Also Hannah Montana Linux is missing

Arch belongs in good for beginners. It has an entire site dedicated to its manual

youre so right. except i feel like the archinstall script makes things way harder for no reason

I agree with list. I set my 98 year old grandma up on Kali as her first ever computer a month ago, and she's already hacked into the Department of Energy.

If they truly wanted violence, they would have put one of the good ones in the S category

Pop!_OS rises above C due to fancy window tiling but falls short of A because it has a stupid exclamation mark and unnecessary underscore in its name?

Okay since this is ragebait and Manjaro is on the top tier fuck you 🥀

What exactly is the problem with Manjaro? I ended up trying it, but my switch to Linux from Windows 11 has been hampered by Battlefield 6 and a few other games. Did I make the wrong choice for Linux distro?

1

Manjaro was my first choice of distro as well. In my opinion it's not technically bad but they do so much stuff under the hood it can have its moments. And anything you want outside of their repos (on AUR) for example makes it so they don't want to support you anymore as they don't support the AUR.

I can't remember why I switched off it now but I ended up on EndeavourOS and have had a much better experience

1

Did everyone misinterpret my post? 💀
I’m a Manjaro user myself and I know this tierlist is sarcastic but Manjaro being S tier implies that it’s actually bad which I disagree with :D

I loved how, as a beginner, Gentoo used to update all of my packages during the day, while I was working, using my 16 cores 100%. That's what I call high-level multitasking.

25

It's also good for the environment, because it will neutralize your swimmers.

lemmy.radio

Apparently Debian ranks lower than the distros that are based on it.

What ranking are you using to arrive at this conclusion?

19

Other than Manjaro in S tier, I think the biggest giveaway for me was Nix, Gentoo, and Kali in "Good for Beginners"

Also: Debian, Arch, and Fedora in F tier? Those are some of the most common ones for serious linux users to settle on...

aussie.zone

I've said it before, but NixOS technically isn't bad for beginners (assuming they'll never operate another Linux distro - but let's be honest, after you learn Nix, why would you?).

Unlike other distros, you can't break Nix. You never need to reinstall. Sure, the advice you find online pertaining to FHS will confuse you, and you'll wonder why the fuck anyone would ever need to set up a "snapshot", but it won't matter.

You'll spend your days showing your friends and family your girthy flake, you'll tell them how you use home manager to create a shell script INSIDE your home.nix module so it's declarative - they wont understand, but happy that at least you're over your catboy phase.

18
feddit.org

you're over your catboy phase

Is there a UwUntu- or Nyarch-like NixOS fork to smoothen or eliminate the transition from catboy?

You can technically use Nix on another distro, does that count?

3

I don't know, I'm asking for a friend

And yes, Nyarch's customizations (like catgirl-downloader) are available as a script, this is probably preferrable than nixifying another distro

2

Putting Pop in B tier has such a chaotic energy, I can't help but respect that. It works on so many levels.

13
lemmy.ca

One nuance, NixOS is only beginner friendly when you use flakes

12

Istg some of these symbols have to be made up, there can’t be that many distros with blue circle + white emblem as logo

10

its awesome that like 99% of tech logos are mainly blue. it totally doesnt drive me insane :3 👍

9
lemmy.world

where can I go to translate these logos to names? I only know so many

Top row is mint, fedora and suse. Don't have time to list the rest, but maybe other people can help out.

sh.itjust.works

A chameleon makes no sense. Suse is S, as a humorous reference to its name, which is like 50% S. Similarly, mint is a minty M and fedora is a literal fedora.

2

Aha! You said chameleon, meaning you know that's correct. Because I said gecko, which is wrong and you corrected me.

Manjaro also has an M, there's different ways to stylize the same letter. And the one in OP's S tier is Slackware

I think you're being facetious though, and I'm biting the onion...

I know that, you knew that, but new users or linux-curious may get this wrong.

4

If someone goes to a meme community for distro suggestions, maybe the Hannah Montana OS is for them.

8
lemmy.world

Anyone have names for all the distros in this list? I only know about half of them.

3

jokes aside, there is never a reason to use MX, its literally just debian🤷‍♀️
