Thats actually a great analogy. Its exactly like mixing up all the colors and expecting a rainbow instead of brown goo.

It was always such a confusing disappointment that vibrant colours inevitably devolved into turd brown. Entropy apparently does not spare our feelings.

It's because the lack of expensive blues to make it neutral. Kids can only have shit colors.

Pro tip: also never use black.

If you wont drink the contents of the tray under the beer taps, you just hate beer. Its an infinite mashup of all the best beer ever made.

There are places in the UK that hold competitions organised by the local community/pubs, and this is the forfeit. One got banned. Dont think that the Haxey Hood do it, but its an example of what im on about.

What an odd little game. Very British I suppose.

How is this related to what we’re talking about?

I felt it was tangentially related and therefore interesting. Is that ok or am i breaking a rule?

No rules. I’m legit curious. Maybe I missed it in the article.

If you just started reading at the third comment in this particular thread then this makes perfect sense.

I dunno, the bars I can afford to go to it's an infinite mashup of all the worst beer ever made

Fortunately the trademark expired, so we can in fact call them dumpsters.

Thank you. I make it a very annoying habit to never call these things "AI" and correct others if they do.

Timely anecdote!

Yesterday my son asked me what AI means, and if it meant something is fake. He's young so I didn't go into the LLM distinction, just defined how "artificial" means yes it's fake, and "AI generated" just means they asked a computer to make it.

It reminds me of when everything was "cloud cloud cloud!!!" It's just other people's computers!

17

It actually just means you aren't allowed to know about the servers, so when it turns out your application is running too slowly they can claim your application is poorly optimized and/or you're simply not paying them enough instead of the reality that they have you and 7,000 other people sharing the same kind of chip that controls a toaster.

Are image generators like midjourney also LLMs?

11
lemmy.world

They are diffusion models with a language model to understand prompts. What all of the have in common is that they are generative AI.

Again, they are not AI. We have not come up with an “AI” yet. What they are, are Machine-Learning, or “ML” models. They are not intelligent.

I can't imagine dying on this hill. People have been using the word AI to refer to things that aren't real artificial intelligence for literally decades. It's the phrase people use for when a computer does something that mimics intelligence. How come I never hear you people talk about how video game NPCs don't have AI?

"Actually, that character's programming is a form of virtual intelligence, not artificial intelligence."

~literally nobody in history

13

"virtual intelligence" just reminds me of Mass Effect

Also, a lot of the time NPC behavior isn't even virtual intelligence.

Stupid Goombas walking off a cliff lmao

why should we stop using a term that has been used for at least a decade to refer to things much "dumber" than something like gpt 3.5

6

if people use a word to refer to something for a long time, it means that that something is included in the words definition

4

Because the name is corpo pr speak to make it sound better than it is. We should not be repeating their lies.

4

Guess language evolves, because a simple A* or Dijkstra pathfinder was AI just ten years ago. Machine learning too.

Also, ask people what "intelligent" / intelligence is and you get one definition per person.

Artificial intelligence doesn't need to be good, just artificial, IMO.

4

Is machine learning the problem, though? Like, if someone wrote a program for automating subtitle creation, or at least helping with the tedious aspects of it, and it improved the more you used it, would that be an issue on it's own? I think that's why people differentiate between AI, LLM, and ML, because we need ways to distinguish tech that's being misused/is harmful in it's current forms vs. tech that is inherently evil in concept alone.

It's confusing bc nobody fully understands which terms refers to what, myself included, so everyone uses each term for the wrong thing.

2

No
LLMs stand for Large Language Models
They both are generative AI, but that term also includes, as far as i know, vocaloid software too

If you love AI you probably hate art and expression...

If OOP actually loved art and expression, they'd be supporting actual artists making actual art, rather than putting their weight behind the no-effort jungle juice of art AI produces.

25
feddit.nu

as a fan of mashup culture the first argument is so weird. what makes mashup art interesting is the ability to recognise similarities the constituent parts and the artistry of merging them. ai art is more like a blender. you can make interesting things with the tech but it requires an actual artistic talent as well as careful planning both before and after. pouring in whatever will just net you beige goo.

14

This. I do appreciate a good collage or remix/electronic music with lots of samples. And they're nothing like AI slop

11

If you don't like robots crushing people into paste, you just hate humans.
The paste is a mashup of all the best humans.

12
lemmy.dbzer0.com

There is no "AI". Generated art is generated by computers created and programmed by humans.

Also art is subjective. Both these views are absurdly absolutist. Reality is gray.

6

True but a person calling it art says more about them then the non-existent artist.
