You know, I hadn't thought about it from that angle. I bet they also wouldn't really last long because there's no "you did it" graphics or rewards on screen of any kind.

ATC: “N3407 Heavy, proceed left to enter a holding pattern.”

Pilot: “The runway is directly beneath me to my right, why don’t I just go right?”

ATC: “That’s a great idea, N3407 Heavy. Proceed right to collide with FedEx 005 Heavy.”

Pilot: “…N3407 Heavy, proceeding left to enter holding pattern, over.”

ATC: “You’re a genius.”

as hilarious as this sounds, I can totally see communication cutting and the pilot only getting the first part and missing everything after the callsign

Wild that ATCs still rely on radio that can fail like that

As opposed to what? It's wireless communication; you don't get a choice about whether it can fail or not.

23

well not without some sort of AI-powered tech inside, that's all it's missing. obviously

From what I’ve heard if two people talk at the same time they cancel each other out. Plus, neither side can confirm if the other side heard them. I’d think some sort of text based system where you can acknowledge that you received the direction would be better.

I’ve watched enough airplane accident videos to know that they don’t say over. Also it can result in one side literally not hearing the other side at all

3

How does saying over result in not hearing the other?

Also, you say "roger" to confirm you heard something. If the other side doesn't say roger, you repeat the transmission or say "sayback" to have them confirm what they heard.

And if you missed a transmission or it wasn't clear, you say "say again your last."

3

orrrr, we use a voice based confirmation system. Like having the person repeat the important information back to them using the same radio.

gosh, darn! That won't work. Not enough AI or Blockchain. Silly me. Back to the drawing board...

ATC: “Because it’s full of packages, duh. Someone kick this noob!”

That doesn’t seem like an awful idea, but what about targeting the folks who are like “ah yeah that’s the 4532 from boston” when a plane goes past overhead

There are like 15x the number of people who would want to do the logistics for train systems and would kick ass at it than there are jobs for that career.

Solution: narrow gauge rails -everywhere-.

16

I truly wish all large vehicles were on rails. I saw two pedestrians almost get hit in two separate crosswalks today.

I’m honestly fine with traveling across an entire country taking a week or whatever (aka even without high speed rails).

Wish we could all slow down.

12

The same reason foamers often don't make it on the railroad. They cause safety issues getting distracted by the cool trains, and they become disillusioned seeing the reality of their obsession.

This already happens on the Guard channels, they don’t need gamers just pilots ripping on other pilots is enough.

AAL3243: Tower did the runway lights just go off?

Tower: Blyat!

There's already an online community of amateur ATC that have to learn, mentor, and prove they can do ATC for online flight sims. It's not a bad take. Some of those folks get really good at the ATC speak and are usually trained by retired or current ATC. It's amateur but those peeps are legit and take the tasks very seriously most of the time.

Source: I once looked into doing this but quickly got overwhelmed.

15

To ensure they're at peak performance, they're gonna need provisions to WFH in their underwear. Job needs to provide endless supply of hot pockets, Doritos, mountain dew, and Taco Bell gift certificates. And three daily 15-minute gooning breaks.

I guess red states gets the ones that play Microsoft flight simulator and Blue States gets the ones that play Grand theft Auto

Militaries may be seeking to hire them before long, if things keep going downhill here, which they will.

They already are. Tons of military recruitment propaganda is aimed at gamers. Including an esports team and COD cosmetics, not to mention COD basically serving as military recruitment on its own.

I was under the impression that the FAA fired air controllers. Can't they just rehire them?

6

That would be giving into unions or similar. They have to break the idea of rights so that every plane will remind you what they do to collective bargaining.

That is the story the last time they broke the air traffic controller union, and it set the tone for unions for all the subsequent decades. I'm not sure what they are doing here.

7
lemmy.world

I’m not sure I want an ATC throwing a controller at the radar screen trying to land the plane I'm on.

What could go wrong letting something so important be in the hands of someone with an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex?

2

I don't think anyone is advocating giving MAGAts those jobs just yet. But hey, you never know!
