As I gain a better understanding of how federated social media works, I just find it even more confusing. This dude appointed himself batman of lemmy, but he's just a single dev of a single frontend. Don't most instances have multiple frontends? Even if a secret block list was the key to getting lemmy to finally go mainstream (it's not), implementing it at a frontend level is simultaneously both way too wide and way too small of a net. If tesseract was the only way anyone could access lemmy, maybe a secret block list could actually change the winds, but it's such a small slice of the fediverse. It's like if batman was only beating up jaywalkers and was like "You're welcome, Gotham. The city is saved."

What was the point of any of it? Someone was inevitably going to discover it was happening. There were so many people on the block list. Was he just going to personally defend against the ranks of people he found annoying forever? Keep adding more and more regex as the list grows to multiple thousands of users? They're still on the platform, dude. It's just one filter on one frontend. What the hell are you trying to accomplish?

You nailed it! The impact was minimal. Its so many stupid hoops to get to his frontend. The root issue was keeping it a secret. And that's why everyone was clowning on him, with many users (myself included) wishing we were on that list.

Apparently that broke Admiral cucktits because his secret list of gay lefties didn't make him as cool as Batman. It made him like... Ketchup man or some 4th rate villain with a stupid gimmick, who thinks he's "protecting" Gotham by rubbing ketchup on all the street corners to stop robbers or some dumb shit.

Definitely the actions of a person who should be unquestioningly trusted to be the sole arbiter of determining what is fine and dandy and what goes too far on Lemmy. Totally not indicative of every legitimate concern that every single person opposing this brought up being accurate, surely not!

My favorite reply from him when I called him out in a different thread: "why can't you just let people use their own computers how they choose"

I'm guessing he has never heard the wisdom of not throwing stones in a glass house. The cognitive dissonance is hilarious, though.

10

ugh you're giving me flashbacks of getting autobanned by a bot on one of the main leftist subreddits because I'd once posted in one of the right-wing subs (calling someone out on nazi bullshit).

It's infinitely frustrating to see a community of people who mostly just want a socialized safety net, money out of politics, less inequality and less genocide, get run by exactly the sort of people who seem like they'd be perfectly happy implementing gulags and Stasi on the first day of the revolution.

The disturbing thing is that a LOT of people are like this. The older I get and the more I see of humanity the more it becomes clear most don't mentally age past early teens and many who have big parts of them that don't age past toddler behaviour.

16

As a lemming, this whole drama is categorical censorial bullshit, but also peak comedy because the fuckwad got caught and publicly called on the carpet

As a software engineer, this is stupid implementation, because you can trivially make this a configurable blocklist of strings and regex. It never needed to even be an argument. Which of course means that it was never about the implementation.

As an open source enthusiast, take the software engineer response, but add: and he’s intentionally pushing his (visibly fucked up and warped) worldview and values onto users, and he tried to obfuscate it to be sneaky. That falls in the realm of malware imo - as in, intentionally mutating the functionality of a project with a specific intent of impact on users, and then attempting to hide the evidence. And then he got called out on it, and got super butthurt, and rage quit the whole goddamn platform.

TL;DR: Good fucking riddance.

Did anyone bother to check if that "toxic mode" even existed, or existed prior to the jackass getting caught?

7

Tbh, doesn’t matter.

Dude clearly designed it to be included in his releases in a difficult to detect fashion. That’s “malicious developer” behavior.

In the context of OSS, you design to do , and you set things up to allow users and implementers to customize it as they see fit and necessary. Intentionally hiding opt-out mechanism - let alone shipping with shit you want or need to opt out of is very much a big tech bullshit tactic, and OSS devs who do that are objectively caustic OSS devs. Dude tried to foist his views and sensibilities onto everyone who used his shit in a very, very sneaky fashion

It’s correct and appropriate that he got blackballed from the community.

18
sh.itjust.works

See this kinda thing is exactly why I'm still here. Some guy tried to use his software's popularity to manipulate and censor Lemmy, and it had the exact opposite effect in the end. His software got immediately forked, most instances(that I know of) stopped using/supporting it and the whole thing is getting memed to death so now the entire usernase knows about it and can specifically avoid this guy and all the software he maintains.

When this kind of thing happens on a platform like reddit or some other closed system, we can often suspect and sometimes experimentally prove that some kind of censorship or manipulation is happening, but it is way more difficult to detect and there's little the users can do about it.

Not here.

Here the users have the power, the knowledge, and the motivation to not only find problems like this, but to take collective action against them. You all have just proved it, once again.

Great meme!

I'm watching two users that have been defending him while skirting around the actual problems. Right now, I'm not fully sure if they are alts of his. They aren't active at the same time, as in one stopped commenting a few hours ago and then the other started commenting, which I find suspicious.

They've been called out as possible alts in this post and another tesseract post in this community. Neither have responded to the accusations though, which I also find suspicious lol

And he's still made recent comments on his Kirk account

It's been a consistent play of Trump since even his campaign in 2015-2016. He says something stupid or does something stupid. His defenders say he didn't mean it like that and try to offer nuance or context, and then Trump clarifies that no, the plain meaning of what he said was exactly what he intended.

But yeah, after Hokit disparaged Michelle Obama at White House UFC fight, I had a moment of clarity that the new masculine flex is to discharge your strength to do something awful, something cruel or tasteless or obviously amoral, to demonstrate either that you are beyond the reach of consequences or because you don't care about the consequences. Another recent example is when Trump interfered with the World Cup and cancelled the red card and one-game penalty of Folarin Balogun.

I doubt that it's just manosphere-types emulating Donald Trump, but because this is a thing he specifically does time and again, it's recognizable when other people do it.

1

Not really, insecure people have been doing that for millennia.

8

Is lemmy turning into reddit or something? I just see bits and pieces of this drama, don't really care enough to deep dive in it.. but found out I'm on the "list".

19

no, someone tried to turn it into Reddit using their frontend to try and act like an admin on instances they're not an admin on, acting like an entitled reddit powermod/admin doling out shadowbans; and the fediverse collectively told him to fuck himself.

Most people, I'd think, would consider thousands of other people yelling all at once telling you you've done a tremendously dumb thing, to be a fine moment for self-reflection. AdmiralPatrick is not one of those people.

59
europe.pub

Frankly, my own block list is huge. Mostly keywords, very few users. I would recommend it to everyone. Any social media is unbearable without blocking shit out. Everyone should personalise blocklists to their tastes.

But you can't make this decision for people. This is why I also don't like that some instances defederate a lot of other instances they don't like (and no one tells newbies). There's a niche for pre-populated block lists that are available and curated and transparent (like for ad-blockers).

17

Yeah I think sharing them is a great idea as long as people can opt in or out. Respect people's agency.

I forget where but remember hearing a story once. If I hosted a banger of a party and everyone passes out at my house. But if I got 10 people say yeah Jerry is the one who took a shit in your sink. Well I'm going to be making Jerry clean my fucking sink.

14

The most dumbfounding thing to me is that the list isn't even base64 encoded. Its just sitting in the repo plain-text. I can't decided if its laziness, a lack of data integrity standards, lack of imagination, or if he wanted all this drama one day.

If your free software is borderline malware (which it is because it's intentionally depriving users access to certain information with a deliberate attempt hide that fact from the users) I think people have a right to be harsh.

26
Melllvarreply
startrek.website

If it is malware then harshness is justified, but I'd be willing to debate over the strict definition of malware and whether it technically applies here.

But I don't think most of the harshness we've seen is actually borne of that kind of outrage. Even the OP of this meme says they are not upset and are having a wonderful time.

-21

I never said it's strictly malware, I said borderline malware. It can't be strictly malware because most definitions of malware focus on the malware taking (some or full) control of the system or extracting valuable information, things that generally pose as a direct threat of damage to the end user or system.

But restricting user access to information without the user knowing information is being restricted and taking deliberate steps to hide this is being done in the first place is all malicious behavior. If you asked from a layman if this should be considered malware behavior or not most people would consider this malware behavior, hence borderline malware.

And I don't see how it not being "strictly malware" would change anything. People are outraged by what it is doing and how it is doing it, not by whether it fits the strict definition of malware.
