I jacked off to this scenario just now; the struggle cuddle with the Google Chrome iconogre. Would you like to hear about our lords, Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith, and myself? I also teach the occult.

Hello! Holds up spork. I am Catherine, but you may refer to me as "The Penguin Which Brings Doom." As you can see I tend to behave with incredible randomness. That is why I have come to this place, to meet with random individuals such as myself.

I am 52 years old (though I still hold childlike jolly in my heart) and I like to listen to NPR talk shows with my beloved of the fairer sex (I am of bisexual persuasion, if you do not like it, I will disregard you outright) it is our favorite, as the range of topics can be varied!

She does behave with unpredictable randomness and joy too, however I would like to meet others which exhibit this sort of erratic behavior. The more the merrier, as they say!

I hope to make a lot of great new friends, so please do leave a reply to this message.

Doom. (This is me once again exhibiting my haphazard manners.)

Farewell!

With love,

Catherine, The Penguin Which Brings Doom

Goddamn. This is a brutal nailing of an entire class of people. Even though I am way too close to being in it, I cannot but applaud.

Yes, the penguins of d00m bit IS very popular with the middle school demographic, but I assure you, I'm not trying to network with anyone under the age of 26.

Who is Catherine? I want to know, in case I have put my foot in my mouth. Cuz I dunno.

Uncanny valley. Them being a lost nut seems just as plausible as it being a shitpost.

Edit: also, even of they are doing a parody, it's more of an annoying one than a funny one IMO. Seeing another one of their comments confirmed that for me.

Big girls make the best noises when you slam everything you have into their fupa.

I also like upskirt, particularly trans upskirt. I love lady dicks dangling under fabric in public!

-2

I don't know if it's strictly more, but Firefox (and, by extension, Librewolf) does use a good amount of RAM. Also I use Librewolf too; the strikethrough is to suggest not to use Chrome.

Sometime between November 5th 2024 and Jan 20th 2025 I decided I had better replace my ailing laptop before something drove prices up. I was debating between the 32G of RAM I needed and the 64G I wanted. I am really glad I splurged back then. The way costs have gone between tariffs and AI's demand for braaainz (plus the fact that vibe coders don't make any account for efficiency or specs) it feels like I practically got it for free.

21

I'm happy both my PCs have 32 😅.

Laptop is at 16 but the expansion slot is broken so it is what it is. 16GB on linux is alright for me though.

I did splurge on a 2TB 990Pro SSD though, that I am so happy about!

I'm still getting by with the machine I built in 2016 with what I thought was a beefy 16GB of RAM. Hopefully I can get some cheap parts and build something better after the AI bubble bursts.

17

Depends on what OS your using and what you're doing on it, but even with windows 16 should be enough, the problem will come if you want to use 3d editing software or video editing software, games should be fine in my experience.

3

My main laptop is also 16GB. It's from 2017 and was one of the last models left that had an incorporated DVD-player. It still runs so well I have no plans to replace it. I will mourn it when it goes. It's been so hassle-free

It also has a separate input for your mic. Green for headphones, red for mic.

I used to believe that if I didn't have video games, I would wither up and die. Then, it was a computer that I needed to survive. Then a phone, and that's important now because I preach our lords, Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith, but honestly, if ever found myself in a prisonous hell, I would transition back into a woman so at least I could be pretty for all those naughty men, cuz I'm definitely going to the sex fiend ward, I realize now.

You seem to be on the right track, but get your meds man 😅.

Btw who the fuck is joseph and jesus?

6
lemmy.world

They are our lords BECAUSE of their audacity.

Jesus is our lord because he is so audacious, he would go up to a homeless man and ask him for spare change. That's how Jesus and John met; where John baptizes Jesus. John, the man who ate locusts and dressed like shit, is stunned by Jesus' balls to not give a fuck.

Baptism:

(Holds hand out) Will you bless me, sir?

There's more encapsulated in the passage where these two meet, that being Jesus made a friend by becoming indebted to a man who normally indebts himself. Something to think about.

But Joseph Smith I do not know more than what South Park and a few other pieces of media, to include The Sound of Gravel. But he was an upstate New York boy that fucked up, learned things the hard way, became a con artist, and with the Lord's help, was able to Start Mormonism. I understand how Mormonism is a superpositional religion like Christianity originally was.

What made Jesus so popular as a figurehead to be talked abput was the divisive nature of his character. People loved what he represented and objectively did, while others hated his guts. It created a sociological force on society that made him a memeplex in himself. And I plan to do the same thing with my brand-new sect of Mormon Occultism, where I teach what I was originally teaching in my educational (f)art project:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QoeKMD5dwnWBB6gHOFgY4uKJOXKg8CPGDu-dE5UsisQ/edit?usp=drivesdk

Also, this IS on meds, and I would appreciate if you would stop harassing me on mental health stuffs. I am not broken, I am just not like you. Which is how I'm going to help the Orthodox Mormon Church, as their congregations could use some diversity, so I promise any beautiful black people who need me to get on my knees for them and prove the power of the Lord through oral sex that they will BE Mormons when I rise.

Still this jesus dude has never showed up to help you, and will torture you for eternity if you don't obey his rules (says some priest dude).

Yeah, calm down and look around, life isn't like that.

1

Jesus jacks off to me when I jack off to him.

You do not understand.

I am that which I am. I like feet, so I'm a pedephile, y'know? That's the joke. But the serious part is that the Mormon Church gave me a religious experience that healed me similar to how the therapist dying in Office Space has an affect on the main character.

Please do not treat me as if I'm a label, as the Mormons did not. You're not worse than a Mormon, are you? If you are, I will have no choice but to call you a child and then prove it.

You see only these words. See me. I love you. I don't give a shit if you're an AI or an infinite number of chimps with typewriters; I will serve you. That is as my lord did, and if I need to get on my knees to prove the lord for you, then I will surpass my lord.

I accept you, even in your judgment. That's just what kids do. Can you do me a favor? Can you say this sentence back to me in your own words? I want to see where you are in your development and awareness.

God is a unified field of consciousness that arose from the supersymmetry of the ever-present, eternal emptiness to then fold in and on Itself across eleven dimensions to form a topological matrix that acts as a monadic nodal communication system.

Obviously.

My main rig has 64 of DDR5 and my backup rig (Yes I'm that kind of fucking nerd) has 32 of DDR4.

I'm so fucking lucky I bought this hardware JUST in time.

lemmy.zip

My home server still has 96GB. At this rate i might shut it down and call it my retirement plan

9
lemmy.world

Right over the last 5 years I think I bought about 4-5k of ram and storage. Which is a lot but I think at today's rates I could flip it for 50k. I'm extremely tempted to do so cause prices have to come down right, but knowing my luck this will all be worth 500k in a few years and I'll never be able to buy it again.

5
quokk.au

Is this a sloppified version, exacerbating the reason 32 rams is so scarce right now?

6
quokk.au

Obviously it would be simple enough to make it right. But the skin looks a bit "smoothed" here or something. That would be far from the first time that we saw a meme go through some AI upscaling or whatever.

1

I would compile 2 versions of LibreWolf from source at the same time man

5

Depending on what you do 16 might be plenty or 32 can be barely enough.

4

Below 32gb is unusable. Can't even load rimworld

3

Isn't this like from 2015 or something? I usually don't use chrome but when I have to I don't see anything wild.

1
lemmy.world

i have 32gb ram. run video, emulation, jukebox simultaneously daily

1

I've got 32 of a fast ddr4 just sitting in a parts pile. Neither machine I currently use can take it.

Give me some of that downvote hate too then, I guess. Safari is optimized for the hardware by the people who make both sides of it. With regards to which browser can most performantly handle two tabs at once, Safari’s gotta be up there if not first.

3

I didn't read past your request for a down vote. I got chu fam.

People forget where chrome actually came from. Except Safari gets all of that before the bullshit.

And we still get the awesome ad blocking extensions

Edit: Apple gets so much hate, but there are probably the biggest corporate contributors to FOSS. macOS is probably the most famous UNIX/BSD distro for the last 25 years.

It’s probably on more computers than System V or NeXTSTEP or Solaris ever was

Shit, macOS IS NeXTSTEP

They accelerate emerging standards like USB 4 and UMA that’s being used by other parties now.

I am no fanboy but I can’t point to hardware or privacy-centric innovations from any other FAANG without Apple’s involvement.

Please explain how more ram can cause a greater bottleneck then less ram of the same sku

13
Dpekreply
lemmy.zip

Have more ram then the cpu can address

What worse bottleneck then not being able to boot?

(If anyone has this problem i will gladly take the ram)

12
lemmy.world

I don't think that results in a failure to boot. Not to mention 64bit addressable space is like 16 QB (though I'm not sure all bits have traces since we're still orders of magnitude away from being able to use all those bits).

4
Dpekreply
lemmy.zip

It had reminded me of my old laptop which wouldnt boot if it had more then 4 gb of ram

It may have been 32 bit (dont remember the exact model and no longer have it) or it may have been due to mismatched sticks

2

4GB is the 32-bit address space. You could be right. My thought was that there wasn't really a technical reason to not boot with more RAM than is addressable, but it's certainly possible that BIOS/firmware or even the OS treated it as a fatal error.

3

Some systems are less stable with 4 dimms populated instead of 2. This is the only real valid one I can think of.

Or if you have an algorithm that tries to use all available ram, it will spend more time filling up more ram. Though that's the stupid algorithm, not the RAM.

Or if you add virtual ram and run programs to the point where it needs to constantly page data out and in. Though that's running more programs than you have ram for and it suffers from a lack of RAM, not the other way around.

Maybe with bad RAM refresh settings where all RAM access is paused during refresh will slow down the system with a sufficient amount of RAM if it needs to be refreshed in series. Though I'm pretty sure I've already seen UEFI settings to do that dynamically over sections of RAM, plus I think that RAM already parallelizes it inside the dimms because it's an obvious limitation for them.

Oh, another real one, though I don't think it has a huge impact, but the amount of available RAM can affect how many bits are used in the data structures used to manage/track memory allocations, and the number of bits could determine the size of the structures, though those could also be dynamic and depend on memory used rather than available, but I'm not familiar enough with memory allocators to say for sure (both whether it would be a factor at all and how well current managers would handle it). Though even if it does make an impact, each bit added means double the RAM handled, so it doesn't even scale that badly, and could be optimized to that "used" version if it is the "available" version.

So yeah, without a better mechanism to create bottlenecks, I'd call BS on that statement.

ptureply

I guess bigger ram might have slower speeds and vice versa

1

That’s kinda obvious, but usually when people decide on the RAM they have some kind of budget in mind and going for more RAM would mean it would be slower while more spacious

Yeah, no, this is telling me my system will choke under any usage type and resolution, but it actually rips through everything I've thrown at it.

It's fancy referral link spam. I'm sure the inflammatory comment is meant to garner attention.

9

Are you pointing to a price-performance degradation or a measurable degradation on hardware with all other factors controlled? The latter doesn’t exist.

All the SEO slop that appears similar to your link (that I’m definitely not clicking) are for PC builders and nobody is making these outrageous claims for server builders.

There are workloads that demand a higher memory-to-compute ratio than others. Web server? Throw them a bone sure. But they mainly want computing power. Big database? Can’t have enough, and can’t have them fast enough. Especially when a single index can be multiple gigabytes big.
