That's not how I'd store a gun…

You know how long it takes to load and cock a gun? The rest of your life.

That's how I store the one I keep in my nightstand overnight for self defense. That's also how I carry it. Not gonna do me much good if it's not ready to fire.

Unlocking and cocking take less than three seconds and add a lot of safety, I see no reason to ever put a gun out of my hand in such a dangerous state

40

At least when carrying it, having it loaded and cocked is normal. The holster keeps the trigger covered, and any not-garbage firearm (read: not Sig P320) is drop safe in case of accidents. And that extra half second to rack the slide can be the difference between getting killed by an attacker or successfully defending yourself in an emergency.

And if they live alone and/or have a safe built into their nightstand I can kinda see their point, though I personally alway leave mine chamber empty

I'm not willing to give the psycho I bought it to protect myself from 3 seconds to cave my skull in with a bat

If you're so concerned with such a scenario, I'd rather suggest you get something to detect intruders earlier so that 3 seconds don't matter.

Also as others have pointed out, you're replacing one risk with another way more likely one. But you do you.

I'm concerned with such a scenario because the guy lives 2 doors down from me. He's threatened me before and I have video of him staring at my bedroom window in the middle of the night, pointing at it, and swinging a bat.

It sounds like OOP installed some sort of dumb 3rd party mod. A well built and maintained gun isn't going to fire unless you pull the trigger. I live alone, my holster covers the trigger and I practice trigger discipline when I'm handling the gun. I'll be fine.

-7

And as such you should put alarms on your doors and windows to have extra time.

So the scenario is that this guy makes it into your house all the way to your bedroom undetected, but for some reason wakes you up before attacking? Seems more likely you're going to wake up getting your head caved in, or just shot if the other random psycho also has a gun.

What do you mean "all the way to my bedroom"? He's on video pointing at my bedroom window and swinging a bat. I'm going to hear the glass break and so is my dog. I also have to potentially cross paths with him every time I go to my car, or the laundry room, or the mailbox. You sure do have some strong opinions on this situation you know nothing about.

I know that you mean it all hypothetical, but it really sounds like you have a psycho neighbour if you list it like that XD

4

It's not hypothetical, I'm describing things that actually happened and are the reason I got a pistol permit.

And that's why so many people die from guns in america. More often than not, your family/friend instead of an actual menace.

27

This is has been true for a long time and is true currently, but the door to door federal nazi raids have only just started

Suicide is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that statement.

Just make sure to cover up your neck when you spout off stupid shit like this.

For fatal gun injuries you're right, but about 50% of all non fatal gun injuries are caused unintentionally. There seems to be about 43k unintentional gun injuries per year(source). In comparison in total there are 47k gun deaths per year.

So yeah not negligible in the slightest, especially in a country without healthcare.

It’s reminiscent of what Kirk was saying when he got Kirked.

What scenario are you so worried about that not needing the time to cock your pistol is going to be the key difference between being dead and being a hero?

1

If I have to pull the thing it's because someone is about to kill me. Just about everyone who carries keeps their gun chambered. That's how experts recommend carrying it. The only people who seem to think it's a problem are the ones who know squat about guns other than what they've seen in movies. Also, it's weird that you think it's heroic to survive an attack.

For more context, it is an incredibly cheap rifle.

16
sh.itjust.works

Not anymore!

It was the Russian standard rifle (that fires AK47 bullets) when their standard SMG was the AK47, right before they realized that the AK47 works just as well as a rifle and just made the AK47 their standard rifle. That didn't stop Stalin from stockpiling enough of em for WW3 tho.

So, when the USSR collapsed, they dumped approximately seven hundred trillion SKSes onto the market and they were selling for less than $100 each. Which made them cheap until Americans realized they were both cheaper and better than a hipoint.

10

Most were cheaply made, and you can still find good examples for around $400-$500, same as a cheap AR.

4
lemmy.world

One time at a range the guy next to me with some custom AR burst fired a few rounds including one through the area cover on accident.

That was scary, so I can’t imagine a full auto mag dump without your finger without even expecting to shoot was.

19

Same thing happened to a guy next to me at a shooting training, AR burst fired after load & make ready. Luckily he was holding it in the right direction, so all the bullets flew downrange. It was still very scary.

This is why the 4 rules are so important. Shit can go wrong, but if you do everything right, nobody will get hurt.

Ahhh, that was a good Mythbusters episode RIP Grant Imahara

14

See RIP, had to go look it up. Didn’t realize he died, at 50, that’s so young. Damn.

hat neighbor is going to be very confused the next time they actually watch Saving Private Ryan and realize there isn't a 10-round wall-shredding scene in the first act. 😂

You reached the end
