Be warned - Winter is coming
With the meteorological fall a mere two weeks away, I thought I would share a maple leaf from one of the ones growing in my yard as a reminder the cold winds and long dark nights are nearing for those of us in the northern hemisphere.
Here in the far northern reaches of Minnesota, the next month's forecast holds early September frosts for us. Though they are long range forecasting a warmer winter this year. A bit easier than the many days of -0F we had last year I hope. My old bones can feel the season's change coming.
My dogs can already smell the fall days afield in pursuit of a ruffed grouse or two. And maybe a sharptail or two also if my repaired knee is up to that.

You're why the phrase don't shoot the messenger had to be invented.
I live in northern California where is been ridiculously hot and fiery. I could kiss this messenger.
People seldom want the truth don't they.
But it's still 90F+ here, and all the forests are still burning.
The forest does not care about the temperature when it burns.
If you pay attention to the time the sunsets, or by its path in the sky, you can get a sense of the momentum of the seasons change. Already over 2 hours of light are gone, and more leave each day.
That works. But I can feel and smell it in the air. Decades of being outside in all conditions it teaches you that.
Roughly two minutes daily, waxing or waning.
Yeah its about 2 or 3 minutes in the fall and spring but closer to 1 minute during the winter and summer (here atleast) Part of the reason winter and summer feel so long is that the days aren't changing as much.
100 degrees in Denver yesterday sure as hell didn’t feel like oncoming fall. Hope rests eternal… I guess…
It's 112 here today. Fall doesn't arrive until about mid-November where I'm from.
AZ, Vegas, or Palm Springs? Lol
🏜️🌵 AZ, Valley of the Sun
Right there with ya
Ooof that’s brutal. It used to be in the mid-70s - low-80s here about this time of year. Not anymore. I just hope we have winter this year. It barely snowed last year.
It was partly sunny an barely reached 70 here.
Warned? Winter is the best time of the year!
I'm with you! Podium places for winter (1), autumn(2) and spring(3)
Spring is short here. We often have killing frosts in to early June. So it feels like we go from fall, winter, summer. With the winter snows and cold lasting for 6 months. Many times I have gone deer hunting in early November and there is 6" of snow on the ground and the morning temperature is single digits.
It's hard to sit in an open deer stand for hours like that.
I do agree with you. But most people whinge about the cold and snow.
Hottest day of the year.
I suppose, in the sense that it can only get colder.
The sun is extracting one of it's last attempts of burning you. But it will give way in time.
Bring it! Summer is way overrated!
So you say now. Just wait until the highs for the next week are no more the +10F and the wind is howling down out of the northwest and the wind chill is -30F.
But that probably won't be this year.
It didn’t used to be. Then climate change happened.
It's 27.3 @ 82% humidity here. I want to be cutting my grass, but it's still so wet it just clogs my mower. I'm hoping the sun will burn off some of the moisture, but we're not meant to get much sun today. It's been such a weird year, I have no idea if it's going to go up into the 30s again or if we'll start seeing it drop toward autumn temps.
Rejoice for autumn is almost here :)
I am! The feel of the air is amazing isn't it?
Yet, having autumn weather before GamesCom feels wrong. You're supposed to get cooked in gc week >:)
Nah, this feels right. Don't hold it back.
Winter is a mindset
Winter is a playground. A chance to rest. A chance to feel alive.
The leaves start falling here in a couple of weeks. In a couple of months, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for some 80+ degree stretches. Yard cleanup while it's still shorts weather sucks balls. And not in the pleasant way.
In a couple of months there will be ice on the lake and snow on the ground.
We had a warm ass fall/winter last year in Washington State. Better be colder this year
Spooky season is upon us
My birthday in 2 months away yet. So not even close.
Going to be cold and wet here, when it's usually mild and moderate precip.
Out of all the weather, cold and wet is the one my old bones no longer tolerate. The arthritis and aches cannot be tamed anymore.
Same for me, especially very low altitude. Warm and wet isn't much better.
