Fun fact is that this piece isn't even called bishop in other languages. In french it's called fool. And both are wrong if you compare to the original indian game
Its more runner than walker and the piece goes a lot faster than a peasant for example. Of course the queen and rook can go just as fast, but it is still one of the pieces with the longest range of motion.
Btw, the horse guy is called "Springer" so "jumper". Because it can jump over other pieces.
It's funny, I always suffered from the same mix-up. Now I play more chess with kids so I finally got it. You know how gleefully kids correct adults when they're wrong.
Yeah but the thing is I never heard anyone refer to the horse by anything other than horse. And I just forgor the other name for the bishop and rememberrd the wrong one
Sluggy Freelance had a pretty good and extensive storyline about this, but I guess the comic never really got indexed because my searches are returning nothing.
So I guess you should just read Sluggy Freelance in its entirety, or at least until you find the relevant storyline.
The term "bishop" as applied specifically to the chess piece was first recorded in the 16th century, with the first known written example dating back to the 1560s.

The name bishop came along fairly late in the game.
Wait until they learn how we call their precious precious bishop in French! :^)
I didn’t realize different languages had different meanings for the piece. That’s fascinating.
I like the way Estonia and the ocean have the same name for it.
That's exactly what I was going to say 🤣
Pretty sure it's original name translates to elephant in English, and is still called that in many countries.
Now I'm picturing a deep fried Joker meme with him wearing that silly hat
that’s not even the best one lol
Pointer and pretzel are the only acceptable names moving forward
I didn't know I was an atheist gay race communist.
Nice.

In german it's called a "Läufer" or walker
Ah yes, because it walks, unlike the other pieces...

*Runner
yeah that's the elephant in a lot of eastern countries.
Yeah in chess's Asian cousins the equivalent piece is usually an advisor or general. And then there's Japan, where they just call it "angle-mover".
(Worth noting that it's by far the most blandly named shogi piece. Rooks, for example are "flying chariots".)
In Spanish is called alfil, derived from the Arabic for "elephant".
i don’t remember what this image is can someone clue me in lol /genuine

In my language it's called Runner anyway (Läufer).
We either call it runner (tekač/laufar) or
jumper (skakač)hunter (lovec) don't know which one is the officially accepted name.Edit: the horse is indeed the jumper I messed up.
Interesting. In Germany we call the horse jumper.
We call it horse Edit: I messed up the names.
Pretty sure the jumper is the horse.
Yeah I mixed them up since most people just call the horse a horse.
It's funny, I always suffered from the same mix-up. Now I play more chess with kids so I finally got it. You know how gleefully kids correct adults when they're wrong.
