Hitting a moose with a car is really bad for the person(s) in the car. Their bodies are basically at windshield height and become a half-ton missile aimed at the front seat. It's easy to imagine the emotional trauma alone being enough to motivate someone to make a significant life change they've been hesitating over for years.
The near death experience probably helped her realize that life is far to short to be living as a gender they don't identify with.
