What is with people who "dont watch the news" but are up to date on all the news?

I asked my mom if she watched the news today and she said she didn't. I told her something I heard on the news. She then told me she had just heard that talked about on the news.

Maybe it's an old person thing, but "watching" the news means sitting down and watching a network television program.

We don't consider online articles or Tiktok "watching the news"

Listening and reading are both valid ways to aquire information. Often reading especially is significantly faster than watching something as well.

It's possible she listens to the news. I listen to NPR and the Tagesschau (German news) daily.

This is the stuff I pay for

Lawfare for Trump stuff

Peter Zeihan for what’s happening next year

I read/listen to as much of The Economist as I can get through each week

The free one that is key is What’s Going On with Shipping

The TV news in the US is beyond useless

Oh my dad is one of those. He watches The YouTube instead, which is somehow even worse for his brain and disposition.

Personally I go through spurts of hyper engagement and non engagement so I wouldn't really say I pay attention to the news bc I'm not consistent or deliberate
