It appears to have started as an earthquake, which caused an ice-rock avalanche, which caused the river to flood. I don't know that we have the technology to predict that combo.
That’s only half true, we can somewhat predict earthquakes but it requires burying dozens tubes in the ground along the entire fault line and then monitoring them for torsional stress changes, and then replacing them every so often as they over stress. So pretty much there’s like two faults in the world that are monitored like that.
Could you share a study proving this method did manage to predict earthquakes? Measuring the stress is relevant information but it's not yet predicting the occurence of an earthquake, unless there's an accurate prediction model based on it, and I don't think we have one so far.
In the Midwest USA, we have so many tornado warnings that most people ignore them until they actually hear one coming. Sure you could have a warnings but now that I moved to the West Coast there's tsunami warnings but most of them are duds. Eventually people just stop giving a fuck until the actual thing happens.

It's an earthquake, flood and building collapse all at the same time. If the building you were in didn't crush and or pummel you to death, you're now caught in a tsunami full of debris which assumes you are able to somehow swim and breathe. This isn't a lazy river. You're going to get pushed under, pinned, crushed.
I don't mean to be a downer. But the low death count is not hope here, it's logistics.
One of the most morbidly hilarious parts of human duality is just how incredibly durable/delicate we are. In one moment you'll see people surviving the most apocalyptic shit, and in the next you'll see someone trip over a rug, hit their head, and die.
So while the death count will for sure be higher than what's currently being reported, individual deaths still can't just be assumed.

We can't predict earthquakes, we can only do some vague probabilities based on statistics.
