in the same time period? I have a hard time believing this honestly. It just does not work that way.

I can chug two beers maybe have a third and if I stop I'm lights out in 30 minutes..

Liquor. Usually whiskey and diet soda. I can chug the first. Sip the rest of them. Maybe about 4 a hour. keeps me awake and the buzz is a lot smoother, best way to describe it than beer.

oh yeah. then its definately the carbs. try having two donuts with the wiskey and see how you do. or like two servings of oat meal. alternatively try two light beers.

Brown sugar and Irish whiskey in oatmeal is actually amazing.

2

os sure pouring alcohol into your breakfast. totally not an alcoholic with that behaviour :). Im sorta wondering with like rice and oatmeal and other things that absorb the liquid around them. like they are to volatile to stove cook it but if you thermos cook it with 50% boiling water and really warm alcohol and seal it tight. like all other ingredients in first and then boiling water right at the end. mmmmmm.

just make sure to scarf the donuts as fast as you drink the beer. so if you get a beer and drink it down real fast and then have another. you want to have a shot and scarf a donut and have another shot and then eat another donut.

And four more whiskey shots after that; got it.

theoretically you should be tired at that point. hey. wait a second. your not the op!

Are you sure you don’t just “think” you’re more functional. Hard booze gives me a much “brighter” drunkenness . You still get drunk but have more energy without all the heavy carbs and sugars

12
sopuli.xyz

Thinking outside the box, you might be having a carb crash. Beer is carb-heavy, while whiskey is carb-free.

10

No alcohol is carb-free, because alcohol is a carb. It’s an oxymoron like “acid-free vinegar” or “no-sodium table salt”. But yes, beer has a lot of carbs in comparison.

lemmy.cafe

Alcohol of any kind is a carb, a fairly simple one at that.

But there's definitely more volume to a beer, and I'm pretty confident it's carb count is way higher.

There's also other things in beer, while whiskey is nearly all alcohol and water.

7

Alcohol of any kind is a carb, a fairly simple one at that.

Do you have a source to support that statement? Everything I can find, including the American Diabetes Association and Teladoc, says otherwise.

I get that your body processes alcohol similar to fructose, but that doesn't make it a carb.

2

This may be the correct answer because my brother has the same issue. He can down many shots but when he drinks beer, he gets tired faster. I myself can't really comment because I don't drink

I am prediabetic and I don't drink often. I just notice beer puts me to sleep and buzzes me far faster than liquor

1

You do actually absorb alcohol faster when it is watered down. And beer has more water, so you would absorb the alcohol from it faster. The reason shots are typically associated with getting drunk quickly is simply because you can drink a lot of shots faster than you can drink a lot of beer. Doing four shots back-to-back would have people in a good mood, but slamming four beers would have most people uncomfortably trying to keep it down. Simply because the volume and carbonation in beer makes it harder to drink quickly.

All of this is to say: If you want to get proper sloshed, chase your shots with some water. It’ll water down the shots you just took and make them hit you faster.

Not sure, all alcohol is equivalent. It doesn't matter if you have whisky, beer, tequila, wine, etc. It's all the same alcohol. It's possible that it's related to a routine, are you usually in a more active mindset when drinking whiskey? Do you usually have a beer or two right before bed?

6

All alcohol is equivalent, yes, but there are other ingredients in the drink other than alcohol, which can make a difference when it comes to how the alcohol is absorbed and can impact the body in other ways as well.

11

Carbonation enables the digestive system able to metabolize alcohol faster. So a carbonated beer may peak your blood alcohol faster.

3

The alcohol isn’t the only ingredient though. For instance, the gut absorbs alcohol more readily when it is more diluted. So shots are good for efficiently getting alcohol into your stomach, but then your stomach won’t be able to absorb them very quickly. Whereas a beer is mostly water, so it will be readily absorbed by your gut.

The only reason shots are the go-to for getting drunk quickly is because nobody wants to slam a six-pack right at the start of the party, then feel bloated all evening due to the carbonation and carbs. But doing six shots is easy in comparison.

3

I don't drink often just find I can tolerate liquor better than beer.

1

The whiskey puts alcohol relatively fast into your body, making that you don't feel drunk yet even though motor skills are probably lacking. With beer, the delivery is slower, making your mind slow before the motor skills give in. At least, that's how it works for me.

What size are those shots? Just about every country has its own shot size, and "a beer" could be .33l or .5l.

That said, I experience similar effects even if I make sure that the alcohol amounts are equivalent. Something about beer makes it go right to my head, unlike spirits. IIRC both sugar content and carbonation increase the speed at which alcohol gets absorbed, but I don't get this effect with longdrinks, either. Maybe it's just placebo ...

6
feddit.org

damn dude

I got nothing, even assuming .5l beer with 5% ABV, those 7 whisky shots have seven times as much alcohol as 2 beers.

If I drink it's usually in the evening. Like this weekend sat down to watch a volleyball game had 3 beers. Feel asleep before the first set ended at like 8pm.

Next night about 4 mixed drinks in a hour. Just whiskey diet coke and about 2 after. Had a good buzz managed to stay up until 2am

This is maybe at most once a month

1

How fast are you drinking the shots? There is also differential absorption between the stomach and the lower intestine.

For science try drinking your normal shots then two pints of water. This is not medical advice.

3
lemmy.world

It's the caffeine in the coke propping you up, I think. You are essentially making a speedball.

Having said that - I like a cocktail in the weekend (one double so two of yours not 7, holy shit that is binge drinking and definitely not good if you are prediabetic! I'd be under the table before the last one) and my husband does prefer a couple beers and he is snoring on the couch by the evening, I don't feel so tired. So maybe you are on to something.

How is whiskey and diet coke? That doesn't sound very good, though I like each of those separately. Like I think I'd prefer tonic or just fizzy water and lime with whiskey. When you are willing to have fewer come on over to [email protected] and make something fancy, I'm sure less carbs in one nice drink than 7 shots!

You've never had a jack and coke? It's like the most basic drink there is. actually usually use Pepsi

1
RBWellsreply

No, I don't like coke/Pepsi, the sugared ones are too sweet, and my anorexic drink was Crystal Light & Everclear, lol. Which is pretty good. I do like the diet coke but not as a mixer.

1

Try a Cuba Libre. But use diet Dr pepper instead of coke

IngredientsRum: 2 ounces (light or aged)Lime juice: 1/2 ounce, freshly squeezedCola: 4 ounces (traditionally Coca-Cola)Garnish: Lime wedge or wheelOptional: 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to balance the sweetness

2

Wait......is 6-8 shots a lot?

Damn. Maybe I was an alcoholic in my drinking days. I'd also be just fine with 6-8 shots.

But I wouldn't be ok with beer. Not because the beer is too potent. It's more that beer is very carbinated, and filling. I'd drink a few beers and just not have room until I pee. Whereas with shots, you could do like 60-80 shots throughout the day, and maybe pee twice. Although you won't remember it.

OP guzzles half a bottle of whiskey and ends up partially dysfunctional. Or OP overdoses on beer and passes out. OP better consider tee-totaling.

Two beers (as stated in their post and the comments) is overdosing? Maybe for a four year old. But two beers shouldn’t get an adult anywhere near proper OD levels.

Alcohol is definitely a drug, and according to the WHO even small amounts are dangerous for your health. By his own admission the poster is well beyond manageable amounts.

You know what they say about people who assume something.

I'm actually a light drinker , dont do it very often. I just find I can handle liquor far better than beer

That may be a low total amount (only drinking once a month), but that would typically be described as binge drinking.

3

To me binge drinking has always been blackout drunk can't remember, throwing up etc. I never come close to that point

1
lemmy.cafe

Oh, trusting the WHO? You should probably read up on some of the psuedo-science they peddle.

Is alcohol good for us? Depends on how you define that.

But in the end, everything you've said has fuck all to do with OPs question, you just wanted to get on your high horse, preach and condemn.

Tell me again how you're perfect?
