The Button Has Ended

An experiment has begun.

There’s a button.

That’s it. Just a button… and a timer counting down.

Anyone can press it. Everyone sees what happens. And every press changes things forever.

  • One shared button
  • No undo, no reset
  • A collective test of curiosity, restraint… or chaos

Some of you will hold the line. Some of you won’t last five seconds.

Either way, once it’s over… it’s over.

The Button

So the only question is:

Do you press it?

The Button is open to anyone on any federated platform, be that Lemmy, Piefed, Mastodon... even Stegodon!

Any user from any instance can sign in and press the button, but you only get one chance.

To add another layer to this, users can choose which faction to join, and the "winner" is the faction that holds the button the longest amount of time before it eventually runs out.

Initially a press of the button resets the timer to 15 minutes - this may reduce if the game carries on for a while. At the time of this post, there is about 60 minutes until the button expires. The first button press will be available when there's 15 minutes left, i.e. in 45 minutes, but you can sign up now to be ready!

There is also a permanent record of the first pusher :)

🔴 The Button Has Ended 🔴

Thank you to all that played :)

The Button may be back in the future!

I will wear my "Slowest Reaction" and "Closest To Zero" accolades with pride 🏆

With 13 hours 20 minutes my estimate of 6 hours wasn't that bad. But the reason it failed was not night, but probably people being in the office.

14

Thank you demigodrick, this was a great experience! I do hope for another season of The Button! 😄

I wonder if people got too greedy and waited too long to press, or if we ran out of people

11
lemmy.zip

still lots of people with a press left, but not sure if people just missed it ending!

A good number of people didn't press... and the timer died out....

4

Happened at around 5:30am Eastern DST. so we missed out on most of Canada and the US helping out.

Can we have the button back today? Maybe with a cool down time di people can press it again after 1h or so without creating multiple accounts?

5
lemmy.zip

I have a lot of work to do on it, but do people really want it back so quickly?

I can add a 1 hour cooldown though for a round 2 :)

9

Maybe in a week or two, TheButton Redox, once you've had time to make your tweaks and a bit of word to get round.

13

It would be nice to see it back on April 1St for the Americans to have a go at it. But I understand it you are busy or have a life to attend to.

4

I think one hour is way too early. In that setup four or five people can keep it going forever.

2

Thank you for making this event and to the mods for helping! Having the live chat and seeing every team trying to come up with strategies (plus the friendly banter!) was fun :D

My bet: the buttons dies after less than six hours, because most people on Lemmy are living in European or American timezones.

27

As am i,

Places hand on hilt and adopts a 'ready' stance

But for which team? 🧐

5

Is there a Github for this and/or possibly a framework for the chat, leaderboard, and federated magic-link login?

I've thought about putting together some simple games with Fediverse login but never wanted to deal with the low level boilerplate stuff.

13

No, not yet, but I am actually pulling together something around the login as I've ended up using it in a couple of places with things I'm working on, so will let you know when thats up!

Team Red could really use some help. Let's make this comeback happen!

i saw red last on the leaderboard and decided to help them out but got distracted, my brain went wrong and i signed up for the blue team. to atone for this error i have resolved never to push the button

The blue team expresses its regrets but respects the decision taken by our team member. Sincerely, Calmblue75

you're a fine ambassador for the blues, so i feel less bad that about two minutes after i wrote that i went back to have a look and pushed it by accident. chalk another one up for your guys

This thread has been a joy to read.

- a green

There is a leaderboard on there with a bunch of stats including that one :)

Go on, press it.. you know you want to!

12

It's not asking for your password, it just needs you to tell it your username and server so it can send you a magic link. It's technically logging in, but it needs to know who you are so you can press the button (and use the chat).

This is how this kind of event always works on the Fediverse. It's not putting your account at risk and I don't really see the problem.

13

Shades of Lost, with The Button needing to be pressed every 108 minutes ...

I quoted GLaDOS saying “Don't press that button. You don't know what you're doing.”

… and no one pressed the button. It ended.

I didn't intend for this to happen! Especially when we were so close to overtaking purple... It was pretty funny though

6

It's ok! All good things come to an end, but many more will continue to come our way!

4

I check on Artemis II for 5 goddamn seconds and you people let the Button die.

My worst fears realized: it ended when i was away, between work and home. :(

6

I at least wanted to be there to keep it going if it was about to time-out! As the morning arrived, activity in chat and joins picked up so i wasn't worried about it, but then it died in the hour i was away. I was so bummed because i could have easily kept a closer eye, if necessary. I just didn't think it was.

I had a funny feeling that I should blow my load before I went to bed, and I'm glad I did.

2

Definitely not a bad decision. It's weird because activity picked up as the morning came, so i wasn't worried about it at all.
Then, in the hour i was gone, it died. Bummer.

1

We fought valourously, blue team! 26% of the total hold time! Congrats to the winning purple! And also to the 2nd place team green! Red, you fought great too!

Failing on getting your user account, possibly because the connection gets rejected. Going to set a user agent ("TheButton/1.0") and try again.

Have now set a user agent so you should be good to try again :)

Thanks for a deep check and fix, especially since this was probably due to my own filtering/bot blocking. Working now :)

5

Try now - have tweaked some stuff to see if its a masto authorised fetch thing going on.

6

Imo, it’s kinda lame that this ended before April Fools even began in the US. What’s the point of having an April fools day joke if people can’t even experience it?

3

It's sad that it's dead already. But the world is much larger than the US, it only makes sense to start it at UTC April 1st, in my opinion

8

They didn't ask for your password. You tell your username so that they could send you the link to join.
