Never really thought about this, but what if we showed them having a positive response without showing what the results were? Then the audience can decide.

78

The positive reaction to a positive test tends to be elation. The positive reaction to a negative test tends to be relief.

They aren't really the same and to be honest it would be better if it was explicit and both were included. I seem to recall such a commercial already exists, but am too lazy to find it.

Edit: oh, it was posted in another comment Clear Blue did just that in 2021

It should still be pretty obvious what the results were, as "OMG I'm pregnant!!!" and "ohthankgod I'm not pregnant" are two very different expressions.

9

Nah, you just need art direction. Show someone waiting for the test. They look anxious. Show their stereotyped hourglass timer finish counting, they pick up the test, read the unshown result, close their eyes and give a "not anxious anymore" smile while they take a deep breath, the camera panning up and over towards a sunny window just as their reaction expression hints at showing.

You're not selling pregnant or not pregnant. You're selling not worrying or knowing. So you don't need to convey the emotion of the result, just the emotion of "no longer anxious to find out".

If they have a drink or a multivitamin afterwards is aside from what you're selling.

Maybe a little bit of both? After all, the target demographic for pregnancy tests include both those that are, and those that aren't trying to get pregnant.

The ad would be memorable and hilarious if it showed both couples celebrating.

9

Or a positive test and they're panicking and crying lol

4

I'd venture a guess that many more women are relieved when it's negative, than thrilled when it's positive.

26

I mean, ymmv. People trying to get pregnant will be going through tests a lot faster than people who are on contraception or simply celibate. Accidental pregnancies are a lot rarer today than they were even a few decades ago.

I feel like I’ve seen an ad that said something along the lines of “whatever result you’re hoping for, we can get it sooner and more accurately than blah blah” and it showed several different (happy/relieved) reactions to the results without clearly stating what the results were

20

And walking out of an abortion clinic with a spring in their step and the promise of a bright future without an unwanted child ruining their life

19

Well a lot of women don’t necessarily celebrate it—fetuses have to be aborted for many reasons and come with many emotions. But I think you’ve got the spirit.

25
lemmy.world

yeah, i don't know anyone who has had an abortion lightly, dude, but build your scarecrows and fight them

Oh,

It's you.

The person who is more intelligent than everyone else in the world

I thought I'd blocked you, because you're unpleasant, and also nowhere near as clever as you'd like to think you are

Oh well, I'll get around to it eventually

But congrats on missing the point. It's quite cute, especially given how highly educated you are and how stupid everyone else is

Also, suck my farts, you shut-in loser

i am very very worried that an austistic troll that was so dysfunctional this is the only social network they're allowed on considers me a shut-in loser

Imdeed! Sometimes real life is the best commercial! Right?

the best commercial for me was looking at those annoying kids who do all types of selfish and destructive shit for the most nonsensical and sometimes even laughable reasons...

And those kids who accidentally have a kid and end up raising them terribly or throwing the responsibility over to the grandparents....

And even myself (ya I wasmt the best kid truth be told ) ....

Or those horror stories from women (and even men too) who end up regretting their child even though their region practically banned abortions and made birth controls and sterilizations very restrictive....

I went out of my way to skip commercials when I was a kid and now that Im an adult, so I highly doubt a commercial would have helped to convince me to get the vasectomy I got lol.

Real life and the regretful parents I observed o were the 'commercial' and it was very effective lol.

1

Wanting better representation in ads is a desire I can't relate to at all. Because fuck ads, I'd go out of my way to avoid knowing what content they contain at all.

Though this does bring to mind some condom commercials from back before I effectively removed most advertisements from my life.

lemmy.world

Don't they already do this?

I've definitely seen one that was 2 pictures. 1 a couple, obviously hoping for a positive. The other a lone teen/20s girl, obviously hoping for a negative. The caption was along other lines of "Here's hoping for the result you want."

7
lemmy.world

Eh, that still kind of fits the narrative of "she should be a baby incubator but she should've waited til marriage so the man will support her"

More that a couple in a committed relationship can choose to become parents. It's an unfortunate fact of biology that it must be the woman involved carrying the baby.

4
lemmy.world

A committed relationship can also choose to celebrate a negative test, a single woman can also celebrate a positive one

2

True, but trying to fit that in an advert will never work. Stereotypes exist for a reason, they are a quick and dirty way of transmitting a lot of background information (for better or for worse).

2

Wouldn't that be more effective for a birth control pill commercial.

5
lemmy.zip

you shouldn't need a commercial for that lol.

commercials have traditionally been trying to sell you the idea that the product will improve your life somehow. you'll gain wealth, class, friends or just have a good time.

a baby gives you none of those things. in fact, the pregnancy test commercial is one of the few that deviates from the norm. whoa! look how excited we are that we have another mouth to feed and have to endure the stench of poop for 4 years!

3
lemmy.world

a baby gives you none of those things.

Wait, what? Nobody has ever gained wealth through the success of a child, class status through having a large family, friends made through a child's social network, or a good time with their kids?

5
lemmy.world

Ok well I can assure you that MOST people who had kids have not obtained ANY those things from their kids or their kids' efforts.

Happy People Have Children: Choice and Self-Selection into Parenthood

You're wrong, but for a counter- intuitive reason. People who are happy are more likely to have kids. And then these people continue to be happier on average than their childless peers. But most likely because they have the excess time and resources to pursue having children.

Thanks to contraception, children are a consequence of happiness rather than a cause.

2
lemmy.world

"Thanks to contraception , children ARE NOW a consequence of happiness rather than a cause" is what you mean to say right?

Also thanks. That was an interesting read.

1

children ARE NOW

Modern pharmaceutical contraception has been around for over 50 years

Also thanks. That was an interesting read.

It's kinda what you'd expect, given trends in the middle class. But nice to have numbers rather than just vibes to go on

2
lemmy.world

I think the taboo aspect here is that it would imply sex can be something done for fun rather than procreation.

2

ya and the overlords DEFINITELY dont want that.

Think of those poor poor widdle billionaires , wont you!? Who will give them more slaves , if we dont ? 🥺

1

I can't say I recall any pregnancy test commercial. Is this an american an thing?

2

my only problem with this is that commercial on screen shouldnt be whst you use to decide MASSIVE changes in your life like havign a kid or not having a kid

Real life is typically its own commercial . A person simply has to pay enough attention to those people in their lives and their environments around them and do enough soul-searching within themselves and theyll start to see these 'commercials' all around them all the time. Its a really interesting 'experiment' I would highly recommend👍🏿

Thats how I learned I trily dont see today's world as being fit to give birth to a child in. Its just....too...., greedy, fucked up, and genoc1dal.

2

They do. I have seen a few of them that include someone showing relief at a negative result.

2
lemmy.ca

but.........women......can make babies. do you mean by force? that's a different story.

-5
lemmy.ca

well if we want humanity to live they kinda must make babies. i mean i dont want humans to die off

-3
lemmy.world

....he thinks that a species with 9 billion subjects can ever 'die off' ... Looool!

also humans are one of the most speciocidal species to ever exist. Do you really think us dying off would be a bad outcome for the other species of this planeyt?

....Welp my job here is done. I bid you a goodnight. I dont think Ill be replying anymore.

5
lemmy.ca

well if you are saying women shouldn't be incubators, then how else are we going to create more humans?

-2

By not being a hyperbolic, obtuse, idiot twat dumbass fuck who is genuinely that fucking stupid.

Do you wear floaties when you eat soup?

Congratulations on the cult.

You can be both child free and respect other people’s decisions to have children. I get that it feels like the reverse doesn’t happen. Hey, that’s why this comm exists. However once you make it us v them, you’re a cult or at least on your way to be one.

what about this post is disrespectful or “us vs them”?

are people not allowed to be happy for their own test results?

If it's a drive by, you'd stop circling around to continue commenting. You'd get notifications that folks have responded, but you'd just continue driving past and not reply further.

This isn't a drive by, this is a cul-de-sac that you keep driving around in circles instead of just leaving. A cul-de-sac that you actively made the decision to pull into when you could've just kept driving.

15

we also do uhhh 'other things' to blow off steam here too but luckily we dont have to worry about a child after

3

Showing women it's okay and normal to be relieved at not being pregnant means you're in a cult?

You realize this sentiment makes you seem like a breeder cult whacko yourself

16

I get were your coming from, but this post isn't the issue.

Back when I was on Reddit, the child free subreddit started to become a echo chamber for child hate. I even got banned for calling out the unnecessary hatred. As a result a new child free subreddit split off. This one still promoted child free and help people find places that would perform surgeries.

This post isn't doing anything to promote hate. Like I said, I get what you're trying to say, but you're saying on the wrong post.

13

Way to tell us you’re a thin skinned little bitch without telling us you’re a thin skinned little bitch.

4

You can be both child free and respect other people’s decisions to have children.

No shit, that's what most of us do here.
