Young people more likely to hold hostile attitudes towards women, study finds
The first-of-its-kind Australian study, funded by the Office of National Intelligence, surveyed 1,122 young people aged 13-17 and 2,307 adults, to compare attitudes on women, gender equality, online influences and violent extremism. The study also surveyed more than 500 Australian school teachers about their experiences of misogyny and extremism in classrooms.
Study author Dr Sara Meger, from the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Arts, said the findings were concerning.
“These attitudes were far more prevalent among the young people surveyed, and of everything we measured, these hostile views were the single strongest predictor of support for violent extremism,” Dr Meger said.
Among boys aged 13-17 the study found:
- 31.8 per cent believed that attempts to give equal opportunities to women in Australia have gone too far
- 30.1 per cent believed men have more of a right to a job than women when jobs are scarce
- 24.7 per cent believed feminism is damaging to our society and should be resisted with violence if necessary.
On several measures, teenage girls shared similar views to adult men surveyed. Gen Z women were twice as likely as Millennial women, and four times as likely as Gen X women, to agree that marriage entitles a husband to sex with his wife, even if she does not want to.
The study found these attitudes were associated with the online content young people were consuming.
“Engagement with ‘manosphere' content, pornography and online dating showed the strongest links to misogynistic views,” Dr Meger, said.

This is too accurate and my little brother is becoming very misogynistic just because he had a bad experience with his first girlfriend. The apathy my family have over this disgusts me, when I was his age I'd have been screamed at for no reason just for existing while he can literally say the most terrible thing but it's okay because "he's just a boy, he'll grow out of it"
Poor kid has no shot at growing into a decent person :(
Millennials just surrounded by computer illiterate, sexist, right-wingers🤷
It's the attitudes of Gen Z women I find most surprising and disappointing. What did my generation do that so many girls and young women believe men have a right to their bodies? I know the manosphere has gotten much, much worse but I didn't think girls were getting red pilled by it.
Oh this post has upset some Lemmings. Interesting.
JFC man. Almost a third of people surveyed... I really hope there was just some inadvertent selection bias, cause I really don't want to believe these numbers are indictive of the population as a whole
People really need to get their kids away from this content
But I keep hearing all our problems will die off with the Boomers
yeah. about that.
Children in general are cruel and have to learn not to be. This doesn’t surprise me.
There's this cool new thing we do called reading the article. It helps to avoid saying something that has nothing to do with the subject.
readong the aclictr what now?
;-)
I read perfectly when you brought in the unnecessary toxic reddit energy.
...So you didn't read the article?
And now a block. Shame, seems I’ve given you several up votes in the past.
Oh no! Anyway...
That's the sticky part unfortunately.
Well that’s why there’s a lot of trashy people in the world. They never learned otherwise.
Children*****
Young people is a perfectly fine descriptor for teenagers.
