Medieval people had bathhouses & did not all die before 35...
Context: This comic is poking fun at how movies and TV shows love to make medieval people look filthy and miserable. The director in the panel literally adds a bucket of 'pre-shit manure' to make the scene look 'medieval enough'. In reality, people in the Middle Ages had bathhouses, washed their hands, and didn't all die at 35. It's a jab at how Hollywood ignores actual history for a grim aesthetic.

How come these avifs (from piefed.social) never embed properly on my lemmy.world home page, so I can't click the thumbnail to expand them? I always have to click through to view the image.
I wonder this as well
I guess we just downvote to discourage people from doing it.
I'm not certain they're aware. Wouldn't be effective if they aren't.
You're not wrong, but admittedly I don't know what else to do as the comment didn't get a reply from OP.
In theory, they may notice that their .avif posts don't do as well and switch to .png or .jpg or whatever Lemmy treats as something that can be thumbnailed even if they don't know why their .avif posts do poorly.
You're absolutely right, the majority of people were dead by age 10 (but those who did survive childhood also lived a lot longer than peple think).
Mexico : Piss filter :: Medieval : shit filter
Eastern Europe and Russia: grey filter
Also waste was collected, urine was used in the textile industry and shit as fertilizer.
Furthermore beer was generally the main drink, but not because water was tainted. Water is essentieel for existence, and keeping a clean water supply was very important. Poisoning a well was a capital offense.
Beer was better preservable in barrels then water, and more interesting in flavor. In a world with little choice (no coffee, tea or soda) it's not strange it was preferred by many.
Yet it's s pervasive myth that beer was the only healthy option.
Thank you for saying this, I get sick of this one. Also I think most of what people were drinking historically was more “small beers” like modern kvass or kombucha with 1-2% alcohol. People weren’t just getting fucked up all the time.
Yeah, I just finished writing another comment in this thread that breaks down part of that myth in more detail. But it's pervasiveness is so extreme, just like the 'flat eath' myths and general medieval ignorance and cruelty.
The alchohol content also meant it was sterile, and it was much weaker than modern beer so they weren't sloshed all the time.
Not true. The amount of alcohol required to reliably kill bacteria is higher than most spirits you can get at the store.
IPA's (or India pale ales) came about because most beer spoiled from bacteria in the time it took to reach India (from England). Brewers started adding more hops because it acted as a preservative, and the new beer style was called IPA after the route that created it
Not exactly. Mutliple bacteria thrive in alcoholic beverages (certainly sub 20% abv) when exposed to air (there were no air-tight storage solutions yet). The alcohol they made was far from sterile, as it would have been kept in barrels and they are ideal places for colonies to hide and be rekindled. Luckily most of the bacteriae that form in that manner are actually not unhealthy (like vinegar or pediococcus (feet bacerium)) or too bad tasting. If you look up Belgian wild ales you'll find a whole amount of people who go crazy for those kind of beers.
The brilliant part is that the algae and bacteriae that make water taste nasty when put in a wooden barrel, make beer taste better, hence me saying it keeps better. And the alcohol content would be less. But people drank a lot of water too. It's free and falls from the air and from streams and doesn't involve boiling. It's way to convenient and way too important for people to ignore.
Futhermore, you need good water to make good beer. Almost every brewery will praise their wellwater.
Who's that then?
Must be a king
How d'you know 'e's a king eh?
He 'asn't got shit all o'er 'im
Oh yeh, right
Immediately before this:
Ooh Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here.
pre-shit? pigshit
Pre-shit would just be food innit
Or bile.
Details are sometimes important.
Seriously, did ai make this post? I don't see how a human could make that particular type of mistake.
Yes. Look at post history for this user
Well, auto correct friend. It tried to correct 'firend' to 'fires' just now for me. A single misspelling isn't AI evidence. Humans fuck up too and in context, any auto correct would assume pre over pig before a hyphen.
AI is awful but don't create a Spector of it.
Looking at OPs history, every post has context like this one and all of them share the same structure, and some weird choice of words. This isn’t strong enough to prove AI was used, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.
That said, this will be a hot take but that’s fine with me. Beats not having context at all
PS: the potentially ironic username of the OP didn’t escape my notice
Depending on time period and location, some terms and conditions apply, scapegoating of minorities may encourage filth.
They were filthy and miserable, compared to modern people, obviously not to the extent of TV portrayals, but they weren't actually able to take shower every day or have 5 day work week and work days of ~8 hours.

Whereas full time work (in the US anyway) amounts to 2,080 hours annually.
This is a myth, FYI. Those times are kinda equivalent to taxes+rent. After those 1440 h for your local lord, you still need to run your own farm to feed yourself.
