Top 12 first thing in the morning, top 6 after 2pm, hot after that; new for subscribed.

Weird - hot practically always shows me stuff <2 hours old.

I've set lemmy to automatically hide read posts, so since it hides those for me, it tends to show whatever it can find.

I set Voyager to auto-hide on read. Top 24hrs has more content than I can read in a day that way.

My problem is rhe slow burners dont make it in, meaning you miss many current events. I now use Top Week because "You didn't hear about ...?!?"

IMO the bad grammar adds to the quality of this meme.

🫡 Salute the people who use new and upvote all the quality stuff so the reast of us can use top day

Imgur users on ‘new’ once ran an experiment for a day where they upvoted basically anything — in practice, oddest and weirdest stuff bubbled up. I've never seen such entertaining feed before or after.

Accidentily shared that to the group chat. Thats going to get taken out of context.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. I appreciate how lemmy is just a simple link aggregator.

I like the idea of scaled; boosting posts from smaller communities seems like it'd be a great way to find the niches I'm into.

The problem I run into is that it goes so far that not being upvoted at all is enough to put a post on the front page. That'd be fine if it was pulling from a variety of sources, but testing it out just now I saw 5 posts in a row from the portugal comm, all with a +1 -0 score. Is it supposed to work like that or am I missing something?

edit: 6 actually lol

The same three people who have alot of followers always end up at the top.

I expect the algorithm is simple. Posts with the most votes are selected. There are more complex algorithms that perform weighting on various metrics, but then the "algorithm" becomes a black box, and accusations of it being manipulated will surface. Votes can be manipulated, but they are public, so they can be scrutinized.

Sure, let me make a web request when the user presses the back button. Can't see anything wrong with making the user wait every time.
