The Answer to Falling Birth Rates Isn’t More Pressure on Women

As the current administration and pro-natalist groups continue to panic about women delaying motherhood, we must reject the “alarming fertility statistics.” If women choose to have children, that decision should be guided by their own goals, circumstances, and desires, not by pressures to solve a manufactured problem.

At the end of the day, supporting families means creating conditions in which people can make reproductive decisions freely. The solution to declining birth rates is not limiting women’s choices, but ensuring they have the resources and support needed to build the lives and families they want.

The Death of Millennial Feminism

https://archive.ph/lWbc6

Lindy West has unwittingly written the obituary for an era.

Lindy west is the most successful feminist writer of her (and my) generation. In her pomp at Jezebel, she mastered both viral takedowns—sorry, Love Actually—and confessional writing. She embraced adjectives that were meant to demean her: loudfatshrill. When Lindy shouted, women listened.

That background is what makes the publication of her new memoir, Adult Braces, such a cultural moment. Adult Braces is many things: a paean to the varied landscapes of America, an advert for #vanlife, a reminder to be grateful that your partner hasn’t talked you into a throuple with a much thinner woman. It is also the tombstone for Millennial Feminism—that swirling brew of Media Twitter, blog snark, the Great Awokening, whaling on Lena Dunham, fat positivity, and boring straight people identifying as queer through accounting tricks. To read Lindy West is to gaze backwards in time, to an era when it was acceptable to write “welp!” in copy.

Ahead of International Women's Day, several WeChat public accounts advocating for women's and minority rights were shut down

Ahead of International Women's Day, several WeChat public accounts advocating for women's and minority rights were shut down

Ahead of International Women's Day, multiple WeChat public accounts advocating for women's and minority rights were shut down. According to incomplete statistics, the banned accounts include: "Xiaowusheng Psychology," an organization focusing on mental health for sexual minorities; "Dongxia Primavera," which addresses feminist and leftist youth issues; "Letters from Two Strangers," a Gen Z feminist account; "HerStoryNow" run by grassroots feminist groups, "自由娜拉NORA" (Freedom NORA), an independent media outlet focusing on human trafficking and the rights of people with mental disabilities, "Belonging Space," a team dedicated to the mental health of women and sexual minorities, "流放地" (Place of Exile) advocating for sexual minority rights, and "艾大荀," an account operated by female public welfare activists.

Such mass bans seem to occur annually, like some kind of sacrificial ritual. My recollection is that the first instance happened during IDAHOTB in 2021. Back then, on WeChat's interface, banned public accounts would display as "Untitled Public Account(未命名公众号)." In response, some members of the LGBTQ+ community added the prefix "Untitled(未命名)" to their online aliases as a form of protest. Yet now people have even grown accustomed to it.

My post on c/unpopularopinion was removed for criticizing the abuse of a porn star

My post here was removed for lacking context; I am confused on what context is lacking.

I also find it very odd that the sole moderator of this community is a man. This is not to say that man can’t speak on feminist issues - I identify as a man of course, but I would think that such a community would have at least one female moderator.

For as much context as I can give:

Heather Hays is a porn star with learning disabilities. She has made multiple concerning posts about being coerced to take things down from her Twitter, and I am not sure that she is able to consent to what she is doing.

Reddit is filled with hundreds of horrifying comments calling her the r-slur. Really, Reddit has hundreds of horrifying comments about all kinds of porn stars, but the theme with her in particular is that aspect.

I posted about Heather Hays on unpopular opinion, and it was removed with barely any explanation. Someone suggested that I mark it as “NSFW” - when I reposted it and marked it as NSFW, it was again taken down and I was banned.

I think it would be reasonable to ask instances like Lemmy NSFW to ban her content. I think there needs to be a lot more consideration about what kind of industry one is funding when one views content on Pornhub or the other large porn sites - MindGeek has a monopoly on essentially all the major ones, and MindGeek has made money knowingly on CSAM.

It was at a local debate competition, where the motion was that only a women's liberation movement could bring about all round progress in society. It was here that I learnt about the free nipple

It was at a local debate competition, where the motion was that only a women's liberation movement could bring about all round progress in society. It was here that I learnt about the free nipple movement. Can someone please tell me more about this ? Is it something similar to the bra burning feminism ??

Ukraine Sending Pregnant Women to the Front Lines

This video discusses a New York Times article reporting on pregnant Ukrainian women serving on the front lines of the war against Russia. The hosts express disbelief and criticism, questioning the necessity and ethics of allowing pregnant women to serve in combat roles, highlighting the lack of adequate support and potential dangers to both the women and their unborn children.

Key Points:

  • Pregnant Women in Combat: The video focuses on the article's portrayal of pregnant Ukrainian soldiers fighting for their country and their children's future.
  • Ovulation App in the Trenches: A particularly striking detail from the article is highlighted: a soldier using an ovulation app while in a trench on the front lines.
  • Recruitment Challenges: Ukraine's military is facing difficulties recruiting young men, leading to a greater reliance on women, including pregnant women, who are all volunteers.
  • Lack of Support: The video points out the lack of adequate support for pregnant soldiers, including ill-fitting uniforms and insufficient prenatal care.
  • Historical Context: A comparison is made to Nazi Germany, noting that they would not have allowed pregnant women in combat due to their eugenics policies, suggesting Ukraine's situation indicates desperation.
  • Maternity Leave: Ukrainian soldiers are allowed 126 days of paid maternity leave, which is more than in the United States, but they also have the option of three years unpaid leave.
  • Sexism in the Military: The video acknowledges the sexism that exists in the Ukrainian military, which can make it difficult for women to return to service after giving birth.
  • Dr. Vita Marenko's Perspective: A doctor who cares for pregnant soldiers notes that their pregnancies differ from civilians' in that they provide "more purpose," reminding them what they are fighting for.
  • Personal Stories: The video shares stories of women like Olia, a combat medic who continued to serve while pregnant and plans to reenlist after giving birth.
  • Call for Surrender: The video concludes with agreement to Dave DeCamp's statement, "if you have pregnant women on the front lines, it's time to surrender."
