It is so important to understand the basics at least.
Imagine a not-so-far future where you buy some sweets for your neighbor's children, and after a while, after somebody has found the remains of the packaging of these sweets somewhere in a streets's corner, you get a summons to court because they can prove that you were the buyer of this.

Pigeons.
We domesticated them and then just discarded them once they were no longer "useful" to us. Now people see them as "sky rats" and are generally pretty shit towards them.
I think they are one of the best birds!

When i hear about how usefuo they were in the past i'm always trying to re-domesticste them.
Fun pigeon fact: they can be trained to distinguish MRI scans of people with cancer from ones that don't have cancer.

I will feed them at any opportunity and always have fresh water in my garden available for them (and the other birds).

indoor plumbing
lol. came to say this. hot/cold clean running water and sewer. This is so beyond belief better than most all other modern things. I could live without internet. I could live without electricity. I could technically live without indoor plumbing but im absolutely going to hate it.
I like how so many things are improving and life is really mind-boggling better and more convenient and nicer than it was 20-30 years ago. Food, healthcare, access to knowledge, etc.
But you can't say this that without massive massive blowback, because everyone is convinced of this doomer narrative that everything is worse and getting worse by the day. Like, ok doomer, please ignore all the massive progress. No, let's act like the world is awful and terrible because Netlifx raised their prices $1 per month. it's absurd.
I'm on board with you. Yes, some things are a bit worse, but most things are the total opposite. All I see online anymore are doomers and I just don't have that mindset anymore. Makes most of the internet (Lemmy in particular) unrelatable.
God this is so true. I laugh at the idiots who claim washing machines, cars, TVs etc were all better back in the day.
They might have physically lasted longer but weren’t nearly as efficient or safe as their modern counterparts.

I think you're right. Life is getting better, science and tech wise, but it might be getting stupider too (e.g managers jump the gun in firing someone because they assume a public LLM service will do the job just as well)
yeah im definately in the other you see now. I was just thinking about what was the last thing I can think of that had a significant day to day quality of life improvement and its pretty much the microwave. Don't get me wrong video games, special effects, the internet. They are nice and have conveniences but they really don't raise quality of life.

As I learned in college; cite everything.
Lastase pills. Some people don't know it's a thing. I wouldn't be able to eat so many good food like butter, poutine, cheesecake, yoghurt, nachos.. I know there are alternatives but they are not the same as the real thing.

Bear with me. It's the value of how powerful a new perspective can be. There's a Cohen brothers movie I really like called A Serious Man. It's very funny but has a weighty undertone to it. The main character is trying to figure out his life and what things mean. He is Jewish and hopes that his faith can provide some answers. He makes an appointment with a wise and prominent Rabbi but at the last minute the Rabbi is unavailable and he sees a younger, junior Rabbi instead. He's taken into his small office with one window that looks over a parking lot. As he explains his plight to the Rabbi the Rabbi suggests that, rather than faith providing an answer, it's his perspective that needs to change. The Rabbi looks out the window at the very plain, ordinary, and normal parking lot that no one would give a second thought about and asks him to imagine a visitor, someone who isn't familiar with parking lots, that when seeing something nearly all of us wouldn't give a second thought about, sees something new and magical and wonderous simply because he's seeing it for the first time with new eyes and exclaims look at the parking lot! I find it a very powerful scene. It's one of my favorite movies.
