realized that we indeed fall into darkness for several months and then spring back into the light.

For those in the states, is this something a change with daylight savings can fix? I’m in the dark on that (pun!) and wondering if a change could help?

I mean, yeah, but I don't like using "fixed" here. Going to permanent regular time would mean the sun wouldn't rise an hour later during the DST months. DST ends on Halloween this year so we'd have an earlier sunrise right now.

But it doesn't change anything else. Winter is standard time already so it's not going to change anything about the sunrise or sunset in December. It's also not adding any sunlight, just shifting the times.

Soooo (Jesus it’s hard to get a response) HOW DO YOU THINK CHANGING DAYLIGHT SAVINGS COULD SOLVE IT?

Jesus I dare you, talk about it….

Daylight savings time is why we are an hour ahead right now. If it didn't exist we'd already have an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon. Not that it will even help much because by the time it ends we'll be down to like 10 hours of sunlight in a day anyway. Most of which will be spent at work.

1

Doesn't really help all that much, daylight savings doesn't really matter if you have around 8 hours of sunlight (or way less depending on where you are). With getting ready for work and all that jazz you'll always either get home in the dark or go out in the dark. I guess you could offset by 4 hours to get back home when it's sunny, but the benefits of jetlagging the entire population of a continent just for that is not worth it.

The current 1 hour shifts affect all sorts of things negatively (e.g. higher car crash stats in the 2 weeks after a change), so an even harder lag is probably not worth it.

The previous poster mentioned that the shift is the problem, which is partially true. The daylight savings time was invented so that factories needed less light, it's intentional to disregard the workers time off.

I quite like the significance placed on the "turning on of the lamp" in moomins books to signal the start of autumn. Dark!

Way back when I decided to dye my hair black, that song helped me choose which kind of black.

Ahh if the op is actually from yukon as the handle suggests, i believe their experience during fall is like that. Im a few degrees south from that latitude but its still quite depressing here tho only in the latter half of fall. Early october is still quite bearable.

5

I mean its not really a phenomenon, it happens every year in the north as the closer you get to the poles of earth the shorter days get during winter and longer during summer. Midnight sun happens before cause of the curvature of the earth plus light spreading, and no sun at all doesnt really happen so much, its more like a very small amount of sunlight for a long time. I dont live that north but it still means the total daylight we get during the winter solstice is about 6 and a half hours, from 8:45 to 15:15.

2

It's nice in October to start be able to see daylight in the evenings again

Based on the mood swings youre having over a post.... on fall, maybe you should get your brain health checked up?
