And if you don't want to read 200 books that each have less than that many pages, I'd recommend the Elemist Chronicles, probably my favorite book in that setting and much more substantial than mainline series books.
Has anyone edited those to cut out the redundant explanation sections in every book? It's not too bad when you're not binging them, but good lord these were not made to be read right after another.
You know you are allowed to skip pages right? Lol or is it worked into the full story somehow?
They sometimes work it into the story a lot. You can usually skip the first 3 pages or so no problem, but other times you have skim through to find relevant details.
Also when the aliens show up you get like a half page to a page describing them (each of them) as if you haven't read the same thing 30 times.
I get why it's there, they were written to be accessible for anyone who just picked up book 42 at a yard sale or whatever.
Edit, also the descriptions of every goddamn animal, their instincts, and the morphing process of each. Granted, those actually differ a bit because the process is different everytime, but there's only so many ways to describe hairy Fly legs exploding from your chest.
Edit:Might as well make it a drinking game at this point, but also explaining what happened to Tobias every book, explaining Tom in at least Jake's books.

Seriously, the only redeeming quality is how whimsical the Wizarding World is, the actual story is bullshit, and since the whimsy goes away after the third book in favor of "Edgy Bullshit" for books 4-7, there isn't a lot of whimsy to enjoy
I have the theory that if it wasn't for the movies, the series wouldn't have gotten a fraction of the popularity it has.
Specially the music. I think the score did most of the heavy lifting in giving the movies that "whimsy magical feeling"
Indeed, Harry Potter is marketing hype that's it, as a kid I only read Sorcerer's Stone cover to cover, then I moved onto Redwall.

Any recommendations on books? Back then I thought the Harry Potter books (well, the 3 that I've read) where neat and I'd like to read something similar again :D

If you haven't read them yet, the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett fills a similar fantasy space, but with an excellent dose of British humor mixed in. The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are often recommended as the primary starting point, but there's a handful of parallel storylines with their own "starting points". Going Postal is one of my favorites.
Second this. There's a bunch of really good stand alone ones if you want to dip your toe in, small gods is excellent
I will never not recommend Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, I would suggest starting with the Tiffany Aching series, they're YA but might give you the vibe you want. Alternatively, any of the novels set in Unseen University (or focused around the wizards) might also be worth a look. I wouldn't recommend starting with the Light Fantastic or the Colour of Magic though, just because they're early books and he hadn't got his writing style down yet. Maybe Unseen Academicals or Equal Rites?

I wouldn’t put the Eddings on there without a huge warning that they were convicted child abusers - to be fair they managed to keep it very quiet while they were alive.

These all quickly pulled me into their fantasy worlds and I read through them pretty quickly.
Seconding Mistborn, those books pulled me in like very few others have.
If you want fantasy speaking to a young audience I recommend The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett, and if you like it the rest of the Tiffany Aching series
Alternatively I've heard good things about The Wizards of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuinn (I've only read her sci fi, which while famously good isn't in any way a replacement for Harry Potter)

Came across this yesterday. Haven't read any of these but here's a small list for both kids and adults, courtesy of sophiebeerdraws.
Not having Ursula Le Guin while having BrandoSando on there is criminal. Go read the Earthsea books.
I've had Ursula Le Guin's books on my list for a while now, personally. Although the impression that I get is that Le Guin is in her own tier that others should be compared to, up there with Tolkien with Anne Rice.
Haven't read any of the books in that screenshot myself but I was assuming they're all that Potter / Narnia / Alice kind of idea of a chosen one in a magical land, mostly for kids and young adults.
Alternatives should really be a standard for when shit goes down on any media.
More of an off the beaten path recommendation, but The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy was a really fun YA fantasy novel about a trans girl who joins a coven of witches.
Besides all the good recommendations here already, I'd like to add the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb
