It's the other way around, he is putting tariffs on American imports, so it will be harder for us to sell to USA.

40
lemmy.ca

I'm not interested in doing business with America until they can get their shit together.

Honestly, I've been in favor of a full embargo since this whole 'trade-war' bullshit kicked off. Strengthen trade with other nations while showing America they don't control the global economy.

41

Fine, I personally have a near total boycott on American goods and services myself, doesn't change the fact that tariffs are not about us buying stuff from USA.

17

So the good jam and flavored dates will be twice as expensive. Great ....

-1

This is also why all the fucking electronics companies in the EU only going through american distributers and having their own damn webshops from and EU company ship from the US is going to cripple one of or most important industries when shit hits the fan. Looking at you STM, Nordic, and uBlox!

We have 3 large distributers in Europe: UK, Poland, and international (UK and Belgium) and yet only a tiny tiny subset of older parts are sold from there while the american distributors are packed full.

That is precisely what, "his people", are for in his eyes. There is no one but him in his world.

I hope he does it. The people need to feel some pain to motivate us to put a stop to this madness, unfortunately.

Sadly MAGAs are living in a completely separate reality from the rest of the world. Unreachable with facts and figures.

10
slrpnk.net

It's not MAGA who I'm hoping will act. A massive coalition of leftists, run of the mill liberals or even non-maga conservatives needs to form and remove Trump from power.

12

I’m thinking about what is going to happen to the nation if/when trump is ousted. Because you have something like 77 million people who are living in alternative fact land. And you will have to deal with them.

9
slrpnk.net

I don't think that's totally accurate. A lot of those are just not paying attention and annoyed with the economy, so they just punish whoever is in power. That said there are tens of millions who are really that deluded and hateful and I don't know what to do with them. Let me them form their own little autonomous territories maybe, I'm not sure.

2

I think a straight up 2nd American Civil War is the only real way to fix America at this point. The establishment parties are too corrupt to save my people, and there are many terrible people who cannot be rehabilitated by anything less than a bullet.

4

He's already threatening to escalate to a kinetic war and then returns to threaten a trade war which he already started.

Is that supposed to be the master negotiator?

100

It's the same tactic children employ when they throw tantrums in a grocery store. They wager they can make a fuss big enough so that it's just easier for parents to give them what they want and carry on with their day.

15

The idea of a kinetic war with Europeans is horribly unpopular in the US so this is him scrambling.

Repeal the DMCA clone laws in every country.

That's what will actually hit the fuckers bankrolling this guy.

79

Yup. Do that and you can make an alternative App store for Iphones, give a 90% discount, eat Apples lunch, and still make 30 Billion.

22

Bring it. He'll tariff us anyways for being rude to his ambassador or some shit anyway.

Fuck Hoekstra and fuck Trump.

Then an hour later he will forget what he said in a meeting he slept through and change his mind.

The only reason Trump is doing this is to get the USA out of NATO for Putin. The reason he works for Putin is because Putin has some very compromising pictures and videos of Trump, involving children and possibly pee

56

The reason he works for Putin is that he's been laundering money for the Russian mob since the 1980s, and he has learned to do as they tell him while imagining he's making his own decisions.

I don't even see how this benefits Russia. Their military hasn't even been effective in Ukraine. The remaining NATO members have more than enough military to deal with Russia

I get they're removing the largest force, but they don't have the military to capitalize on that. If anything they're going to end up making the rest of Europe stronger.

7

I don’t even see how this benefits Russia.

A destabilized US is still an advantage to some wishing to supplant the falling superpower.

6

having the west and US all infighting from culture wars, and conservative govt, allows russia to freely invade its neighbors more easily without much resistance. its thier foundation of geopolitics.

Okay, do it, because I vehemently stand with Greenland.

This is a position that I’m willing to go through a lot of pain and consequence to support.

Greenland is all of us, and if Greenland falls we all are fucked.

30

Why is it Greenland and not every other country he fucked over that's your redline? Let's face it, no one in the Western world has a redline and all will keep sucking on Donnie's rectum until the end of time. The west is a clown show that has clearly proven its lack of any principles.

You were proud to be American before Trump?

18

I was. You can't conflate what politicians do and what the government does as "this is what the country is all about". There are plenty of reasons to be proud of your country. The reason I am no longer proud is just the sheer amount of stupidity in people these days. It really feels like we are going backwards.

But here's the thing, America isn't the only country going backwards.

1

I don't want to be American. At least, not for THIS America. Hopefully, the Blue States will break off from Dogey America and proceed to curbstomp the fuckers into oblivion.

4

Oh man I've been waiting for us to have an excuse to tariff them. For one thing, we need to get Canadians to stop buying anything from the US, there are too many Canadians that don't seem to learn... At least with tariffs in place, the die-hard MAGA Canadians that insist on buying America will fund our economic development.

Also we get to put the squeeze on the US. I say we start with potash, or maybe hydro. Hit the essentials first.

After all, we should just assume he's going to tariff us no matter what we do. He'll use China as an excuse, he'll use the F35s as leverage, no matter what we do he'll renege on it, the same way he did on his own CUSMA. Just do what we need to do and lie to him, pretend we're doing everything we can, buy time and keep diversifying. Buy the Gripens, negotiate the deal in secret if needed so you don't need to announce it until the last minute. At this point don't commit to anything with the US. Delay, delay, delay.

20

Who would have thought that giving a fascist an inch would make him demand a foot?

16
lemmy.zip

Those countries also have the option of imposing retaliatory tariffs and/or dumping US Treasuries.

14

If one of you mention anything negative about us taking Greenland, I will tax my population more and severely disrupt their ability to purchase goods they need while you will be forced to find new partners. It will be very inconvenient for you. You will probably lose any trust you have in us and might not risk trading with us for a very long time.

Checkmate radical leftists. This is the art of the deal.

Oh... also. Please keep buying bonds and don't you dare trade with China.

12

Shortly, any country without Trump tariffs would be considered with suspicion.

For some reason he really wants the US to become completely isolated from the rest of the world. I don't understand Putin's long game here.

2
FishFacereply
piefed.social

The US has been the guarantor of many nations' security for decades. If they secede from the world, in the insecurity they leave behind, Russia and its friends can hoover up whichever weak states they want.

That is assuming that no-one else (i.e. the EU) steps up and supports those nations which Russia and China have their eyes on.

4

Honestly not much different from WW2. The world was on its own until Pearl harbor.

1

You're forgetting something important that happened in summer of 1941, plus the background level of militarisation among non American countries

2

its RUSSIAN speak, punish [western country] to sow dissent, plus serves also a epsteinfiledistraction that putin might release.

10

Are there any countries left he hasn't levied tariffs against? I believe the penguins are still quaking in their flippers..

8

About fucking time, we need a degree of decentralization from the US. There absolutely was no need to make US the central hub of nearly everything in this first place, all this basically proved that they where the superpower. Now this time long centralized structure is being tested - and hopefully it dissolves.

Let me translate the Trumpspeak to English:

"Whaaaaaa! Whaaaaaaa! WHAAAAAaaaa!"

6
lemmy.world

That sounds less like diplomacy and more like pressure politics. Greenland isn’t a bargaining chip, and using tariffs to force support would probably just strain alliances instead of strengthening them.

6
lemmy.ca

Pressure politics is part of diplomacy.

That being said, the US effectively doesn't have any allies any more. Sure there's still alliances on paper, but Trump doesn't care about agreements and everyone knows it. But we're in a bit of an awkward dance where countries don't want Trump to know that they know the US no longer considers any country an ally. Just buying time to shift everything away from the US.

6

also, mostly just trying to outlast him in the vain hope for a "return to normal" when he croaks.

1

So he is going to reneg on his agreements at this point? At this point he has attacked everyone so he can fuck off. If you agree to him he'll just move the goal post again. He is like any gangster.

6

Most gangsters understand that constant reneging will make the victims start fighting back. They want their rackets to be boring and reliable.

5

Even if you do that, you don't do it like that: You're supposed to bully your weakest trade partners into bullying your opponents so that you don't get dirty, you impatient fuck.

Also, we had this before and it didn't work, both domestically and diplomatically, so this is an empty threat, you're bluffing.

For all those receptive to their ramblings: Why is there only one of 20 military camps build by the US on Greenland occupied if this push is supposed to be about national security?

5

Wonder why people have been screaming 'death to america' for years?

5

Why is news site reporting what the rapist terrorist said? Who gives a flying fuck what threats a felon gives?

Kim Jong Un wants you not to piss in his coffee. You laugh, you don't give it a fucking headline.
