I remember seeing a poster of this when I was 11 in the video store and being transfixed. My dad playfully nudged me, saying "snap out out of it, son".

My brother and I went looking for walruses in Oregon one time and we ended up at the rogue brewery restaurant in Newport. As we walked in, the only black dude in the place was loudly singing karaoke of the Elvira country song. He was making everyone laugh by inserting rude comments between the lyrics or instead of. It was memorable. So now, whenever I see a picture of Elvira I think of that guy thundering "ELVIRA you fat tiddied bitch"

I might have been a child of 4 or 5 and was transfixed by I think a Halloween beer ad with her on it. Loved her ever since. She was the Goth Yang to Dolly Parton's blonde Yin.

Met her once at an event for a film she was in for literally 2 seconds. Absurdly nice and kind. Energy that lit up any sunny room. 10/10 human.

An underrated comedian, she had the "snarky horror movie host" shtick down cold, and turned it into a brand. And you've got to respect her sheer staying power in a business that chews people up as they age.

Cracy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. A rubber room. A rubber room with Elvira. And Elvira makes me crazy.

She's in a long term relationship with a woman, but she's fluid. Everyone is in with a chance

She was the theme of 3 different pinball machines produced over the years and all of them are sought after by collectors. They are really fun games with great art and theme integration. Scared Stiff is probably my favorite of the 3 (the other 2 being Elvira and the Party Monsters and Elvira's House of Horrors)

Pinball aside, as another commenter in the thread stated: she kinda influenced my taste in women, as well 😅

The innuendo in Scared Stiff is amazing. It’s one of my favorite games.

Actually very well-designed games, imo! I love Scared Stiff because it has distinctive modes/challenges and particularly for the "wizard mode" where you try to run the "Stiff-o-Meter" to it's limit. It's got frogs ("Leapers") that jump when you hit certain targets, it has a spinning spider in the backbox that you occasionally get to spin like a prize wheel to collect various bonuses, and the whole playfield gets used in creative ways to set up the various objectives. The sense of humor is spot-on too. I would add one to my collection if i had the money and space for it...

I don't think they would be quite as sought-after by collectors if they weren't genuinely good games. If I'm not mistaken, all 3 titles were designed by Dennis Nordman -- a well-known and beloved designer who made some of the classics from the late 80's into the early 90's.

Collection? I'm intrigued, what's the range that these machines go for? How much would these sought out ones go for on average? Are they easy to fix and maintain, I guess something a hobbyist and collectors would learn to do?

Anyways, cool!

Really varies, but generally prices have gone up with time. I would say a non-sought-after older title might be available in the $500-1000 range, but it would likely need some amount of fixing/freshening/overhaul. We used to joke some games would be worth "$10k by xmas" but games today have made that figure sound cheap, lol.

Realistically though, you could get a beater that's working for around $1000-2000 +/- but it really depends what era you're interested in...Newer games can run closer to $4-6k+ used, and $7-15k new. Believe it or not there are several companies making games nowadays, though there was a time where there was only 1 left (Stem Pinball)...!

Are they easy to fix and maintain, I guess something a hobbyist and collectors would learn to do?

Not easy per se, but if you understand electronics it's nothing too crazy. You need to be able to solder. There's tons of helpful people online at places like Pinside that take pleasure helping others fix their games (I've been among the helpers for a long time, after having received so much help when i got started--i try to give back 🙂)

There are many aftermarket replacement cpu boards which solves one of the biggest challenges back when i started...repairing circuit boards is substantially harder and takes a lot more know-how than fixing up the mechanisms on the top and bottom of the playfield. With many solid choices on the market, you can replace all the old circuit boards, leaving you to focus on the playfield where the action is.

Parts are available at a number of distributors, my favorite being The Pinball Resource in Poughkeepsie, NY. Steve Young has single-handedly kept pinball alive for the world, his operation provides so many parts and still do to this day. They don't accept card payment either--strictly check or money order! Old school as fuck, i love it. Newbies come along and start bitching about his ancient website and how he needs to get with the times etc etc. He's pushing upper 70s early 80s from what i gather--and he's still moving forward every day producing rare or impossible-to-find parts in addition to droves of standard replacement parts as well. Nothing but respect, and when he's gone he'll leave a hole that can't be filled again. Feel free to reach out if you'd like further info or assistance getting into the addiction hobby 😅

Hey! A fellow pinhead. You going to expo this year? Looking at the website, it looks like its going to be a pretty packed dealer area this year.

Ahhh i wish! I've heard about Expo every year since i really dove into the hobby, but I've never made it there. We do the annual Allentown Pinfest to get our fix, but Expo sounds like a much larger event. Someday, hopefully!

Fortunately i live in the Greater Chicagoland area, so im able to go most years. I hope someday you're able to go as well. It's really grown over the last couple of decades.

Her show, Movie Macabre, was fun. It's a format you don't get on TV anymore; anthology series like that. It's practically impossible to do on Youtube and it doesn't really work in a streaming format and linear television is full of nothing but the 24 hour bullshit cycle and advertisements for the shit my dad keeps asking me if he should buy.

Look up Cassandra Peterson, the actress that plays Elvira. So beautiful

She's also a leftie like most of us here. I remember her making headlines a little while back because she got rid of her Tesla when Muskrat did something stupid or other.

did something stupid or other.

Yeah like the Nazi salutes. Run of the mill stupid stuff /s

If youre so inclined check out Elvira's Cookbook From Hell. Its super campy, legitimately hilarious, and the recipes are much better than you'd think! Nothing mind bending, but super charming and well worth the read/cook.

She's had three pinball games, but i have to agree with you, Scared Stiff was pretty kick-ass, Party Monsters was good, and House of Horrors was okay, but Scared Stiff had some great shots, fun challenges, and while Party Monsters played it pretty safe, Scared Stiff really leaned into what Elvira does best...innuendo. It's still a fucking awesome game, and if anyone wants to check it out, it's available in Pinball FX on Steam.

I loved Elvira and the Party Monsters. I didn’t even know about the others thanks for sending down a rabbit hole.

Talk about someone that helped me in my um formative years.

I wonder how many people have gone up to her and told her without an ounce of shame they discovered themselves to her.

Carrie Fisher had to deal with that, and iirc she wasnt thrilled.

lemmy.world

Carrie Fisher knew what she was. I ALSO recall that she owned up to her failings and didn't bother to censor her inner bitch. Should we all aspire to such emotional transcendence. ^_^

She was a joy to meet at ComicCon. I was there to be morale support for my mother, mostly because she was nervous about meeting her girlhood hero. And, well, she was a hero of mine too.

She was brisk, but warm. Kind of like the wise and worldly wine aunt at the family reunion. She had her dog with her, and he was napping on her lap. She signed my mom's autograph, and boffed her with a handful of glitter (it was her thing.) She saw me standing there, and asked, "You want some?" "I thought it was only for people who got your autograph." She laughed and boffed me on the head with a puff of Carrie Fisher glam.

The day she passed away felt like losing a family member. May the Force be with her.

I remember seeing her in magazines etc and I was so fucking shocked when I heard her speak. Just absolutely didn’t expect her super Cali/hippy speech.

She is still the coolest person ever and She is 100% goals.

Best they can do these days is Svengoolie. And he's a perfectly likeable guy, just not my type.

Does anyone even know about Svengoolie outside of Chicago?

He got national syndication? Unreal.

Used to be just a local Chicago thing.

My first introduction, as a twenty-something Tasmanian, to Elvira was when the Amiga game came out in 1990. I also managed to find the movie in a video rental store. I never saw the tv show except in snippets. She's great!

Elvira! Oom-papa, oom-papa, oom-papa, wow, wow.

It's rumored that the stripper on the cover of Tom Waits' album Small Change is her before she was Elvira, but neither she nor Tom know for sure.

Ahh, Elvira. As a member of the Bar Sinister, Scorpio, and born on Halloween, the Mistress of the Dark is my one true love. And more beautiful than Morticia, the OG not the recent ones.
