They are completely different colors, however. 🤔

They would be the exact same size if Portugal didn't have that Lisboa sized gap by its western border

There is no one accepted standard for a Lisboa. All Lisboas are beautiful in their own right.

Man, the mercator projection really messes up the perspective, I never would have guessed!!

What are those rectangle territories on the top left?

I'll assume you're joking but funnily enough, there is piece of Spain in France:

I don't get it. The joke is "haha it's actually not a misleading projection"... ?

Mercator's deformation show up when you move countries north/south. Since Portugal only moved slightly East the apparent size basically didn't change. (You can even see and compare real Portugal just left of the red projection)

Right. The reason I don't get the post is that I thought everyone would know and see this ^

I feel like this post is taking a picture of a cube, calling it a cube, then I'm supposed to doubt that it's a cube. Which I wouldn't...

Well not exactly because it's still a misleading projection, because Spain is also incorrectly projected given how far north it is

I meant misleading in a relative sense. In any case, this post makes no sense to me.

Wow I never realized how small it was in comparison until I saw it here.

31

The mercator projection really oversells the size of portugal. If you ordered a large pizza you’ll have to eat it outside of the country.

26

So true, it fits on my phone screen. A large pizza definitely wouldn't fit.

7

I went through like three full thought cycles before realizng this was a shitpost. Good job.

So thats why the Portuguese description on products is always smaller than the Spanish one!

Jamón ^presunto^

TIL: jamón en portugués es «presunto»

I would have read it as: jamón, presunto? supuesto? tal vez? quién sabe.

4

This is surprising to a lot of people because everyone is used to seeing mercator projection maps, which skew the true size of countries

14
sopuli.xyz

Huh, I wonder how it compares to that other country to the west there.

Why does Russia, the largest of the countries, not simply eat the rest?

I mean, they're trying. Not very successfully as of late but they are.

They're so far apart it's almost the cartographical equivalent of licking your elbows.
