Thank you for censoring the bad words, I don't know what I would have done otherwise.

Between the word fucking being censored and the lack of capital letters, what is wrong with the Internet?

There was an ancient Greek called Sotades of Maronea, who was by all accounts a magnificent poet and is credited with the invention of the palindrome.

He also had a penchant for writing absolute filth, and wrote a poem about Ptolemy II's marriage (to his own sister) that was so rude that Sotades was sealed into a lead casket and thrown in the sea.

sealed into a lead casket and thrown in the sea.

That's a heavy sentence for some ribald poetry. Mind you, with a line that translates as "You're sticking your prick in an unholy hole", I can understand why Ptolemy II got a bit salty about it.

I remember reading about once documented case where one small time royal in Africa at some point, to avoid capture, cut off the face of a dead man and tried to pass himself off as someone else. Full Hannibal Lecter. We only know about it because it didn't work, and he was immediately captured.

Are you implying we might be missing undocumented cases because they did work?

  • Literally named godborn
  • Land barren when his statue was desecrated.

Hmmm. I think Zeus did something again.

Can anyone point me at a good place to read about ancient beef? I just find it so fascinating when two people's hatred for each other outlives themselves. Doesn't have to be ancient really, I'd settle for anything pre-20th century.
