I didn't sleep last night but it wasn't my choice. I just didn't get tired until about a half hour before I had to be up. Needless to say, today fucking sucked.

Yeah, all-nighters are easy. It's more the ~24 hrs+ cliff that comes out of nowhere that's rough. Then there's the battle to power on for another 14-15 hrs through the waves of highs and lows, because I'd rather that than sleep during the day and blow up the sleeping pattern.

Pulling all-nighters for gaming shows very little experience with pulling all-nighters.

16

Yeah I was gonna say, I do all nighters all the time, just not the fun ones anymore.

3

My "all dayers" is when I sleep from 12am to 4pm. You mean I have to be awake for that time??

lemmy.world

Haven't done an all-nighter since college, but a Factorio binge is just about the only thing that can keep me up past 2am.

lemmy.world

Its not even a binge for me. Its: oh one hr before bed? Let me just fix this real quick. 3am: fuck.

yasss, I'll just add a few signals to upgrade the iron-ore rail network for longer trains. Maybe I should just upgrade all stations... it won't take much longer... do I hear birds?

My problem is opposite. I am trying my best not to pull all-nighter every night xD

Tho I get my energy boost around 7 pm so yeah.

Whenever I see something like this, I always think what the fuck. What kind of terrible shape are you in to have this low of an energy level already as a young man? Like you're not even halfway through your life expectancy and you're already this run down? I took a 61-year-old and a 72-year-old The Burning Man and the 61-year-old was routinely pulling all-nighters. Some of y'all really need to have a hard look at your health and maybe go talk to a doctor and get fully checked out to make sure there's not something causing this level of fatigue, especially if you're a desk job guy.

13

I had a very unhappy youth but somehow I made it out still very high energy. I think it's a contributing factor but not the primary cause.

Ive recently discovered Lyme and bartonella are insanely common and cause a LOT of hard to track down effects (tiresome, anger, brain fog, joint swelling, bad sleep, heart arrhythmia, salt craving, reaction to certain foods, hearing loss, crawling skin; are a tiny amount of symptoms).. I'd be willing to bet a large portion of the population has untreated Lyme or similar.

Ticks are exploding in population due to climate change as well. Get tested everyone. ! You can also get it from a cat scratch if a cat has been bit by a flea/bug with Lyme so every lemming better get tested, ha

For real, I'm 30+ and still pulling all-nighters all the time with no problems, and I don't think I'm in good shape

3

30 was basically a brick wall. In my 20s I pulled an all nighter at least twice a month no problem. Now I become a complete zombie by 10am

Wait until your 40s.

I don't usually even stay up for New Year's anymore.

8

i go to bed on 12/31 and hope secretly that it’s all a simulation that ends.

By that age you'd have seen such an event almost 20 times, give or take. You know how it turns out and don't need to see it for yourself, you can just get the highlights later if anything abnormal happens.

If I'm really locked in on something I can get to like 2am. It's rare that anything does that for me anymore though. Too many other worries distracting me.

4

I'm practically nocturnal, so staying up til sunrise is no problem, in fact getting to sleep before sunrise is the tricky part. It's the after sunrise part when I hit the wall.

Most of the time when someone brags about 4-day weeks they still work 40+ hours and I don't envy them much

4

That's true, I only work 32 hours though. And it's not bragging, I've had burnout before and can't work more than that for long periods of time, my body cannot handle it anymore.

I was pulling all-nighters well into my 40's, but I had insomnia. It wasn't something I wanted to do. However, I did take advantage of it for work.

I found the solution to my insomnia and never looked back. Now I fall asleep almost like a normal person.

http://www.sleepwithmepodcast.com/

YMMV, but it worked for me from day one. I read about it on a post on the content aggregator site which shall not be named.

I opened the link right there at work, started playing it, and thought , "t This guy is so boring I feel myself falling asleep already!"

The first night I listened, I was asleep before the intro was done, but then when the episode ended, I woke up. The next night I loaded all the episodes, but then when my alarm went off the next morning, I kept snoozing the alarm and falling asleep again. Finally, I started it with a sleep timer to stop it playing a few minutes before my alarm would go off.

I think that was about 10 years ago.

Occasionally, when life is really, really bad, I still have nights where I have trouble getting to sleep, but that's a once or twice a year thing now. I used to get less than 4 hours of sleep every night, with about 1 night per week where I would get no sleep at all.

It isn't for everyone.

granola is perfectly healthy dude. no idea what you are on about. it knocks me out because my stomach is full instead of empty.

maybe you have it confused with granola bars, which are basically candy.

If you aren't a doctor you shouldn't be suggesting normal bodily function = diabeetus.

2

Still something to consider. Apparently people think granola isn't loaded with sugar and becomes healthy when not pressed into bar form. But please, if you're living closer to the condition than I, go off king and or queen

My strategy is never drinking coffeine (decaf coffee all day) and then, when I go to lans, I drink a White Monster per day. Keeps me awake till 5-6 am.

Drink too much coffee, and you can get allergic to it. Source: myself. Used to drink up to 2 litres a day lol. Now I only drink water and a glass or two a day of juice.

I do the same as you with an energy drink, but damn, do they taste like shit!

3

I'd have to off myself if that happened. I literally wake up for my coffee, its the only thing I look forward too on work days.

1

You can get energy drinks that are just Paraxanthine now, all the good parts of Caffeine without the jitters.

1

I don't think I pulled my first all-nighter until my mid-twenties. I still do it maybe twice a year, but honestly my sleep schedule these days is bad enough that it's probably carcinogenic.

I wish all nighters were still an option My body is ready, i want it. But it's not the responsible thing to do. Gotta function properly the next day

Being an adult sucks, they warned us about it

3

being an adult is awesome.

but i hated being a child. It was miserable and video games were very limited supply and my time was very limited.

I hated my childhood and there's nothing that could get me to relive that part of my life. That being said this whole work for money exchange program we're forced into as adults sucks....40+ hours a week.... EVERY WEEK! And no recess or summer vacation!

3
lemmy.world

I have six weeks of PTO and a dozen holidays a year. that's about 8 weeks of time I don't work a year.

3

Rub it in why don't you. :P

I had sporadic health issues earlier this year that weren't consistent enough for FMLA and I'm down to 4 hours PTO. If I'm a good boy, I'll gain maybe an hour a month.

Plus, the whole deal at my workplace was they acknowledged they paid under market rate in exchange for extra flexibility. Now we have new management who desperately doesn't want to pay us for time on-call anymore, and doesn't believe in time in-lieu (work after hours, get the equivalent off during business hours). I'm a full fledged systems engineer making under $90k. That's a lot of money, but it sure as hell isn't competitive for my skills, and more and more I'm wondering if it's really worth what it's costing me.

2
oppy1984reply

True, I have a good amount of PTO saved up, but I can't take it in large groups outside of emergencies.

1
lemmy.world

then you dont' really have PTO. time for a new employer that let's you actually use your time off.

Meh, I'm not really a vacation person. Honestly I have to force myself to take time off every year, it's not a loyalty thing it's just in my DNA to just work, my mom is the same, her father was the same. Though I admit I am trying to avoid ending up like him since he was such a worker he died on the factory floor, heart attack not an accident.

1

I ain't tired; my eyes start to get blurry unless I have drops.

1

I'm glad if I make it to 3AM... and that is when I had my nap around noon.

1

ive always been eepy. I mean, naturally i will tend to being up at night, but being a marathon type of gamer is not in my blood

Why is everyone acting like pulling all nighters is a good thing? I don't know if this is health issues, this is just having things to do daily.

1

aspirational goal

people wish they could do it and idealize it as super awesome.

sort of like marathons. but they don't know or acknowledge the consequences of doing such things, which make them far less appearling. like shitting yourself in mile 14 and having to run another 2 hours in your own shit and then the next 4 days where you can barely move because you're in fatigue.

that or I guess going on a drug/alcohol bender? people love to idealize that too.
