Keep hearing this about podcasts and youtubers and I don't get it. Thinking that the people talking to a microphone or camera are your friends feels silly akin to thinking there's a tiny orchestra in the earphones that sings for you. I get that people are gullible and believe media personalities are always truthful, but surely they don't experience an actual friendship with people they've never seen?

I think it is. There are times when I've truoy felt like the person on the video/podcast is in the room with me (feeling wise), and times when I've wanted to butt in to the conversation.
If the implication is that the boy thinks he's really spending time with 3 icecream eating girls then I must disagree: it makes me feel exactly like that picture, not that boy.

To me it feels not much different than listening to a radio talk show or a debate on TV.

I got called weird, stupid, and was told nobody will ever listen to your "radio show".

Never happened to me. I have supported some podcasts, but not because I want senpai to notice me!
