Edge Of Tommorrow

I am not a Tom Cruise fan at all, but on a whim I decided to rewatch this movie. I was pleasantly surprised by the rewatch.

I remembered that the movie started with a bang and was doing great until Cruise and Blunt got to the farm house then it stalled.

That was not my experience this time around. This was a really fun movie. The production values were top notch, the action was spectacular and the movie did a really good job of sticking to its logic. I also really loved the mech suits. I list this as the best use of a mech suit in a movie with District 9 and Avatar as a close second and third.

The book's english title was All you need is kill .

Live Die Repeat was the name the Director wanted to use for the movie.

I don't know why the naming is so... bad

Which is just going to further confuse people who didn't realize they have already watched Edge of Tomorrow and know the whole story, probably.

There is a lot different for the story in the movie version.

The ending is very different for one.

They made a much happier ending in the movie

12

Plus, watching a new movie with basically the same story go over all the plot points and give you a sense of deja vu will really add to the experience.

I remember this movie being advertised at one point under one name before the name switched to Edge of Tomorrow. So anybody that wasn't paying attention could have easily missed the name change.

Live Die Repeat was the tagline on every (maybe not every) poster and it was often the largest text on screen, maybe you're remembering that?

12

It was a very early teaser trailer in theaters. No mention of Edge of Tomorrow, no mention of All You Need is Kill. Just a short trailer showing a setup of an action movie with Tom Cruise with Live Die Repeat. Probabaly a good year out from the theatrical release.

5

Also the end credits has a Take That song that doesn’t even vaguely fit the tone of the movie, because cross-promotion synergy I guess?

I don't like tom cruise either but watching him get his ass kicked every single time he got out of bed was worth the watch

Also noteworthy for being one of Bill Paxton’s final performances.

I remember being surprised by how good this movie was. I expected it to be some completely generic schlockbuster, but it turned out to have an interesting concept, with fewer tropes than it could have had. I remember liking Tom Cruise's character, too. I thought he was going to be some tough guy G. I. Joetagonist, but he was actually kinda funny and relatable.

28

I appreciated that at the height of the Thank you For your Service propaganda in the US, Cruise played a character that was honest about wanting to avoid combat.

7

What made it a better Tom Cruise movie was that he wasn't Tom Cruise right away.

In his movies he is always the best soldier and never makes a mistake, in this he started off unlikable and had to become the best, one mistake at a time.

5

Agree. It bears all the usual blockbuster adornments of what usually turns out to be a good guys win linear snooze fest and yet defies the expectation. I prefer Cruise in atypical roles, e.g. Tropic Thunder.

3

The first half of the movie is good but in the second half it just becomes a generic action movie and it sucks.

1

Blunt said this movie left her in tears and pain from all the suit work.

But

She would be up for a sequel if it worked. Only trick is convincing John to do it.

I hate the man, but like the actor.

Many of his movies are actually really well made, even though it's mostly popcorn movies, but that's fine

He is a huge draw so his movies will all be well funded and produced. One thing Scientologist do very well is make billions.

2

I love Mission Impossible Fallout after watching it in cinema, then it occurred to me that Cruise is a Scientology and I just paid money to give it to them. Since then I just torrent his movies.

2

This is a fantastic film and even my wife who was not a Cruise fan really enjoyed it too. It looks like we're getting very close to a sequel as well.

13

Cruise is fresh out of franchises, so it makes sense.

This movie was definitely one of those 'wtf this has no right being this good' type movies. I actually enjoyed the hell out of it. Now I feel like I need to go watch it again. Thanks for reminding me that it exists!

12

Yeah, I have to admit when I watched it when it was released I didn’t enjoy it that much but on rewatch I have changed my mind.

Don't like Cruise either, but I'm a sucker for any Groundhog Day temporal loop films, so I really enjoyed this one.

If you haven't seen Palm Springs with Andy Samberg, it's really good. Another Groundhog Day kinda movie

I prefer to see this one as a video game, the main character keeps dying and respawning at the beginning of the game, and it could be days between spawn and respawn.
Then about 2/3 through, it goes into Survival Mode.

Like The Outer Wilds (if you take the threat of stopping the loop seriously)? No fighting though, but similar discovery loop leading to a commit and execute run.

3

There's a Chinese series called Reset that has this concept that I really liked too.

1

Oo that is a bridge too far for me. I am going to have to think on that statement.

Not a complete list but here's a selection of movies that have come out since the turn of the century that I feel beat it out in ranking for "best action movie":

Matrix Reloaded

Lord of The Rings trilogy

John Wick 4

Logan

Mad Max: Fury Road

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

House of Flying Daggers

Dredd

Everything Everywhere All At Once

But yeah, I mean it's up there in rarefied air.

6

I'm pretty sure I watched John Wick 4. I would totally disagree with that one. The further they went the more stupid it got, and it drove me crazy. It stopped being entertaining when everything just turned into gun magic (particularly for the good guys) instead of gun fu. The first one is great, is grounded, and it has stakes. Then they lose it, especially when they're walking around with their suit coats that block any bullet and can't be harmed. I'd rather watch Wanted or something if I want gun magic. At least it's willing to have fun with the idea.

5

That's valid, but I prefer to use 0-indexing even though there's no year 0. If somebody asks me about "the 2010s", I'm gonna include 2010 in that, not 2020

6

Ehhhhhhh....

I'm still personally giving that to Dredd (2012).

Its... basically the distilled, platonic ideal of 'a dumb action movie', at least to me.

Extremely simple in general concept, not a complex story at all.

But executed fucking brilliantly.

Don't get me wrong, other movies have better combat, more intricate and realistic choreography, crazier stunts, more mind bending stories.

But Dredd?

The movie is ... literally like the character.

Efficient, decisive, to the point, with exactly the right amount of spectacular violence, world building, action movie 'zinger' type lines, plot and character developement, with near perfect timing/pacing...

...and holy shit that soundtrack.

Oh, you want to convey furious intensity restrained into controlled bursts of maximally efficient destruction?

Cool!

Lets make the entire soundtrack out of angry sawtooth waveforms.

5

If white people movie is all you watch, yeah. Kung Fu Hustle is great too, Ip Man and Raid Redemption is always be my favorite

That is a movie. I like a community with integrity. You're doing good work /c/movies. Keep it up.

Honorable mention to the mech suits in The Matrix when the robots pour into Zion

One thing I did appreciate about the mech suits in the Matrix sequels is how the reload process was illustrated.

That added a high degree of authenticity to how a mech suit would be used in a battle.

1

It is kind of meta funny that you didn't properly remember a movie about resetting timeline fuckery.

4

I recall this being entertaining enough. Not something I gushed to others about how great it is but definately worth watching.

3

The manga is a better story but the monster design in the film was really good

3

Not it's finished, you can buy the whole thing as a single volume too.

This is interesting because I bought the book. I wasn't aware there was a manga. Now I'm wondering if the manga or the book came first.

1

The novel came first, but as far as im aware the manga is a pretty faithful adaptation and was more successful, so I tend to recommend it more.

4

I actually loved the farmhouse part, it made me so angry. The fate of humanity rests on his shoulders, but all of that is just going to have to wait while he tries to get laid. What a piece of shit this guy is.

3

I agree with you man. That is one fucked up cult.

3

It's sad that Hollywood is run like yet another megacorp and only profits count. As long as people watch the movies, they will whitewash said cult.
