For those unaware.

"Some early riders came back with lacerations to their bodies, whose cause was later determined to be teeth that had been knocked out of riders' mouths and become lodged in the interior walls."

46

A former Navy physician found that riders were experiencing as much as nine Gs of acceleration as they went through the loop.

v^2^ / r is a bitch.

19

Do you know which sponsor definitely won't kill you in their slides? Raytheon.

9

This is like reading about early oval racetracks in the US, which were made out of wooden boards: the drivers were getting splinters flying in their faces, aside from a host of other problems.

3

Capitalism in a nutshell.

You get to choose from one million different equally sucky options.

6

Well if you want a low income option you could always just go to Action Park!

I too played rollercoaster tycoon where every coaster was a euthanasia coaster!

43

If it had anything less than 10.0 nausea rating it wasn't a real coaster

5

I mean who better to employ to fashion a suicide rollercoaster than a man who has spent his life preventing rollercoaster casualties?

::: spoiler book spoilers ish How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu talks about this in one of the chapters. A disease is killing children so an amusement park was created for children to enjoy a roller coaster ride instead of dying in a hospital bed. :::

Ooh it's got great reviews. I will check this one out, thanks!

It is a good book but I found it extremely depressing.

I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy when I was like 22 and it sent me into a decade long depression I never really recovered from.

So I think I'll pass. Good tip tho.

Read some reviews first. It's a lot more hopeful and pleasant than The Road.

2

Hey even The Road ended on a happy note.

After all that hardship and horror, the poor starving child was rescued and lived happily ever after with a family on a boat and they just sailed the white blue oceans as free as the sun.

My interpretation is that McCarthy was saying, yeah, this will happen, this has happened, and here's your happy ending so you don't slit your wrists after reading this.

The End.

Highly inefficient killing machine. It's like they're trying to avoid killing its passengers but failing. This failed as an euthanasia machine at the planning stage.

It's just physics people.

Enough Gs and your brain and internal organs smush into mush, and I'm not talking Warren Gs.

The ride's seven inversions would inflict 10 g (g-force) on its passengers for 60 seconds, causing g-force related symptoms starting with greyout through tunnel vision to syncope, and eventually g-LOC (g-force induced loss of consciousness) and death.

But

According to the National Institutes of Health, the human brain can survive without oxygen for up to four or five minutes. During this time, the brain is not capable of functioning at anything near its normal capacity. Extensive and irreversible brain damage may occur through cell death if oxygen levels are not restored quickly enough after this period.

What am I missing?

7

G-force taking the blood out of the brain.

If a person suddenly stops breathing there is still oxygen in their blood that their brain can utilize. However with strong g-forces the blood can be displaced out of the brain entirely. Think about where the feet will be on the coaster and where the blood would be pushed to.

toddestanreply

Presumably they would be clinically dead at the end of the ride, that is they would have stopped breathing and their heart would have stopped beating. It may still be possible to revive someone with prompt medical attention, but for the job to be finished all you'd have to do at that point is nothing.

4

With my luck they'd have to Mitch McConnell me up for a second ride

3
sh.itjust.works

Honestly, I’m surprised this isn’t americas death penalty method of choice.

6

Invest once, and you can euthanize hundreds of people per day for years.

2

Why would it not be easier to just seal off a room, and cycle the oxygen out until it's pure nitrogen gas. The people would pass out quickly, experience no real physical pain and just leave them in their for 30 minutes (well more than needed)

If there was an assisted suicide way to go, id basically just ask for the mask at the orthodontist then ease off into never worrying again.

6
lemmy.world

It would be easier, that's why no one has ever built this roller coaster.

18
Diddlydeereply

It would, but that's not the point in the design.

6
piefed.social

you don't need a whole room. that one guy made the coffin like devices.

::: spoiler actual, nonconsensual murder Wasn't one woman found with marks of someone manually choking her? And one of the Swiss "entrepreneurs" (if you should call them that) was convicted of the crime. :::

1
lemmy.world

Yeah that's why I said just the mask would be fine with me. But if its assisted suicide then I imagine others would have other wishes. Possibly going as a group or who knows what

2
piefed.social

im not sure about the mask. maybe a helmet. you really want no chance of polluting with outside air. Also good if its not to constraining.

3
lemmy.world

I mean when the doctor puts you under he uses a mask for a little until you're out really and takes it off so you dont get brain damage and die, if he just left it on i dont see how it would stop working unless it ran out? Maybe I'm remembering something else

2

Sure but it gets taped down and such when your under and you are not worried about air getting in as much as so much aneshteia getting out that it will be to low a dosage. With nitrogen you don't want oxygen extending out your awareness or triggers from soemthing like co2. You more worried about it getting in. Then also it just gets to a level of being tussed up which can wierd you out. I mean if you had to but I think the coffin/pod thing is a good compromise of comfort and being able to feel ate ease along with assurance on function.

3

Yeah – that's not how the gas chambers worked. They used Zyklon B, which was designed to be painful (or at least a welcome coincidence). ::: spoiler fucked up quote from a KZ worker

2

This coaster is the kind of whimsy the world needs now more than ever

2

This was just an art project, not something to build in reality as it obviously is bad in every way possible

This is a great idea, as long as everyone agrees to wearing really effective adult diapers. Otherwise it will be a water ride.

5

10gs for 60 seconds would probably not be long enough to kill most of your passengers, especially if they had training or just decent cardiovascular system.

People can sustain 10g for around a minute before they g-loc. If you G-loc around a minute or 45 sec as soon as G force drop below a certain point you start to recover. You would have to extend the time after you G-loc to go on for 4-6 minutes.

The dude has a masters in physics. I'm pretty sure he did the math and that that's enough to kill a man.

It will drain the blood completely out of your brain until it stops functioning permanently. It will also cause irreparable trauma to your organs.

That's what the smaller circles are for. You need to see it in 3D, the loops aren't linear, they will trail off into a spiral, away from the "viewer" (or towards, depending which side you choose to see it from).

It's sustained 10G over 60 seconds, through seven inversions.

It'll kill you for sure.

3

The dude has a masters in physics. I'm pretty sure he did the math and that that's enough to kill a man.

Just because you are a master of physics does not mean you are a master of physiology...

It will drain the blood completely out of your brain until it stops functioning permanently. It will also cause irreparable trauma to your organs.

10G is not enough to completely drain your brain of blood, nor is it enough to cause irreparable harm to your organs for a healthy adult.

For positive or upward g force we are pretty tolerant, though you will definitely G-loc, but G-loc isn't really that harmful if it isn't something that's happening frequently.

"The human body is flexible and deformable, particularly the softer tissues. A hard slap on the face may briefly impose hundreds of g locally but not produce any real damage; a constant 16 g for a minute, however, may be deadly."

For negative vertical g force we are much less tolerant, and is much more damaging to the body. That is when blood is forced to your head instead of you feet.

"Resistance to "negative" or "downward" g, which drives blood to the head, is much lower. This limit is typically in the −2 to −3 g0 (−20 to −29 m/s2) range. This condition is sometimes referred to as red out where vision is literally reddened[11] due to the blood-laden lower eyelid being pulled into the field of vision.[12] Negative g-force is generally unpleasant and can cause damage. Blood vessels in the eyes or brain may swell or burst under the increased blood pressure, resulting in degraded sight or even blindness."

For horizontal g forces we are quite tolerant.

"Early experiments showed that untrained humans were able to tolerate a range of accelerations depending on the time of exposure. This ranged from as much as 20 g for less than 10 seconds, to 10 g for 1 minute, and 6 g0 for 10 minutes for both eyeballs in and out. These forces were endured with cognitive facilities intact, as subjects were able to perform simple physical and communication tasks. The tests were determined not to cause long- or short-term harm although tolerance was quite subjective, with only the most motivated non-pilots capable of completing tests"

My father used to teach aeronautical physiology when he was in the Air Force and then for FAA when he retired from the military. He operated the centrifuge at Holloman AFB for 5 years when we were stationed in New Mexico. Sustained 10g won't be fun, and you will probably G-loc and shit your pants, but it wouldn't kill the average person unless they were negative gs, and that isnt happening from hypoxia, nor isn't a pleasant or fun way to go.

I don't know about that, but watch "The Centrifuge Brain Project" on YouTube. It's something.

There is a short film on YouTube IIRC, saw it years ago but forget the name of it 😶

I can hardly think of worse ways to die, having all the time in the world to think it through on the way up listening to the "click-clack-click-clack" of the train on the rails, and then going over the falls... Maybe drowning and burning but that's about what I can come up with.

Euthanasia. Although it was just an exercise rather than a planned invention.

12
Ann Archyreply

Honestly, I'm pretty sure this is a more humane way of killing people, and I think the people about to get killed would agree. That's kind of the point of the artwork. If it stood between lethal injection and this, it'd be roller coaster all the way down, baby.

You'd black out way before you died, and it'd be a proper sendoff I think. Just, ok, that's your life, goodbye, all aboard, off you go, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa......................................................-

6
infosec.pub

Every year many people die placidly in their sleep, accidentally poisoned by carbon monoxide. No special injection or elaborate devices, it’s one of the most painless, effective, and cheap options, but people really like to over engineer euthanasia.

3

I'm with you 100%. Cheap, effective, painless.

In lieu of that, what about the deathcoaster though huh?

3

The Indonesians committed genocide with a wire tied to a wall.

Wrap it around the neck and pull. Next.

It really is shocking how the Nazis overcomplicated their genocide

1

All euthanasia devices are kinda cxary to read about, honestly

1

We hypothetically could have it.

You can build it from like, maybe five trips to Home Depot.

Not perfect, but I bet there's efficiency to be increased.

How about a roller coaster that ends straight into a concrete wall like on those train crash test videos.

In fact, shit maybe just put people on the train crash test trains and save us five trips to Home Depot!

2

all passengers are given the choice to exit the train if they wish to do so. If they do not, they will have some time to say their last words.

All passengers are required to press a button to continue the ride, which then takes the cars down a 500 m (1,600 ft) drop, propelling the train at speeds up to 360 kilometres per hour

...

Subsequent inversions or a second run of the rollercoaster would serve as insurance against unintentional survival of more robust passengers...

That's contradictory

3

More like "so you wouldn't press a death button to end up alive and likely disabled"

4

I mean, it would work fine without all the loops. Just let the drop continue to the ground without leveling off.

2

What would the pay be for the park employees who clear the bodies?

1

You sounded so serious. It's an art installation! Purpose is to make us think about death sentences, and what a humane one would look like. The ones we employ in the USA are very painful, often go wrong, and require actual federal crime to perform in the case of lethal injections as in the Dream Pharma debacle to source the poison going against federal regulations.

It speaks to the absurdity of the death penalty, and how if would really mean to be "humane" in state sponsored killings, this is a cheap, safe, 100% reliable, and fun way to die. So why not prefer this over injections, or hangings, or firing squads?

Anyway that's what I got from it at least.

Edit: personally I think carbon monoxide is the answer. It's free, simple, painless, and very effective.
