Did fox really report that? I mean I would believe it because fox viewers are absolute morons but I can't tell whats satire anymore

70

Seems completely plausible, as part of their rhetoric to turn people against drag queen story hour.

40

I found the same image from April, 2024. A few articles about it from this week, but also a few here and there, including one post on 9Gag (wow, haven't heard that name in a looong time), from April 2024.

So, if it's real, it's not recent.

24

They're acting like they're so concerned for the integrity of public libraries, but this is transparently an attempt to manufacture consent to defund public libraries.

It's so obvious if you pay any attention at all, they've been telegraphing this for months if not years...

sh.itjust.works

I was wondering how long it would take them to attack libraries. FREE books, internet access, and air conditioning?

55

More specifically, true information is communism. Don't you know history is what the white man says it is? Google has already updated their search results to reflect revisionist history. Once the libraries are gone, that's it.

9

Wait, now you can use Libby and borrow books from libraries within hundreds of miles or you....for free? Better end that shit we don't want people learning anything. Statistically the higher your education level the more likely you are to be a Democrat atheist.

3

Books?

I can’t read. I go to my library for free comic books, access to digital streaming services, and printing.

Libraries are the last sanctuary for the poor and the lost. It used to be the churches. Save all libraries everywhere and build way more.

41

That's probably why they are attaching them. Also libraries promote learning.

17
lemmy.world

The reason fox news is able to make wild claims about libraries is because its viewers haven't stepped foot in a library since they were in elementary school.

38
sh.itjust.works

Is that like a "library plus" subscription? Or do I just go to the counter with my card and ask for a drug fueled orgy?

36

When you join your local Friends of the Library chapter, make sure you upgrade to the Friends with Benefits tier.

19
sh.itjust.works

Oddly specific info maybe, but I've been expressively asked not to dump any organic matter in the dropbox.

You can rent movies and games from the library too! It's totally worth it.

My local library rents specialty tools/pans for baking!

And if you can't physically get there as often as you'd like, most have a great collection of digital resources for ebooks, newspapers, film, etc. etc. that are pretty awesome.

Use ALL of what the library has to offer!

I'm playing Pokémon Ultra Sun while watching season 2 of Once Upon A Time. Checked out both from the library. Love my local library 📚 🐲

Jesse the haunted puppet definitely has tiny little stick legs hidden behind those table legs

Libraries are another example of a purely Socialist concept that is woven into our "Democratic" society, so this is their chance to demonize libraries in their defamation of Socialism before the Midterms. Museums are next.

When they do that, remind them that nothing is more Socialist than the Fire Department, which was originally a private operation, until the citizens made it a socialist municipal mainstay. Do they want to get rid of the Fire Department, just because it is Socialist? How about public parks? How about State or National Parks?

23
lemmy.ca

They absolutely do want to get rid of state and national parks, though. There's valuable minerals on some of that land, and other land that can be repurposed for grazing cattle. They're whittling it away as fast as they can already.

13

And the only reason the minerals there are valuable is because they've sucked the life out of all the available zones.

All to drive a lifestyle that was impracticle and unaffordable from the start.

They also want to build on it. Billionaires need someplace nice for their 10th home away from us poors

I'd really like to see the capitalist Fire Brigade, if only to see Terry Pratchett proven right once again.

Ankh-Morpork no longer had a fire brigade. The citizens had a rather disturbingly direct way of thinking at times, and it did not take long for people to see the rather obvious flaw in paying a group of people by the number of fires they put out. The penny really dropped shortly after Charcoal Tuesday.

― Terry Pratchett, Jingo

lemmy.today

The original capitalist fire brigade were local companies that a business owner or homeowner could pay to come and put out a fire. They were given a cast iron plaque, called a "Fire Mark," to put on their building, next to the door. When the fire brigade showed up, and there was no Fire Mark, they'd just watch the building burn down, unless the owner paid immediately.

When cities decided that was a terrible system, those fire brigade companies morphed into the first insurance companies, and they've been parasites on our lives ever since.

weirdly i was actually thinking about this the other day and i don’t think it’d go back to that state of affairs. i think we already have an example of what it’s turn into: US emergency departments

they can’t refuse to treat anyone but someone’s on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars of inflated costs. if you don’t have insurance, you’re in debts

i imagine it’d be the same with a non-socialist fire department: they show up to a building and put it out as normal and can’t refuse… 95% of people have fire insurance, and if you don’t you’re in fire debt that costs more than the building they “saved” - and then it still probably has to get torn down because of the damage

and then they’d still justify it saying that they protected the buildings around you which you’d be responsible for repairing if they didn’t put the fire out so it’s not even about your building

1

Pretty sure the Trump admin has been making cuts to the national forest service, the supposed goal is to weaken oversight and boost resource extraction. I could easily see them thinking a forest burning down is a great thing - more room for data centers.

So yes, they probably would try to get rid of fire departments. Fortunately, though, most of them are locally funded - so they don't really get to make that decision on the federal level.

Ask yourself a simple question: What will make you more money?

1

Once again, the unhinged Right's imagined Left (and Center) is infinitely more based than the reality.

23
lemmy.world

No homeless people jacking off to porno at your library? Must be nice.

8

You know this isn't true because Republicans want to defund them lol

NOTE: You still have to be very quiet, so don't forget the ball gag.

they got out a special one for me that just said "DEAR GOD BRING THEM BACK IN ONE PIECE" and was made out of brimstone, why?

oh gods what was the THEM

I know critical thinking isn't something a fox news viewer has... but cmon? They can't be this stupid?

15

They can’t be this stupid?

You know the answer to that question.

10

Decades of relentless gaslighting is an immensely powerful form of brainwashing.

When it's combined with a nearly perfectly closed bubble, very few escape with their sanity and capacity for critical thinking intact.

7
lemmy.world

I mean just look at the high gas prices (which are still dirt cheap compared to germany) and people don't realize it is Trumps doing. Or how he slashes Medicaid. Things that are really perceivable in your everyday live and not abstract politics.

So yeah, totally believable that a lot of those people fall for this kinda news.

5

I work at a nfp hospital and had to hold off on some house reno. Anytime anyone I even suspect is leaning not-left I always say *well that project has been put on hold. With all the Medicare/Medicaid cuts and that being the bulk of our reimbursement...no raises."

Some have a semblance of critical thinking and realize that those cuts actually hurt people while others gaze blankly

1

They're itching for a reason to hate on anyone that might have learned anything because it proves to them that clever=bad.

5

Think of the money they can save, and give tax cuts to the Sociopathic Oligarchs. No sense wasting knowledge on people who are only going to die in slave labor camps anyway.

2

Now they come for libraries, the last source of true information. Once those are gone, history is what they say and reality is what they say.

15
piefed.zip

I've been to some libraries where it's for whatever reason full of people either drunk or high causing a ruckus. Then they sometimes fight, leave needles and stuff behind and yell at random people. The library has hired/asked the mall to get more security, but the library has already got a reputation and people have started avoiding it. It sucks, there's very few nice, calm and quiet community places around.

The situation improved this summer since the drunk or high people spend more time outside but now the close by park has been dug up, so they're back to the library.

15
semreply
piefed.blahaj.zone

Yeah I've seen a library that manages to mediate between its homeless polulation and other patrons, but i could see fox news trying to gin up a moral panoc about libraries rather than have compassion for the homeless.

4

It's not really homeless people that do that here, it's more just generally addicts. Still sad and a poor situation for everyone.

Most libraries aren't like that though, this particular library just has it bad. I'm not exactly sure why

3

How would anyone from Fox "News" know this? They haven't been to a library since they burned the one in Alexandria down.

15

damn perhaps we should do something about the underlying socioeconomic problems that cause homelessness and antisocial behavior. No? just shuffle them around some more? oh, okay.

11

I don't think we're talking about love here. We are talking about S-E-X in front of the C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N!

Sex Cauldron? I thought they closed that place down!

9

I would definitely patronize the Sex Cauldron

3

Once again, the US is having all of the fun, when we just have plain boring old libraries with books and magazines.

6

Sign me up! lol. I can’t get an erection. I’ve been to my local library a few times, and they have little rooms you can rent for private meetings and whatnot. Definitely heard a couple fuck in one of those, once.

4

That sounds like a moral and ethical failure than a institutional one. It should be rational that you'd want to copulate in a private environment, not where you are likely to be disturbed or outright attacked.

1

I went into my local library high and naked, but they just asked me nicely to leave. :(

2

Fox is going woke now, lol. I think they're talking about Libertarianism though.

2

If whoever is writing the lower thirds for FOX had ever been to a library themselves, they might know that the comma there is totally incorrect...

1

Where would one find one of those appalling dens of iniquity? So one can avoid it, of course.
