Bought a new pencil, old one broke
This one spins the lead as you write so it stays sharp!
Might order the fancier metal one is this one proves to be good. But this one was available locally.

I have the same one but with added grip for furious writing.
It's self-vulcanizing tape.
Ah yes, the foretold Destroyer of Leads!
I've had my eye on the metal one for years. I just don't really write anything by hand anymore
I've got the aluminum version. I absolutely could not resist the gadget factor. I almost exclusively write with a fountain pen and don't have much use for a pencil, so that decision may have been questionable but I still stand by it.
I have one, I only really use it with my water resistant notebook with slight rain
I had the realisation that I write a decent bit for school. And I'm not at my parents' mercy for pencils anymore, used the previous one for about 6 years. So why not buy something a bit fancier?
Fair enough. I guess I really do need to start with cert training, so maybe I'll treat myself to one
This is appropriate dull content.
I have one. It is good.
I've got both the plastic and metal versions. Best mechanical pencil, ever. I'll never go back to Pentel.
Had a Pentel Click before. The threads holding the tip in somehow broke, after only 6 years of use.
I do miss the Twisterase eraer though. This tiny one pretty much unusable
Sweet mother of god those are expensive. I'mma stick with my Staedtler pencil 2mm pencil and sharpener I've been using for decades now. The only real downside is I need to know someone that smokes cigarettes so I can have a ready supply of filters to replace the wiper in the sharpener.
Those are great! There's even a new one out, called kuru toga dive. It rotates the tip the same way as this version but also keeps the lead a the same length by mechanically pushing it forward ever so slightly every time the pen is pushed onto the paper. I was gifted one and really like it - they cost a fortune though
I have a "Dive" and it's the best mechanical pencil I've ever used. (And I've used a huge number of them.) If they can ever get the price down to something reasonable it will take over the world.
After posting, I thought I should check to see where the prices on the Dive are now. When I last looked they were running over $300, but now they're under $100. That's not great, but it is a huge improvement.
To be fair, I think Uni's official price for them has always been around $100. They have just been so hard to find that dealers, even respectable dealers, have been charging what the market would bear. It's great to see them shifting back toward reality.
How much was it, OP?
Not OP but writing/stationary nerd. The normal kuru toga is about $9 (USD) up to $15 for limited edition ones like the Studio Ghibli collab pen or with a metal grip but plastic body. The metal is $30-50. There's a super fancy one with extra features like auto extending lead and where you can set desired lead length. That's like $80.
I paid 8€, which is about $9 indeed. Just a little bit more expensive than the basic plastic Pentel and the like.
Made of plastic, but seems of decent quality.
I have a few of the plastics and they are top notch. Thanks to this post I discovered there was a metal version!
Nice. I also have 2 kuru toga. One 0.5mm and one 0.3mm.
I don't write too much but I have the metal version, it's so nice.
Wait until you here about the Kuru Toga Dive....
I keep my Pilot H1005 preciously, but I want to try this Kuru Toga
How does that work? Is it battery powered and continuous, or is the spinning intermittent?
oh I've seen it's mechanism on YouTube. it has a toothed gear that rotates with every press. so every stroke of the pencil rotates it a little.
Huh, that’s a really cool idea
Id never believed it would work nicely if people in this thread hadn’t said it’s great
With initial testing it seems to work quite well. I don't notice the ~1mm the lead pushed in when I hit the paper.
It's 40 "clicks" per rotation.
Some are 40 and some are 20. 40 works well for traditional Japanese writing, but it isn't quick enough for cursive.
I do like the Kuru Toga, though I rarely write with pencil anymore
Looks like it is good quality, hope it serves you well.
Nice! My personal favorite is the mizubishi eye roller pen. Dries fast enough for left handed writing and is really smooth.
Ha! Did not know the Uniball pen was made by Mitsubishi! These have been my go to for quite awhile now. I’ll even start writing with something else and stop to go find one of these instead. You can purchase multiple ink colours, gel and even waterproof ink. But to loop back to the pencil, nice!
